Tempur Prima pillow review: a premium feel with a daily fluff factor

If your pillow goes flat by midnight, you may be overdue an upgrade. Our tester, a self-confessed hot sleeper, tried the Tempur Prima to see whether it’s worth buying, especially if you run hot at night.

What Mumsnet users say

Our verdict

There comes a point in midlife - according to my mother, Christine - when you realise you’ve spent a frankly alarming amount of your life asleep. Or trying to be. And once you hit your fifties and sixties, a bad pillow isn’t just mildly annoying, it’s the difference between waking up refreshed and feeling like you’ve gone ten rounds with a cement mixer.

So when my darling mother retired recently at 60-something, I promptly gave her something to do. She’s been testing the Tempur Prima pillow for me (while my husband’s enjoyed the Tempur Cloud pillow).

As a side sleeper and self-confessed hot sleeper who “prefers a pillow to hold its shape and firmness”, she had a clear brief: does the Tempur Prima truly keep you cool?

Usually she sleeps on Silentnight rebound pillows, though she says “they never last very long”. With that said, the Tempur Prima is more than she’d usually spend on a pillow (RRP £99). This isn’t surprising, given that Tempur’s whole thing is pressure-relieving material that moulds to your shape , with the promise of long-lasting support and quality.

So, does it justify the price tag? In short: sort of. But you should read on for her in-depth feedback.

How we’ve tested the Tempur Prima pillow

I tasked my own dear mother Christine - in her 60s and newly retired - to replace her usual Silentnight rebound pillow with the Tempur Prima and use it as her main pillow for the last two months. She’s a side sleeper who switches position frequently during the night and describes herself as a hot sleeper.

During testing, she was tasked with assessing head and neck support, overall comfort and whether it reduced discomfort, as well as temperature regulation, overnight shape retention and how often she needed to adjust it. She also fed back on build quality, ease of maintenance and whether the price felt fair compared to her usual pillows.

First impressions of the Tempur Prima® SmartCool™ Pillow

Christine describes her preferred pillow feel as medium, and that’s exactly how she found this one. In fact, the firmness was one of the standout positives for her. “I liked how firm it was, medium, and how my head just sank into it,” she says.

That combination of structure with a bit of sink is often the holy grail for side sleepers. Too soft and your neck collapses; too hard and you feel like you’re balancing on a brick. Christine rated overall performance an 8 out of 10 and her sleep comfort also an 8, describing it as “just right”.

Crucially, she “slept on it comfortably straight away”. No awkward breaking-in period. Meaning should you buy one, there’s no wrestling with it at 2am wondering if you’ve made an expensive mistake.

Does the Tempur Prima® offer support for side sleeping?

Christine is mainly a side sleeper and she does move around a lot, switching positions “frequently (6+ times)” a night. Despite that, she said the pillow “significantly reduced discomfort” and scored head and neck support 8 out of 10.

That’s no small thing. She doesn’t have existing neck or back issues, but she is clear she wants shape and firmness that last. Compared to her usual rebound pillows, she found the Tempur Prima “more comfortable and thicker”.

Interestingly, while she reported reduced discomfort, she didn’t feel it transformed her sleep overall, noting she’s experienced “no difference” when asked if it helped her sleep better compared to her usual pillow. It improved comfort, but it didn’t suddenly turn her into someone who sleeps like her rapidly growing six-year-old grandchild on a Sunday morning.

Does the Tempur Prima pillow retain its shape?

Now for the bit that might give some of you pause. Christine was clear that she had to “reshape the pillow every morning as the filling had moved to the outer edges”, she also had to “turn it to remove any creases”. She also said: “I found I had to turn the pillow each day and give it a few thumps to even it out again.”

When asked if it held its shape overnight, she answered “never”. She also admitted to “constantly adjusting it”.

At this price, some people will expect it to just hold its shape (then again, it’s still cheaper than the brand’s Cloud offering). Christine didn’t describe flattening or lumpy spots in dramatic terms, but the fact she needed to redistribute the filling daily is worth noting. She did add she “doesn’t mind giving a few thumps of a morning”, which feels rather pragmatic of her.

Does the Tempur Prima® SmartCool™ Pillow regulate temperature well?

Christine describes herself as a “hot sleeper”. So I was particularly interested in this bit - especially since I’ve had to listen to her moan about anecdotes of sleeping hot as she navigated peri-menopause and menopause over the years.

Surprisingly, on temperature regulation she was fairly neutral. She selected “neutral” for noticing help with temperature control, “neutral” for feeling well ventilated and “disagree” that it trapped heat. When asked if she noticed a difference in how hot she got, she said “no difference”. So no cooling boost, but no overheating either. For some hot sleepers, that will be fine. If you’re buying specifically for cooling tech, though, this may not be a game-changer.

It’s also worth noting her house tends to run on the cooler side since retirement, which may have influenced her experience.

Is the pillow durable? What’s the quality of the Tempur Prima pillow like?

On build quality, Christine rated materials as “good”, stitching durability as “excellent” and initial firmness as “good”. She felt it would “probably not” last long without losing shape, which likely links back to the daily reshaping we’ve addressed above.

Set-up was “very easy” and she could use it straight away. Cleaning and maintenance were also “very easy” thanks to the removable cover that’s washable. She reported “no issues” with dust, smell or skin irritation and didn’t notice any specific hypoallergenic features.

So from a practical point of view, it’s straightforward. No faff. No chemical smell to air out. Just open and sleep.

In terms of maintenance, she shared: “I like the fact you can remove the cover for washing - it saves having to buy a separate pillow protector.”

Is the Tempur Prima SmartCool Pillow worth the price?

Christine rated it “fair value - reasonably priced” when asked and said, “I’ve only ever used ordinary hypoallergenic rebound pillows before. I found this pillow more comfortable and thicker but didn’t notice any difference in keeping me cooler.”

Would she buy it again at full price? “Maybe, depending on future needs.”

That sums it up neatly. It’s clearly a step up from basic supermarket or rebound pillows in terms of comfort and feel. But it’s not a miracle worker, and the daily reshaping might irritate those who expect absolute structure from a premium brand.

If your budget can stretch an extra £30, have a look at the Tempur Cloud SmartCool pillow instead.

The pillow has a medium firmness and aims to cool - though Christine found it maintained her temperature more so than cooled her

Who is the Tempur Prima best for?

Christine thinks it would suit “side sleepers, back sleepers, [and] those preferring soft comfort”. She would recommend it, saying, “I would recommend it as it is a very comfortable pillow. I don’t mind giving a few thumps in the morning.” Then again, for those of us who  suffer from jump-out-of-bed and straight-into-the-morning-routine syndrome with kids (like I do), those extra few minutes spent reshaping our pillow is arguably just wasted time.

If you’re someone who values that medium firmness with a gentle sink and you’re not bothered by a quick morning fluff like my mother, it could work well. If you want a pillow that looks identical at bedtime and breakfast without any intervention, you might want to weigh that up - in fact, take a look at Soak & Sleep’s Soft as Down offering that I recently tried (admittedly, not a cooling pillow, though).

Final verdict: is the Tempur Prima SmartCool Pillow the right cooling pillow for you?

This is a medium-firm pillow with a premium price tag and a solid, supportive feel. It offers reliable comfort, particularly for side sleepers who want a bit of structure without an overly hard surface. If you’re used to basic rebound pillows that lose their shape quickly, this will likely feel like a step up in terms of thickness and overall support.

Cooling isn’t its strongest suit. If you’re actively searching for a pillow to tackle night sweats or overheating, there are options designed more specifically for that. And while it’s comfortable, it does need regular reshaping, which won’t suit everyone.

Where it works well is in everyday comfort. It supports the head and neck nicely and has that slight sink-in quality many people like from Tempur. Christine was happy with it and didn’t mind the morning fluffing.

So is it right for you? If comfort and support matter more than cooling, and you don’t mind a quick morning fluff, it makes sense. If you want something cooler or lower maintenance, there are better options. Check our best pillows or best cooling pillows guides.

🔎 About the tester

Christine is in her early sixties and a very hands-on nanna. Retired but far from idle, she’s the one who mucks in with childcare, offers steady moral support and generally helps keep her daughter sane. She’s a side sleeper and a self-confessed hot sleeper who values practicality over hype. No chronic aches or dramatic sleep woes, just a straightforward preference for a pillow that holds its shape and does what it says on the tin, which makes her exactly the sort of no-nonsense tester you want when judging whether something is worth the money.
