Your baby is a precious one off, a complete original (as are we all, of course), so why not choose a unique name to match?

According to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, ‘unique’ means ‘being the only of its kind’. But, let’s face it - it would be near impossible to ensure your child was the only one in the entire world with their name, right?

Instead, how about looking for a name which, statistically, means they’re likely to be the only one in their nursery or school class with that name? Good enough, we reckon. With this in mind, in our list of 115 unique boy names, we’ve only included names ranked outside the top 200 names in the ONS stats for boys, the latest of which were released in May 2024.

What makes a baby name unique?

In the past, there was a relatively small pool of boy names for parents to choose from and, for decades and decades, the most popular name for boys was John. For the best part of a century, it was commonplace to have several little Johns in a school classroom, with many families featuring a John or two in each generation. In fact, official records show that John has been given to more than two million babies born in England and Wales since civil records began in 1837.

These days, with parents choosing from a wider range of baby names, even the most popular baby names for boys and girls are used less frequently than the most well-used names of years gone by.

Let’s look at some of the less popular names to see how often they’re actually used. The cool baby name Ace was given to just 163 babies, while Elvis was given to only 29 babies. With this in mind, it’s pretty unlikely that you’d bump into another little Ace or Elvis at the nearest soft play centre if you picked either of these cute baby names

Then there’s the Beatles-inspired name Ringo, which doesn’t actually feature in official ONS stats, meaning that it was given to fewer than three baby boys in 2022 - we think this fits the bill of a rare name perfectly.

How we chose the top unique boy names

To start our research, we checked the latest baby names list for 2022 (released May 2024) by ONS for names in England and Wales. We also analysed the Central Statistics Office and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency for Irish names and the National Records of Scotland for Scottish names.

In order to select the most unique and unusual baby names for boys, we steered clear of any names in the official top 100 lists and only considered names used much less frequently, ranked well out of the top 200 names.

The first four categories of our list - cute and unique baby boy names, short and unique boy names, cool and unique boy names and unique nature boy names - were taken from existing Mumsnet baby name articles, including our unusual names guide. For these sections, we only included names which were ranked between 201 and 2000 in the official ONS  rankings for England and Wales.

In the fifth section of our list - rare boy names - we used names ranked below 2001. Some names included in this section didn’t even feature in the official ONS rankings, meaning less than three babies were given these names in 2022 in England and Wales.

Of course, we also included some unique baby name suggestions made by Mumsnetters on our Mumsnet Baby Names forum.

Ready? Let’s leap into the world of unique and rare baby names for boys.

What is the most unique name for a boy?

The most unique names for boys are chosen so infrequently, they don’t actually feature in the official ONS rankings.

One name which is totally unranked is Vale. Nature lovers and geography fans alike may like this Old English name meaning ‘valley’. Unusual but easy to say and spell, it’s a unique name which could serve your little one well.

Another unranked name on a nature theme is Bondi, an Australian name meaning ‘waves’. It sounds like the more commonly used Bodhi, which is currently at 140 in the official stats for boys. Bondi would suit any little surf dude, given that it name drops Australia’s most famous golden beach in Sydney.

As Vale or Bondi are both unranked in the official ONS stats, it means that they were each given to fewer than three baby boys in England and Wales in 2022. This makes them amongst the most unique names for boys that you could choose for your baby.
