Best cooling pillows

Poor quality pillows can retain moisture and become warm and sweaty during the night. Whilst flipping to the cool side of the pillow can provide some instant relief, a breathable, moisture-wicking cooling pillow is a far better way to guarantee a good night’s sleep.

Science backs up this instinct to cool your bed down for a better night's sleep. Sleep specialist Dr Chris Winter, who says, "a cooler environment usually lends itself to a better quality of sleep." This is due to temperature's effect on our circadian rhythms - the temperature naturally drops at night, so our bodies relax into sleep more easily if we feel comfortably cool.

There are a huge number of cooling pillows on the market, each claiming to prevent overheating and ensure a good night's sleep - but do they actually work? To bring you a definitive list of the best cooling pillows you can buy right now, we scoured the Mumsnet forums for tried-and-tested recommendations. Every guide we have to help you beat the heat - including everything from summer duvets, cooling blankets, cooling bed sheets and cooling mattresses - starts with research on our forums, as we know how valuable a real life recommendation can be. We then consulted bestseller lists, researching brands and scrutinising customer reviews to make sure we’re bringing you only the very best buys.

We know that not everyone sleeps the same way, so we’ve included options suitable for every kind of sleeper, whether you prefer to sleep on your stomach, back, side or a combination of the three. We’ve also considered the firmness and loft of each pillow as well as how easy they are to look after. There are some big variations in price, but we’ve ensured we have options to suit every budget.

Dp loves his - they also stay quite cold which he likes. I can't stand them (too hard/firm/high) so they sound like they might be perfect for you. They are quite heavy I find if you like to constantly flip yours over.

I've had mine for two years. Every time I change the bedding I unzip it and give the cubes a good mix up. It hasn't flattened. I did find that with all the cubes in, a normal sized pillowcase is a tight fit and I think pushes the cubes together to make it hard, hence me having to remove some and now it's perfect.

Our verdict

Hailed by many as being ‘the best pillow they’ve ever had’, the Simba Hybrid Pillow, whilst costly, is praised for its ability to keep you cool during the night while providing adequate support and cushioning for your neck and shoulders.

This versatile pillow comes full and firm (and is a snug fit in most standard-sized pillowcases). Offering complete flexibility to suit all sleepers, it’s filled with sustainable foam ‘nano cubes’ that can easily be removed to adjust the loft and firmness, making it softer or reducing the height to suit your preference.

The space-inspired ‘Stratos Active’ temperature regulation absorbs heat from your body and stores it, releasing it back to you if you cool down or the temperature drops during the night. The breathable cotton outer layer feels soft and smooth against skin with fibres to dissipate heat, while the open mesh border ensures maximum airflow, preventing overheating and keeping you cool and comfortable all night long.

What we don't like
  • Sponge clean only

Key specs

RRP on writing: £23 | Type: Memory foam | Firmness: Firm | Size: 74 x 48cm | Loft: Unspecified | Hypoallergenic: Yes | Care: Sponge clean only

Our verdict

Cooling pillows can be expensive, so if you’re looking for a more affordable choice, the Slumberdown Memory Cooling Pillow is a popular option retailing at under £20.

Best suited to side sleepers and with firm support and a memory foam wrap, the Slumberdown provides excellent comfort and support around your head and neck, ensuring good spine alignment and helping keep unwelcome aches and pains at bay.

The knitted ‘Cool Max’ cover is cooler to the touch than traditional foam, hypoallergenic and comfortable on the skin. It’s also moisture-wicking, ensuring your generated body heat doesn’t lead to sweat or discomfort, even on warmer nights after you’ve turned your pedestal fan off.

Due to the cover, this pillow is sponge clean only, so you may wish to purchase a pillow protector to keep it fresh and hygienic and expand its life span.

This innovative pillow is made from 65% microfibre and 35% gel, with a cooling pressure-activated gel pad that responds to your movements and prevents overheating during the night.

There’s no need to flip this pillow to find the cool side, the gel pad actively absorbs your generated body heat and provides a cool, calming sensation that can soothe you back to sleep.

4

Best firm cooling pillow

Coolmax® Contour Extra Firm Memory Foam Pillow

What we like
  • Extra firm pillow for enhanced support

  • Three different height options suitable for all sleepers

  • Features Coolmax technology

  • Budget-friendly price

What we don't like
  • A firmer pillow won’t feel soft or luxurious enough for some

Key specs

RRP on writing: £50 | Type: Contour memory foam | Firmness: Extra firm | Size: 64 x 38cm |  Loft: Adjustable |  Hypoallergenic: Yes | Care: Machine washable at 40 degrees

Our verdict

If you’re prone to waking up with neck or back pain, you may need to opt for a firmer pillow to offer extra support and ensure good alignment during the night.

This CoolMax Contour Pillow has an extra supportive, slightly curved design, with three different heights that can be easily adjusted to suit your preferred sleeping position.

With Coolmax™ technology, the luxurious cover works to disperse heat away from your body, wick moisture and keep you cooler during the night. For those used to a very bouncy cushioned pillow, it may take a little while to adjust, but if you’re experiencing discomfort, a more supportive pillow can certainly enhance your overall sleep and wellbeing.

5

Best soft cooling pillow

What we like
  • ActiCool cover to absorb heat

  • Medium support for front or side sleepers

  • One-year guarantee

What we don't like
  • Less supportive for back sleepers

  • Spot clean only

Key specs

RRP on writing: £40 | Type: Microfibre | Firmness: Medium | Size: 70 x 48cm | Loft: 12cm |  Hypoallergenic: Yes | Care: Spot clean only

Our verdict

If you’re a front or side sleeper or tend to move around during the night, you may find firm pillows a little too restrictive and struggle to get comfortable as a result.

This medium support pillow from TheraPur comes with a choice of two sides - allowing you to choose between supportive memory foam that moulds to your movements or luxurious ‘down-like’ microfibre, even alternating between the two depending on your mood or sleeping position.

The hypoallergenic AntiCool cover absorbs your body heat, helping regulate your body temperature and prevent overheating or night sweats during the early hours. It’s a higher price point than some however, and as it’s spot clean only, we recommend getting a cover or protector.

Our verdict

Tried and tested by Mumsnet tester Katy: read her review of the Otty Deluxe Pure pillow.

This is one of those pillows that’s brilliant if you’re the right sort of sleeper – and maddening if you’re not. During testing, Katy (a hot sleeper who normally prefers a very flat pillow) found the Otty Deluxe Pure properly cooling, and that’s the headline. For anyone who overheats at night, it’s a rare memory foam pillow that doesn’t turn into a radiator by 3am.

The trade-off is the feel. This is structured and medium-firm, with basically zero “scrunchability”. Katy rated comfort and support as fine-but-not-life-changing, and said her sleep was “slightly worse” than with her usual flatter pillow – mostly because it’s firm and changes your position a bit. She did say it “moulded to my head nicely”, but it still won’t suit people who toss, turn, fold, punch or generally wrestle their pillow into submission.

So: if you’re a back sleeper (or a side sleeper who likes a firmer, shaped pillow) and you run hot, it’s well worth a look. If you want something adjustable, soft, or pancake-flat, you’ll probably end up annoyed – and wide awake.

7

Best memory foam cooling pillow

Eve Sleep The Memory Foam Pillow

What we like
  • Suitable for side and back sleepers

  • Cooling air holes for ventilation

  • Supportive for good neck and spine alignment

  • Three-year guarantee

What we don't like
  • Less suitable for stomach sleepers

Key specs

RRP on writing: £70 | Type: Memory foam | Firmness: Support | Size: 50 x 75cm | Loft: 13 cm | Hypoallergenic: Unspecified | Care: Cover washable at 40 degrees

Our verdict

With its bright yellow piping matched with a firm and supportive design, the Eve Sleep Memory Foam Pillow is a popular pick for side and back sleepers, offering significant support to keep your neck and spine in a comfortable position overnight.

Unlike some memory foam pillows which can feel a bit stuffy during summer, the Eve pillow features hundreds of tiny air holes, improving air circulation and allowing body heat to escape back into your surroundings. The removable cover is breathable and soft to the touch, with the option to remove it and pop it into the machine when it’s time for a clean or a refresh.

Whilst the Eve Memory Foam Pillow is not as soft or cushioned as plush pillows, it’s still soft and bouncy, regaining its shape easily to prevent those unsightly head hollows when you make your bed in the morning.

Our verdict

If you’re happy with your current pillows, but are looking for a cheap and simple way to prevent sweating or overheating at night, the Chillmax Pillow may be a handy solution to use on top of your pillow or inside of your pillowcase.

Filled with heat-activated gel, the Chillmax responds to your body temperature and absorbs the excess heat, drawing warmth away from your head and face. Whilst it won’t last the whole night, it can certainly help you drift off more comfortably, with cooling benefits lasting for up to three hours at a time.

Its small and portable nature makes it ideal for travel. During heatwaves and warm summer nights, you can pop it in the fridge for some instant cooling effects, whether that’s to sit on, lie on or place across your lap.

Best cooling pillow for temperature regulation

Coolflex Cool Gel Memory Foam Pillow

What we like
  • Noticeably cool against the skin

  • Doesn’t trap heat overnight

  • Keeps its shape without constant plumping

  • Feels solid and well made

  • Supportive for those who prefer a firmer pillow

What we don't like
  • Very firm (not ideal if you prefer medium or soft)

  • No adjustability

Key specs

RRP on writing: £39 | Type: Gel-infused memory foam | Firmness: Firm | Size: Standard (approx. 60 x 40 x 12cm) | Loft: Fixed (not adjustable) | Hypoallergenic: Yes | Care: Removable cover, machine washable at 30°C

Our verdict

Tested by Mumsnet user, Christine: Read our full Coolflex Cool Gel Memory Foam Pillow review

If overheating is your biggest sleep disruptor, this is where the Coolflex impressed most. We tested it with Christine, a self-confessed hot sleeper, and she genuinely noticed the difference. She said she could “feel the coolness” when lifting her head and that it stayed cool around her neck during the night. Crucially, she didn’t feel it trapped heat -something that often lets memory foam down.

It’s a firm, structured pillow that holds its shape extremely well. As a side sleeper who moves around, Christine liked that it didn’t flatten, go lumpy or need constant plumping. The build quality feels solid too, with good stitching and materials, and it looks neat and supportive on the bed.

The catch is comfort. Christine usually prefers a medium feel and found this one too firm over a full night, eventually noticing some neck ache. It’s not adjustable either, so there’s no way to tweak the height or softness - what you buy is what you sleep on.

At £39 on sale, it’s far cheaper than premium cooling memory foam options like Tempur, and for the right sleeper it could be a great buy. If you like a firm, supportive pillow that stays put and runs cool, it delivers. If you prefer more give, it may feel too unyielding.

10

Best cooling pillow for pressure relief

What we like
  • Supportive, balanced medium firmness

  • Has a balanced cooling effect

  • Comfortable straight away

  • Significantly reduced head and neck discomfort for side sleeping

  • High-quality finish with washable removable cover

What we don't like
  • Needs daily reshaping and fluffing

  • Expensive for a pillow that doesn’t fully hold its shape

Key specs

RRP on writing: From £99 | Type: Tempur adaptive foam pillow | Firmness: Medium | Size: 50 x 75 cm | Loft: Medium profile (non-adjustable) | Hypoallergenic: No specific anti-allergy treatment stated | Care: Removable cover machine washable

Our verdict

Tested by retiree, Christine: Read our full Tempur Prima SmartCool Pillow review

Tested by Christine, a retiree and predominantly side sleeper who favours a medium-firm pillow, the Tempur Prima SmartCool Pillow delivered the level of structured support she looks for. “I liked how firm it was, medium, and how my head just sank into it,” she says.

That balance of structure with a little sink is often the sweet spot for side sleepers looking for the ideal pillow. Christine moves position frequently, (6+ times a night), yet still reported that it “significantly reduced discomfort”, scoring both head and neck support an impressive 8 out of 10. Crucially, she “slept on it comfortably straight away”, with no awkward breaking-in period or midnight second-guessing.

Compared to her usual rebound pillows (which she says “never last very long”), the Tempur Prima felt thicker, more substantial and noticeably more comfortable. It didn’t dramatically transform her overall sleep - she reported “no difference” in sleep quality compared to her usual pillow, but in terms of pressure relief and comfort, it was a clear step up.

As for the SmartCool™ technology, Christine, a self-confessed hot sleeper, found the temperature performance steady rather than dramatic. She didn’t report a noticeable cooling boost but equally didn’t experience heat build-up or discomfort. In her words, there was “no difference” in how hot she felt overnight. For those looking for a pillow that maintains a consistent, comfortable temperature rather than delivering an obvious cooling sensation, that may well be enough. The cover does, in fact, feel slightly cool to the touch.

Where it falls slightly short is shape retention. Christine found she had to “reshape the pillow every morning as the filling had moved to the outer edges” and admitted to “constantly adjusting it”.

Build quality, however, is reassuring. She rated the stitching as “excellent”, found the materials good, and appreciated the removable, washable cover for easy care. No chemical smell, no fuss - just open and use.

Best wool cooling pillow

Ava Innes Luxury Wool & Organic Cotton Bed Pillow

Top Tested
What we like
  • Adjustable filling, so you can tweak the height/firmness to suit you

  • Made in the UK with traceable materials

  • Comfortable and supportive

  • Breathable feel

  • Hypoallergenic

What we don't like
  • Noticeable wool smell at first

  • Expensive

  • Will flatten over time, so may need refilling

Key specs

RRP on writing: £85 | Filling: 100% Scottish wool | Cover: Certified organic cotton | Sizes: Standard, EU standard, square, super king | Support levels: Soft, medium, firm | Care: Machine washable with care or dry clean

Our verdict

Tried and loved by Mumsnet Senior Content Editor, Rebecca: read her review of the Ava Innes pillow.

If you want a cooling pillow but you’re not that fussed about “space-age gel technology”, this is a very grown-up alternative. It’s wool-filled (so naturally breathable), and during review Rebecca found it didn’t feel clammy or heat-trappy - more “comfortable and fresh” than “ice pack for your face”.

The big selling point is the adjustability. You can add or remove wool filling depending on whether you like your pillow lofty and supportive or a bit lower and squishier, which is handy if you’re a side/back combo sleeper, or you’re just bored of trying to make one pillow do every job.

A couple of real-world warnings: there’s a definite wool smell when you first open it (it fades, but it’s a Moment), and it’s not cheap. Rebecca also flagged that it will settle over time, so you may need to top it up, rather than expecting it to stay forever-plump with zero effort.

How do cooling pillows work?

Unlike traditional pillows, cooling pillows and cooling travel pillows are made from breathable materials that offer enhanced airflow, allowing generated body heat to flow away rather than being trapped against your head and face.

These temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking fabrics can prevent you from overheating and minimise the impact of night sweats.

What are the different types of cooling pillows?

Moisture-wicking cooling pillows

These cooling pillows offer improved air movement, preventing the stuffy sensation of heat build-up around your face and neck. With breathable fillings and enhanced ventilation, they allow the pillow to remain cool to the touch without needing to flip it over halfway through the night.

Gel-based cooling pillows

Other cooling pillows use innovative technology such as cooling gels or fabrics to create a more immediate cooling sensation. Some gels are heat activated, allowing the pillow to respond to and regulate your body temperature. activating automatically if you start to get warm.

How to choose the best cooling pillow for you

  • Sleep style - Are you a side, stomach or back sleeper? Which pillow is right for you will depend on how you prefer to sleep and whether you tend to stay in one position or alternate between positions during the night. Some pillows are recommended specifically for back sleepers, whilst others can react and respond to your movements, ensuring adequate support all night long.

  • Firmness and loft - Depending on how you sleep, the firmness of your pillow is important too. Side sleepers tend to prefer a firmer pillow which provides additional support for the head and neck and ensures good spinal alignment, whereas those who sleep on their front may prefer a more soft and lower height pillow to prevent neck ache or pain.

  • Type of filling - Most cooling pillows are made from either memory foam or microfibre, with some including gel options too for cooling properties. Memory foam pillows, while supportive, tend to hold temperature more than a microfibre design, but if you struggle with back or neck pain, they may offer the ideal balance between comfort and support.

  • Cost - Whilst there are certainly some affordable cooling pillows to choose from, you may need to pay a premium for gel pillows or those with heat-activated technologies. Whilst it's hard to put a price on a good night’s sleep, you should carefully consider your budget - especially as you may want to buy two pillows to match with your partner.

What is the best pillow material to keep cool?

Natural materials such as wool and down are some of the most cooling pillow fillings, however, more affordable man-made fibres such as latex and microfibre are also very effective. Whilst not traditionally cooling, memory foam has also hugely improved in recent years, with the ability to combine support and ventilation.

Pillow covers made from cotton, bamboo, or cooling gels tend to be the most breathable, allowing good ventilation and preventing heat build-up.

What is the best cooling pillow in the UK?

For its versatility, enhanced comfort for all sleep types and impressive temperature regulation, the Simba Hybrid Pillow is our recommendation for the best cooling pillow you can buy today. If you’re on a more limited budget, the Slumberdown Memory Cool or Silentnight CoolTouch both offer impressive moisture-wicking and cooling properties at a more affordable price point.
