Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow. Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to break transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others.

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive.

Checking in from NYC.

I've mentioned several times now that at my state level, the reaction of governors and mayors is pretty good. They're not in denial, they're doing all they can here in NY - really expanded testing and tracking people down for quarantining. We have over 4000 people in quarantine here in the city, most of those are a precaution as they have no symptoms. Connected schools are closing.

Hope that reassures some people across the pond that the USA is fighting back, and hopefully it WILL slow transmission down. It reassures me somewhat, anyway.

Each country and each individual needs to be doing what we can to slow this down.

Bewildering why some people persist in basically ignoring it and hoping it goes away - but they are definitely the weak link in getting this under some semblance of control.

AbsentmindedWoman · 06/03/2020 21:08

Also, I think both Seattle and San Francisco are urging those who can to work from home.

All cities need to follow suit now.

usernameishistory · 06/03/2020 21:10

Thank you, that definitely challenges the image that I've gleaned from Trump.

Good to hear updates from around the world.

so state level is basically ignoring POTUS makes sense

middleager · 06/03/2020 21:12

Thanks for the new thread and helpful info.

My work in denial. Everyone saying "it's just the flu"
No daily homeworking suggested (even though we can and do wfh once a week already)

Everyone touching doors, photocopiers, kettles without even thinking. Low on soap in loos...
Air con going round all day
Angry

Babyfairy0923 · 06/03/2020 21:14

My sister works in a care home, they today have said that no visitors will be allowed in nor residents allowed out, only the 50 odd staff can come and go? I guess it slows the risk to some extent.

AbsentmindedWoman · 06/03/2020 21:25

so state level is basically ignoring POTUS makes sense

They basically got the ball rolling on tackling it.

Trump signed for an $8 billion emergency injection for dealing with coronavirus this morning, however.

middleager · 06/03/2020 21:25

I feel for residents, family and workers Baby
Sometimes it's easy to get wrapped up in our own bubbles.

brainfogg · 06/03/2020 21:26

Where has this belief that it’s just the flu come from? It’s really odd, you don’t have to look too far to see confirmation that it really isn’t.
I’ve had to tell two people on my Instagram today that it’s not flu or a cold and the one of them just kept telling me I’m wrong and the facts speak for themselves!! I’ve given up.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/03/2020 21:27

I work in a university and have been reading about how badly they’re going to be affected by this for the next year or two as foreign students won’t come. We have a lot of Chinese students and their exams are being delayed, not being able to take their IELTS exam, etc so won’t be able to come to uni.

I’m now worried about my job.

Rockylove · 06/03/2020 21:33

My boyfriend is currently on a lads weekend away travelling Spain and mid Italy. A little worried i must admit. Told him i don't want to see him for a week when he gets back just in case. Would be longer if i had my way but we have a prior engagement already booked together.

middleager · 06/03/2020 21:37

brain
I find it baffling and dangerous that people are so dismissive or worse - in denial.
Boris and Matt collude with this with jokes about loo roll and handshaking.

Even if they could get a lid on this can't people concede what might happen, look at the trajectory, and admit some basic prep or "what ifs" (could I work from home? Could we take a mortgage break? Should we get a few extra bits in?)

Just basic planning. I find it bizarre. Yet anyone suggesting this is catastrophizing.

Hmm
AbsentmindedWoman · 06/03/2020 21:37

From the NYC governor's Twitter:

There are 44 New Yorkers under mandatory quarantine.

Mandatory quarantine applies to those who:

-Have tested positive for #Coronavirus
-Have had direct contact (within 6 ft) with person who tested positive
Returned from country with level 2 or 3 travel notice & has symptoms

Then we have precautionary:

There are currently ~4,000 NYers under precautionary quarantine right now.

Precautionary quarantine applies to those who:

-Returned from a country of concern but are NOT symptomatic
-Had proximate (not direct) exposure to a positive case
-Others recommended by health officials

I don't know how they are chasing down those who are in the precautionary category, or how they are supervising it, but it's something!

Teaandalemontart · 06/03/2020 21:44

DS is telling me there's a confirmed case as his uni, as of this afternoon, but nothing on the news yet. I hope it's just the rumour mill and not true.

brainfogg · 06/03/2020 21:49

@middleager I am livid at those two buffoons either going around making jokes about it and acting as though it’s no big deal or outright lying, the handshaking display was just weird and so irresponsible.

It might have even been on one of these threads earlier someone said a great analogy which was: I don’t wait until I’m actually on my period before buying sanitary towels. Surely this applies here, you’re absolutely right that it makes sense to at least consider for a minute the effect this might have on your travel plans or your housing or your kids schooling! I find it all so odd Shock

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 06/03/2020 21:52

@brainfogg I presume the flu comments are because we are repeatedly told it has flu-like symptoms and for the majority of people it will just feel like a cold or mild flu. People just read that so assume it is flu. Hence why so many comparisons are being made and people are a bit blaise about it

AvocadoOwl · 06/03/2020 21:54

That sounds positive re NY @AbsentmindedWoman.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 06/03/2020 22:03

I’m really concerned how little the government seem to be doing about this. Greece has a lot less cases but have been closing schools: whereas here it looks like nothing will be done to stop the spread except a few posters telling you to wash your hands (which people should already be doing FFS)

CrowleysBentley · 06/03/2020 22:05

Could someone please send me the link for the hand sanitiser? I'm chronically ill, DD works as a waitress and both DD and DS get trains to work, and we've almost run out. There's none to be found anywhere in our area.

brainfogg · 06/03/2020 22:07

@AHippoNamedBooBooButt yes true, it’s the symptoms description probably as well.

frumpety · 06/03/2020 22:08

The thing with the 'Flu', is that it is subjective to a certain extent. I think I have had influenza once in my life, I don't remember 24 hrs of the time I had it, I was quite happy to lie in bed and not care if I wet the bed or not, I couldn't have summoned up the energy to post online or lift my head off the pillow. So Flu , so bad you piss yourself and don't notice/care or Flu, went to the shops to stock up/pick the kids up from school, went to work ? Could be the same virus and one person is effected more than another ? Have both people had blood tests to confirm the presence of the influenza virus ? Or did one person have influenza and the other a common or garden bad cold ?
