Why on earth are people still getting on cruise ships 🤦‍♀️

manicinsomniac · 07/03/2020 21:52

That new cases per 1 million of population column on the WHO website seems to suggest we are doing very well compared to other European countries. I thought we had so many fewer cases than Spain, France and Germany because I thought their populations must be huge compared to ours. But it seems not.

PotholeParadise · 07/03/2020 21:54

PM has visited a lab in Bedfordshire where British scientists are using expertise and experience from previous epidemics to create a quicker and cheaper way to diagnose coronavirus

Sounds unhelpful to their work.
Could he not just hide in a fridge, out of the way?

manicinsomniac · 07/03/2020 21:54

Oh, and we've picked up 3 more cases it seems - from Scotland, Wales or N.I, I assume.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 21:55

"Why anyone would now willingly get on board a floating virus factory is beyond me."

Exactly 🤯

imo, time for many governments to just ban them from docking
This would force the cruise companies to stop

They cause so much upheaval in whatever country they end up in with a possible boatload of infected people

No information was required when I flew in to uk three weeks ago. Ironically, before I left China I had to fill out a form regarding where I had been in the previous two weeks.
We still have to fill out information on a weekly basis for the Chinese authorities regarding movement, current location and health. This is collected by dd’s school and dh’s company.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 21:59

manic The progress of transmission would be delayed in an island compared to countries on the continent,
with so many more ways of ingress from all directions

The question is whether UK island status will be significant protection, or just a few weeks delay before we copy the pattern of other countries of similar size.
imo, it could be a significant help

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 22:00

Shanghai 21.38

How can oz ensure those asked to self isolate would be though?

Why have we been so very lax?

Did someone ask for pneumonia rates earlier? Compared to last year.

Did anyone respond?

What markers can we look at... Is there anything that an give us a true idea of what's going on out there.

We have instance of MK man.

Hugglespuffed · 07/03/2020 22:00

I posted the same the other day but will post again. Friend travelled around Thailand, japan etc.... for over 2 months. Flew back this week to London. London asked nothing at all. No temps taken. She said she couldn't believe how relaxed they were.

woodencoffeetable · 07/03/2020 22:01

tbh I wonder how germany checks travel via train.
I have relatives who are visiting italy right now. they are in the south now but plan to make their way to northern germany by train, visiting various cities on stopovers on the way there...

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 22:02

Huggles is wish people like that contacted the papers!

UnholyStramash · 07/03/2020 22:04

@GPwife2411, I was surprised today to read the U.K. government saying England was still in containment phase as I though some of the new diagnoses yesterday were said to be untraceable. By that I mean contact tracing isn’t possible for some of these individuals so they’ve caught the virus ‘in the community’. I’m in Scotland where we are still in containment - but the FM has said we’re to expect to move to the next phase soon - the delay phase. It’s interesting that your DH reckons the virus is no longer contained in England.

Fourducksate · 07/03/2020 22:04

Why on earth are people still getting on cruise ships?

Because ‘it’s only the flu’!

I follow a couple of cruise forums and people are still saying that they’re pretty safe!

We cruise a lot, we have one booked for August, but I don’t intend going.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 22:04

As the progress of the disease in the UK is some weeks behind Germany,
maybe similar checks at airports and ports will be brought in at some point.

Germany does rather like asking people to fill in forms with long complicated names, so it probably came more naturally Wink

cologne4711 · 07/03/2020 22:05

Those with elderly relatives please BEG them to stay safe, to keep away from crowds, busy environments, planes, anything with people, for a good while, until this first wave passes and we have a hold on the situation

Perhaps they can be left to make their own decisions. A friend of my mother's who is 97 nearly 98, said she'll carry on going out and if she gets it she gets it. She'd rather die now than end up in a home.

cologne4711 · 07/03/2020 22:05

Germany hasn't closed schools yet has it (I mean in general, as opposed to where cases have been found).

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 22:06

Big choc I'm flummoxed as to why we have to wait to do anything.

ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 22:07

Several of my friends returned to Australia and there were no checks re self isolation so I assume it was on a trust basis. They were given guidelines at the airport re wearing masks at home and going into the garden and wearing a mask was also acceptable.
Re flights from China. only Australian citizens and permanent residents were allowed to enter Australia after 1st Feb so people self isolating should have been at home and checks would have been possible.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2020 22:09

"I wonder how Germany checks travel via train."

Probably sets up exit barriers on the platform, before people can get into the rest of the station.

In this emergency, as is allowed for public health reasons,
I gather Schengen has in effect been suspended, so countries can make checks at their borders if they deem it necessary.

ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 22:09

Waiting seems pointless and collecting data at the airport would surely make it easier to trace contacts.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 22:10

Cologne, I don't blame her.
At that stage in life I wouldn't want to be cowering in a room waiting!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/03/2020 22:10

We still have to fill out information on a weekly basis for the Chinese authorities regarding movement, current location and health. This is collected by dd’s school and dh’s company.

I thought you were in the UK? Does your DD go to school in China?

BeardedMum · 07/03/2020 22:11

Amongst the advise on how to prevent the virus from spreading is not touching your face.

Now I am conscious about it I just never realised how much I touched my face. Like ALL the timeShockConfused

ShanghaiDiva · 07/03/2020 22:12

When we had avian flu in China, my mum was staying with me. The airport authorities phoned me to check she was okay as a person seated near her on the plane had fallen ill so collecting entry data is useful.
