How we tested the Hippychick Pillow

Parent-tester Bethan used the Hippychick pillow over a testing period of six months. During this time she primarily used the pillow as a feeding support for her baby from the age of four weeks to seven months. While she mostly used the Hipppychick as a breastfeeding support pillow, she also tried it out as a bottle feeding support pillow and assessed its use as a pregnancy pillow as well.

She took detailed notes on a number of important factors, including the pillow's versatility, ease of use, look, firmness and overall value for money, providing an overall rating for the pillow.

First impressions of the Hippychick Nursing Pillow

"My first impressions of the pillow were great," explains Bethan. "The pillow seemed really well made and beautifully designed. The colour choices are also lovely and I particularly love the muted colourway I have."

The pillow came in a lovely handy cotton bag which is great for travel and taking the pillow out. The pillow is quite big and designed in a curve-type shape. It’s also quite firm.

How easy is the Hippychick pillow to use?

"It's very easy to use. I've used it as a feeding pillow from newborn which has been great. It has two long fabric ties you can tie around your back to hold it in place for extra support, but I found that I didn't really need this feature as the pillow felt secure enough without it."

The ties can also be used to tie around the buggy if you wanted to take it on a journey with you.

How do you use the Hippychick Nursing Pillow?

Hippychick Nursing Pillow

The pillow is designed in a curve shape which wraps around the users front. The baby lies on top or in-between tummy/pillow and is supported from their back. Although I’ve primarily used the pillow for breast-feeding, I have also used it when giving my baby a bottle and found it a real support for bottle-feeding too.

How do you wash the Hippychick Nursing Pillow?

"It has a machine washable cover which can be washed at 30C. The cover unzips. I have washed it a few times and it’s always washed well with no issues. It comes with a handy card with instructions and other information."

Does the pillow offer good support?

"I really enjoy using this pillow as a feeding support, and it was especially useful in the early weeks of breastfeeding."

I only used a sofa cushion before this pillow and I noticed a big difference straight away in how much less stretched my back and neck felt during and after feeding.

I continue to use the pillow now my baby is older, especially at night and for bedtime feeds. While I didn't use the pillow during pregnancy, I can see how it would provide support as a pregnancy pillow, particularly if placed between the legs or ankles for support."

How does the Hippychick compare to other pillows used?

Hippychick Nursing Pillow

I have also used a bbhugme pillow and I have found the Hippychick to be much firmer and more structured. I think the firmness is good as it takes away the need to adjust it to every feed, and it's ready to use straight away. It's very supportive for baby - I sometimes found him slumping slightly with the bbhugme due to its more mouldable shape.

Does the Hippychick pillow represent good value for money?

At £40, the Hippychick is competitively priced as a pregnancy pillow but a little premium when it comes to nursing pillows. Bethan said that she thought it represented good value for money when considering its versatility, adding "I think the wraparound design and pillow's ease of use makes it worth the investment."

I have now used this pillow for around six months and have really enjoyed using it. I’d say it’s made a very positive difference to feeding and allowed me to feel a little more hands-free to drink that much needed coffee or enjoy a 10 minute scroll during feeds while baby stays in a good position.

How versatile is the Hippychick pillow?

"Although I personally didn't use it for pregnancy, I can see how this pillow underneath a bump during the night could provide good added support for a mum-to-be," said Bethan. "It would also provide added comfort between the legs as well as support for the hips. It can also be used for tummy time support for babies which we have done a few times."

Overall verdict

"I would definitely recommend this pillow to other mums. With my first baby I only used our regular sofa cushions under my arm for feeding support and did the same for the first few weeks of my second baby's life. However, having a bespoke feeding pillow - whether it's for breast or bottle feeding - has been a really great addition to our feeding journey.

Using the pillow especially in the newborn period when feeding for 40 minutes+ sometimes definitely alleviated some neck and back strain for me.

Finally, we asked Bethan to rate the Hippychick Nursing Pillow for the following factors:

Comfort:
Back support:
Practicality:
Value for money:
