Op can you link the petition to the close schools... I'm enjoying everyone's updates here from various perspectives.
@sansasnark

I find your posts very balanced and reasonable and reassuring.

It's bizarre, the US response. You'd think Trump would want to be seen as doing everything possible. Won't it harm his chances of re-election? Or are things similar to here. An opposition so unpopular the incumbent doesn't have to try very hard? How much responsibility do individual states have for things like testing criteria? It doesn't make sense to me. Not cancelling his rallies suggests no self protection instinct. I don't understand it. At least he's not doing a Boris - telling the public to continue as normal whilst planning to close down parliament early to protect himself!

The latest Australian case, a doctor from Toorak, Victoria, returned from a trip to the US with relevant symptoms and nevertheless returned to work at his clinic, seeing about 70 patients over 5 days before being diagnosed with CV-19 (per Guardian live feed).

So my friend has flu like symptoms, she says that every hair on her skin hurts, she’s so tired she can’t keep her eyes open. Her dd went to Italy in half term, but not the affected regions. I’ve suggested she call 111, but it’s falling on deaf ears. It’s just a cold apparently and she will try and get a GP appointment. How many others are like this? God help us when all the aging GPs go off sick for a month.

I just watched the link to the survivor. It sounds exactly like the pneumonia and pleurisy I’ve just recovered from. Let me tell you folks, if you think that is just like having a bout of man flu or whatever you are in for a very big shock.

I thought BJ was bad but DT... words fail me.

Mayor of San Jose proposes moratorium on evictions for residents short on rent due to lost income due to the Coronavirus.

HeIenaDove · 07/03/2020 02:38

Forced isolation legislation equates to being off sick ....link?

Travelling/making other decisions around exposure, read up, no-one can decide for you, but be aware...some considerations....

Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.

You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)

Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.

What happens with your dc and school upon return.

Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

My add ons.

Clarity from electricity companies for those on key meters (put the feelers out around this today and the consensus was "i aint sitting indoors with no electric unable to wash or cook while perishable food goes off" )

Housing associations. Clarification on whether they would evict if someone was short on income due to Coronavirus and/or self isolation.

Food especially for elderly people who arent suddenly going to buy a smartphone and start shopping online.

SAN JOSE
San Jose Mayor Calls for Action to Protect Renters Amid Coronavirus

Four new cases of coronavirus were reported in Santa Clara County Friday, bringing the total to 24 and prompting the mayor to call for action to protect renters.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo introduced an ordinance that would prohibit evictions of tenants, if that tenant can’t pay the rent because he or she is not working or under employed due to coronavirus.

He said the Valley’s Association of Landlords is on board with the plan and there may be some help for smaller landlords who themselves can’t afford to lose a month’s rent

The moratorium lasts for 30 days but can be extended.

“There are tough times that we are going to have to endure in the weeks ahead and the months ahead, and we’re going to get through this,” Liccardo said. “But were going to get through this together.”

The mayor, like the public health department, is recommending that all public events be cancelled.

All functions at the fairgrounds are cancelled as well as a teacher’s conference scheduled for Saturday in San Jose.

However, a big Native American Heritage Festival scheduled for next week in San Jose is still on while organizers monitor the situation

HeIenaDove · 07/03/2020 02:54

Now THATS being in it together!!

AbsentmindedWoman · 07/03/2020 03:12

Yes and California has done the same as New York and made testing free, which also helps.

tud41 · 07/03/2020 03:45

@AHippoNamedBooBooButt That is also the way i see it. People say its basically flu because for most of them if they get it, it will be! we all know the damage it can do to elderly people or people with underlying health conditions, nobody is denying that.
However for the vast majority it is widely reported that it will feel like a mild case of the flu or a bad cold. I do not think these people will be talking about the rate of infections or how long it can last on surfaces etc they will be talking about the symptoms for the vast majority of people!

I think its pretty obvious now there are probably hundreds of thousands of cases around the world which is why they are predicting the death rate to be lower than 1% even if the official one currently is 3.4% which would suggest that yes this is probably 6 or 7 times worse than the flu...

I honestly believe its going to be a case of riding it out for the year expecting 5,6,7,8x as many deaths as flu etc and hope the vaccine is out early next year. at this stage can we really do any more than that?

tud41 · 07/03/2020 04:04

@tryingtoprep i guess what he is hoping is that it all fizzles out in the summer and then he looks like the leader that didn't over react and kept calm in the face of disaster etc. I am very on the fence with it all in the sense that i am not worried about it but no harm in doing a big shop etc i am always expecting the best but being prepared for the worst. Talking to people i still think the majority of people are laughing this off etc rightly or wrongly and trump just happens to be one of those people. The only difference is he has a bigger stage to put his ideas across than most people.

At the end of the day nobody currently knows how this is going to play out as much as experts can have their opinion. it is like the weather you can predict so far into the future but the further you predict the more you are basically guessing, as one small change in circumstances could change everything.

tud41 · 07/03/2020 04:12

I just watched the link to the survivor. It sounds exactly like the pneumonia and pleurisy I’ve just recovered from. Let me tell you folks, if you think that is just like having a bout of man flu or whatever you are in for a very big shock.

There are also reports from people who say it was not that bad, also many people with no symptoms. It would be stupid to take the story of one person [ lets be honest that is going to be the story the media publish as nobody will click on a story with the heading " felt like i had a bit of a soar throat" are they!] and just assume it will be like that for everybody.. there have been over 100,000 reported cases [not counting probably hundreds of thousand unreported cases] and i can guarantee not all of them have had pneumonia. Also are we really calling them survivors? that just seems stupid and dramatic!

P.S sorry for blocking up the thread im up for work early today and haven't checked in for a while!

Horehound · 07/03/2020 04:13

Who States that it's not effective minimising travel

"In general, evidence shows that restricting the movement of people and goods during public health emergencies is ineffective in most situations and may divert resources from other interventions"
"Travel bans to affected areas or denial of entry to passengers coming from affected areas are usually not effective in preventing the importation of cases but may have a significant economic and social impact"

That's for whoever was asking why we aren't banning flights etc.

auslass · 07/03/2020 04:21

@tud41 agree had pneumonia last year off the back of a flu. Wasn't fun. Would not recommend doing it again.

auslass · 07/03/2020 04:25

Hubby had a case at his work which I posted about, we have to go to Bristol as hubs wants to go to the football and Rugby with his dad. His parents in their 70's. Does anyone think thats a good idea? I don't, and not just because I'll be a sports widow.

Hubby doesn't seem to care and neither do they.
