Best toddler bed guard 2026: our pick of the best bed rails for peaceful nights

A bed rail can provide comfort and security at bedtime to help everyone get some much needed rest. We checked out the best on the market and looked at what to consider when buying a bed guard for your little one.

Transferring from a cot or toddler bed can be an exciting milestone in your child’s life, but as with every new phase it can pose new challenges. With the freedom of an open bed, toddlers can have fun escaping at bedtime and you may spend half your night putting them back to bed after falling out. This is where a toddler bed guard can come in handy as it supports your child as they learn how to sleep in a bigger, open bed.

You can start using one from the age of 18 months. Some children may only need a bed guard for a little while until they get used to their new space, but you can choose between a mesh or wooden guard as well as fixed or portable options, so there’s plenty of options to make sure you get the right one for your family’s needs.

As with all our product roundups, we consulted our Mumsnet forums for recommendations and honest reviews from our users. We then consulted expert advice from the NHS and The Lullaby Trust to help us work out what is important when looking for a toddler bed guard and which products stand out from the rest. Here are the best toddler bed guards to help give you peace of mind at bedtime.

Best toddler bed guard overall

Safetots Extra Wide Bed Guard

What we like
  • Folds down for easy access

  • Extra wide for good coverage

  • Comes with a handy bag for travel

What we don't like
  • Users claim the instructions are confusing

  • Doesn’t fold all the way down

  • Needs to be dismantled

Key specs

Price on writing: £40 | Material: Metal and mesh | Dimensions: H50cm x L140cm | Colours: Available in natural, white or grey

Our verdict

If you’ve got a little escape artist in your house or a child that moves about in bed a lot, you may want a rail that provides more coverage and security to prevent night-time falls. The Safetots Extra Wide Bed Rail is taller and wider than most on our list and is suitable for cot beds, single beds and double beds with a minimum mattress length of 90cm and up to 20cm thick.

It’s available in natural, white and grey and four different sizes too, so you can find the right one for your bed and child. The Safetots Extra Wide Bed Rail folds down to make it easier for your toddler to get in and out of bed or for putting a sleeping child to bed more easily. You can remove the guard to take the bed rail away with you too and it comes with a travel bag, but it does have to be dismantled first.

Made from metal and mesh, it feels secure on the bed and is breathable, although some users do say the material can rip. The instructions are also hard to follow but once set up it should give you plenty of peace of mind that your toddler is tucked up in bed so you can all get a good night’s sleep.

Best toddler bed guard budget buy

What we like
  • Portable for travel

  • Folds down for easy access

  • Good value

What we don't like
  • Not suitable for divan beds

  • Hard metal frame

  • Some users claim it moves about and has to be repositioned

Key specs

Price on writing: £20 | Material: Metal and polyester | Dimensions: H42 X W106cm | Colour: Dark grey and blue

Our verdict

You get a whole lot of functionality for the price of this bed guard from Safety 1st. While it may not have the coverage that the Safetots Extra Wide Bed Rail offers, it has plenty of other great selling points. There’s no assembly so you can easily get it set up for your toddler’s transition to their big bed and it quickly folds down for easy access to the bed. No scrambling over the rail or squeezing through the gap for your little one!

Suitable for slatted and standard beds measuring from 156-190cm in length and 10-24cm thick, it is a great option for taking away with you to the grandparents house or on holiday - it folds down to 76cm so it’s easily portable, the only downside is it doesn’t have a bag so not as easy to transport as the Safetots version.

The material can be easily wiped clean too. The only issue some users found was that it can move around on the bed so has to be repositioned.

3

Best wooden toddler bed guard

What we like
  • Stylish wooden design blends nicely with room decor

  • Made from furniture grade wood

  • Can be detached with no tools

What we don't like
  • Hardwood may be less comfortable for sleeping up against

  • Not suitable for cribs or upper bunks

Key specs

Price on writing: £70 | Material: Wood | Dimensions: H42 x W90cm | Colour: White

Our verdict

Made from solid white furniture grade wood, this bed guard by BabyDan provides security at bedtime while fitting stylishy in with your toddler’s bedroom decor. It feels strong and is suitable for all beds apart from cribs and upper bunks.

We like that it easily clicks in and out of the bed too so installation should be quick and easy and it can be removed quickly to store away when not in use. Although, as it’s made of hardwood, the BabyDan Wooden Bed Guard can’t fold down so it wouldn’t be as easy to take away with you as the likes of the Safety 1st Portable Bed Rail. Still, we like that this manages to be both functional and stylish for families who want a bed guard that blends in with the room’s decor.

4

Best foldable toddler bed guard

What we like
  • Easily folds down for getting in and out of bed

  • Different colours available

  • Good for travel

What we don't like
  • Does require some assembly first

Key specs

Price on writing: £20 | Material: Metal and mesh | Dimensions: H46 x W92cm | Colours: Green, blue and pink

Our verdict

Despite being one of the lowest priced bed guards in our round up, the Cuggl Bed Rail has plenty to offer. We love that it can be bought in three different colours, neutral grey or blue and pink for adding a pop of fun and colour to your toddler’s bedroom. It’s really functional too.

It is suitable for most beds, including divan and slatted bed measuring 150 to 200cm long and mattresses up to 23cm thick - you can also adjust it to fit different mattress widths. The guard is attached to the bed using poles and straps that go under the mattress, making it simple to remove too. The lightweight frame means it’s a great option for travel as well.

The folding mechanism on the Cuggl Bed Guard is done with a push of a button allowing your child to easily climb in and out of their bed, with a safety lock to stop any little hands from playing with it. It does require assembly but we think this is a great toddler bed guard for a very reasonable price.

Best toddler bed guard for travel

What we like
  • Removable cover for easy cleaning

  • Folds down for easy access

  • Handy storage bag for travel

What we don't like
  • Has to be disassembled to fit in the travel bag

Key specs

Price on writing: £30 | Material: Metal, plastic and mesh | Dimensions: H45.5 x W110cm | Colour: Grey and white

Our verdict

With the option to remove the bed rail and a handy storage bag to fit everything in, the Dreambaby Phoenix Bed Guard allows you to provide security for your toddler at bedtime, even when you’re away from home.

It’s suitable for wooden slatted bed frames, or flat beds like divans and fits up to king size mattresses so you shouldn’t have any problems attaching it to the bed wherever you are. The bed guard assembles fairly easily, you simply click the poles together and put the mesh cover on, with safety anchors to hold it down.

You do have to disassemble the bed guard for travel but it has a compact fold and we like that the cover is machine washable. The sides are tall to keep your toddler inside their bed but fold down to offer easy access and to help make bed-making easier.

6

Best toddler bed guard for easy installation

What we like
  • Fuss-free installation

  • Fold-down mechanism

  • Available in other colours

What we don't like
  • Not suitable for all beds

  • Can be tricky to assemble

Key specs

Price on writing: £30 | Material: Metal and mesh | Dimensions: W90 x H46cm | Colour: Grey and blue (pink not currently available)

Our verdict

If you don’t want to be faffing around with tools when it’s time to move your child to a bigger bed, the Lindam Bed Guard has been designed for easy installation and functionality. No screws are needed, you put the parts together and then you can attach it to a range of bed frames, including slatted and ensemble beds.

The bed guard folds down so your child can climb into bed on their own with a lock for added safety. The guard is suitable for use with mattresses with a 76 to 90cm thickness but can’t be used with beds where the mattress sits within a raised frame or upper bunks. There are three colours available, grey, blue and pink, so you can match the room’s decor or add a pop of colour.

Best toddler bed bumper

Milliard Bed Bumper Foam Safety Rail

What we like
  • No hard rail to bump against

  • Easy to climb in and out of bed

  • Provides a soft bumper to help prevent falls

What we don't like
  • Not adjustable

  • Not suitable for use with a toddler bed

Key specs

Price on writing: £30 | Material: Bamboo and foam | Dimensions: ‎L132.08 x H17.78 cm | Colour: White

Our verdict

As an alternative to the wood and mesh rails on our list, the Milliard Bed Bumper Soft Foam Safety Rail resembles a long pillow which sits under the sheets to provide a soft barrier to help prevent your child from falling out of bed. With no hard rail to get in their way, it’s easier for your child to get in and out of bed too.

Bear in mind that safe sleeping guidelines advise against using bumpers in a cot so this is only suitable for children transitioning from a cot to a bigger bed (it’s not suitable to use with a toddler bed). The bumper features a non-slip bottom to prevent it from moving around during the night and we like that the soft bamboo cover is waterproof to protect the foam filling.

You can also remove it and wash it for any night time accidents. As there’s no tools or assembly required, it’s really easy to install - simply pop it under a fitted sheet to keep it in place and hope for a restful night's sleep.

What Mumsnet users say

Inyourwildestdreams · Recommended brand
My DS is also in a cot bed and we use these IKEA bed rails on his. I bought a few different mesh type ones that claimed to fit cot beds and none fitted his. These have been perfect for us.

Our verdict

Stylish, affordable and functional, this bed rail by IKEA would make a great addition to your child’s bedroom. The neutral white fibreboard bed rail isn’t as big as other rails on our list so doesn’t offer quite as much coverage, but it discreetly gives your child more security at bedtime as they transition to a bigger bed.

We like that it can be used on cots with an open side, extendable and standard beds so it can be used for years to come. It doesn’t have arms that go underneath the mattress, it fits to the side of the bed (suitable for bed with a thickness of 18-22mm - if you rotate the brackets, it can fit beds that are 44mm thick), but it is easy to fit and remove. Users say it is sturdy and offers plenty of security despite its smaller size. It is hard though so not the most comfortable to sleep up against but it can be easily wiped clean. This is a bed guard that will compliment any room so you won’t be in a rush to remove this one.

What age can you use a toddler bed guard?

The recommended age for a bed guard is from 18 months. Toddler bed guards help to keep your child secure in their bed when they transition from a cot to an open bed, stopping them from escaping easily or falling out. They are not designed for younger babies under 12 months as safe sleep guidelines advise to keep their bed clear of anything that could pose a suffocation risk.

Some children may not need one at all and may adapt very quickly after maybe one or two difficult nights, however, you can use a bed guard for as long as you and your child need it (up to five years). Bear in mind, manufacturers advise to not use the rail on a bed more than 60cm off the floor.

Do toddler bed guards fit all beds?

Toddler bed guards are suitable for most beds, including toddler beds, single beds, double and bunk beds. This also includes both slatted and divan bed frames. Before buying though, check that the bed guard is compatible with the type and size of bed you will be fitting it to.
For larger beds, you may need an extra wide or long bed guard to ensure your child gets the best protection throughout the night.

Are toddler bed guards safe?

As long as they are used for the recommended age and not for younger babies, bed guards are safe. Make sure to measure your toddler’s bed and mattress height to ensure it is the right fit for your bed. It should not cover the whole length of the bed and your toddler should be able to get in and out. Also, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure it is fitted correctly and securely to the bed.

You may want to stop using the bed guard if your child regularly climbs over them to get out of the bed to prevent any injuries.

What to look for when choosing the best toddler bed guard for your child

  • Size – Measuring your child’s bed and mattress will help you ensure the bed guard properly fits. Most are adjustable to fit different dimensions and some are wider and longer for bigger beds.

  • Material – As your toddler will likely end up sleeping up next to the guard, most are made from materials like fabric and mesh. Make sure the material is breathable. You can also choose from wooden bed guards which tend to be attached to the bed like a rail and there are even inflatable options.

  • Quantity – Where will the bed be positioned in your toddler’s room? This will dictate how many bed guards you need. If the bed is up against a wall, then you’ll only need one for the open side, but if it’s in the middle of the room then you’ll need two for both sides.

  • Bed frame – Bed rails tend to attach to the bed frame or mattress. Check that the bed guard is compatible with your child’s bed. Some may not fit certain types of beds, such as divans or mattresses within a raised frame, so make sure to check this before you buy.

  • Portability – Some rails can be permanently fixed to the bed or you can opt for one that is portable so it can be removed and taken with you when you go away.

  • Safety - Check that the toddler bed guard complies with British Safety Standards: BS7972-2001+A1-2009.

What is the best toddler bed guard?

For extra coverage and peace of mind at bedtime, the Safetots Extra Wide Bed Rail comes recommended by Mumsnet users. It’s wide and long and is suitable for a range of beds. The rails can be bought in three different colours to match your bedroom’s decor and it can be folded down for getting in and out of bed easily. It comes with a handy travel bag too, for those nights when your toddler goes to Granny’s house.
