I'm posting from the Womadelaide music festival. There has been some messaging about hygiene but otherwise all as normal here.
Sadly about to cancel a longed for trip to New York. Travel insurance won't cover any coronavirus costs in US.

Horehound · 07/03/2020 04:34

Well, did you just read my post? WHO basically says no point not moving around...

tud41 · 07/03/2020 04:37

@auslass i wouldn't go.... however its purely because i have a Bristol city season tickets and we are awful right now haha.

of course you should still go

auslass · 07/03/2020 04:45

@tud41 was trying to get out if going. Now you've gone and ruined it. 😋

Etinox · 07/03/2020 05:11

@auslass
I wouldn’t go. Purely as you don’t want to! Grin
However I’m surprised at everyone else saying not to cancel- was the case at your dhs work confirmed?
If so, going to a big sporting event after he’s been in close contact with someone seems reckless.

auslass · 07/03/2020 05:13

@Etinox yeah it was a confirmed case but on a different floor. I'm reaching deep for reasons not to be in Bristol. No offence to Bristol, but I go there way too much and I'm pregnant, so I can't drink to cope. Lol.

Etinox · 07/03/2020 05:17

Pregnant, winter weekend on someone else’s timetable and agenda. You don’t need an excuse!

auslass · 07/03/2020 05:19

@Etinox I might start coughing just to be on the safe side.

nellodee · 07/03/2020 05:43

Do WHO say travel restrictions don’t work, or travel bans? The two are not synonymous. In addition, what are they basing this upon? We haven’t had any comparable pandemics in a century. The WHO are not without their own political agenda. They seem very keen to ensure their message is palatable to their biggest funders.

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 07/03/2020 05:55

I actually overheard an older lady tell her friend “I’ll be okay, I’ve had my flu jab”

TokyoSushi · 07/03/2020 06:14

Morning all, Crufts today, I'll let you know how it was later!

I'll still be looking for the 2pm update - I assume they do it at weekends?

GenevaMaybe · 07/03/2020 06:18

Here in Switzerland they have asked over 65s to stay at home, and if they do need to go out, to avoid public transport, supermarkets and large gatherings like cinema or theatre.

Skittlesss · 07/03/2020 06:22

I think Donald Trump is playing a game. He’s being daft to divert attention onto him as opposed to what he’s telling people to do re coronavirus.

Wehttam · 07/03/2020 06:43

Trump is playing the ‘just the flu’ card because he knows it can resonate with others that feel the same way. Remember, he is the President of USA, it would be naive to think he hasn’t been told the grim potential this has, only that conversation will be away from his media circus whenever he has a meeting.

In some sense he is a distraction for those who are not panicking yet so that they stay that way for the next few weeks or however long before it gets too noticeable to deny what is actually going on. He will be understandably furious at the massive hit the markets have taken, this is a massive loss of face to his base. His re-election chances in November could be impacted by his actions on this crisis with the added blow of news outlets shifting focus from him and his ‘achievements’ green markets, low unemployment etc to the possibility of an economic Armageddon right before the ballots open.

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2020 06:47

I think both Seattle and San Francisco are urging those who can to work from home.

It makes me tense when I think about what our UK government are not saying. They are quiet on all other guidance except for hand washing.

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2020 06:49

StartupRepair did you get your money back? Is that a blanket thing or your insurance do you think?

RedToothBrush · 07/03/2020 07:05

I think both Seattle and San Francisco are urging those who can to work from home.

It makes me tense when I think about what our UK government are not saying. They are quiet on all other guidance except for hand washing.

Tbf San Francisco and Seattle are tech cities so are domininated by companies and employees already set up to work from home. That's not true of the UK in anywhere near the same scale. Its actually a low impact piece of advice for San Francisco and Seattle so very doable without side effects or loss of income.

It's not something other us cities could do.

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2020 07:06

Yes tech are leading with it.

WhoWants2Know · 07/03/2020 07:07

In the BBC report this morning on the 80 year old gentleman who died of/with the virus, they mentioned that 30 of the current 163 cases were from community transmission. That's a pretty good indication that there's plenty of it already around.

Newjez · 07/03/2020 07:10

I'm guessing that if the USA really kicks off, and summer doesn't calm it down, then the USA presidential election will be postponed? Is there precident for this?

Wehttam · 07/03/2020 07:14

If he didn’t win his twitter account would be the most overused one in history with him claiming corona colluded against him every. damn. minute.

Nicepud · 07/03/2020 07:14

Well I wasn't reassured by the gp who prescribed me my rescue course if steroids yesterday.

She thought the panic was hilarious, and boasted that she'd had everyone and his dog in this week worried about a 'just' a temp and a cough. And CV is just like a cold.

She even mocked the fact I was coughing into a tissue as it was an asthma cough and so not infectious. I said I'm pretty sure people still don't want me coughing in their face. Shock

She did lament that her surgery couldn't ger hold if anymore handgel though.

Not sure what hope we've got of containment when even a Gp thinks it's just like a cold blown all out of proportion.

Do people think we have a special immune system in the UK? That bad things can only happen to other countries?

Wehttam · 07/03/2020 07:16

Nicepud the sad irony to her belief is that she could get it herself very soon.

summerdown · 07/03/2020 07:19

There will be an effect if all the tech employees wfh. There will be plenty of sandwich and coffee shops and dry cleaners etc that rely on the huge number of workers in San Francisco and Seattle.

I think many tech workers in London / Uk will also be encouraged to wfh too. As pp said they can do so with minimum disruption to business

Nicepud · 07/03/2020 07:21

Wehttam I did think that. There was a man standing outside the doors as I left reading the CV sign that was up there.

I held the door ooen for him but he said 'better not'. The receptionist came out to talk to him as I was walking away. Hope he is alright, he looked very unwell.

Hopefully they took him seriously.
