Very excited when the email came this morning! Is anyone else up for this?

OP posts:
MaMaLa321 · 19/05/2020 09:30

thank you for the advice sooverthemill. I've started April today. I feel she definitely picks up the pace on this.

UnaOfStormhold · 19/05/2020 21:43

I've tried a few of the 45-60 full body practices but I'm also trying to fit in a bit of cardio first (mind and body are both missing all my regular walking and cycling!) so I've decided to start another 30 day challenge. I find I do like the certainty of knowing what practice I'm going to be doing each day. So let's see how Revolution goes!

I have a cheap Aldi mat which is doing the job OK - sometimes I need a bit more padding for my knees but it's easy enough to grab a blanket or fold over the mat.

Sooverthemill · 20/05/2020 20:47

@UnaOfStormhold oh I loved Revolution!

MaMaLa321 · 21/05/2020 19:31

What does FWFG mean on the program? Is it an optional extra session, or an alternative?

UnaOfStormhold · 21/05/2020 21:09

So it stands for Find What Feels Good and it's the name of the bit you need to pay to get access to. The videos tagged with FWFG are exclusive content from that section, but she always provides a link to freely available videos for people who don't have FWFG access.

MaMaLa321 · 21/05/2020 22:23

thanks una

GentlemanJay · 26/05/2020 23:39

Home got me started. I've completed it twice. Lol.

UnaOfStormhold · 27/05/2020 21:13

I definitely have a soft spot for Home as my first 30 days. Though I'm liked True and am enjoying Revolution (well, mostly, today was day 6!)

RedCyclamens · 08/06/2020 09:27

I have started Day 1 of 30 days today ( for the third time). I am a total beginner with not much endurance, will I be able to get through the challenge or shall I start somewhere else ( pointers needed). Thank you Smile

RedCyclamens · 08/06/2020 22:35

Hello - no one here, looking forward to suggestions?

MaMaLa321 · 11/06/2020 23:02

Hi red. I started recently as a very stiff beginner. I went through the 30 days, and now follow the daily calendar that you'll find on her website. If I can't do some of the exercises (which happens quite often) I do child's pose or something else I can do.
Enjoy! I might not be brilliant at it, but I've felt a lot of benefits.

Sooverthemill · 13/06/2020 13:58

@red sorry been busy. I started ywa as a beginner 5 years ago. I think each 30 days builds up assuming everyone is a beginner. My favourite is true tbh but I do all except dedicate (No idea why I just don’t like it) . Good luck and report back!

RedCyclamens · 13/06/2020 21:34

Thank you @MaMaLa321 and @Sooverthemill :) this is encouraging! Have done 3 sessions so far, will report back once I am through ( hopefully this time)

Sooverthemill · 16/06/2020 07:29

I've cancelled my subscription to FWFG ( felt very guilty) as we are saving money, I never use it, have subscribed faithfully since 2016 and I feel she doesn't need my financial support any more especially now the YouTube gives ads on everything! I also have found that recently I've been using yoga with kassandra more ( life being a bit tough I'm just doing 10 minutes and Kassandra are so much easier to find). I may resubscribe again

UnaOfStormhold · 17/06/2020 06:59

Don't feel guilty Soover, I'm sure you need the money more than Adriene does! How are you feeling these days, hope on the mend!

Sooverthemill · 17/06/2020 07:39

@Una thank you! Yes I'm feeling a lot better thank you, took a while . Been having dramas with one of the dogs and DD is very very poorly which is a worry. How are you?

UnaOfStormhold · 17/06/2020 19:29

Sorry to hear that about your DD, hope things start to improve and hlad you're feeling better. We're well, I'm gradually getting my back and hip flexors sorted out - it's a slow process and sometimes I realise too late that I've done something that irritates it. Still working my way through Revolution which I'm enjoying, interestingly varied in the middle section. Treated myself to a nice thick gaiam cork mat which feels lovely to move on and is kind to my knees.

Sooverthemill · 18/06/2020 11:05

Ooh lovely new mat! I'm trying to do a little bit every day ( did a 23 minutes session yoga wash/ detox today which I must bookmark as it was fab. Good old Adrienne

RedCyclamens · 27/06/2020 14:04

Just reporting back, have been pretty sporadic, on Day 7 of 30 days now. I also did a couple of Yin yoga - mainly upper back with Kassandra (to relieve upper back/neck tensions - which has always been a pain! ) - and find these to be very useful for relieving pain.

I have a couple of questions - how do you get your "downward dog" right, I always feel i am doing it incorrectly. Also, my wrists hurt a lot, not just in downdog but any poses where we have any pressure on wrists - any tips/suggestions are gratefully received. :)

UnaOfStormhold · 27/06/2020 15:08

Hello RedCyclamens, what do you feel isn't right about your down dog? You may want to visit the foundations videos as she has one on pretty much every major pose. But generally yoga is not about getting the pose "right" but about really being aware of your body through the pose and ensuring that your whole body and breath are supporting you in it. Getting the form right is far less important than understanding how your body is meant to work in each pose.

Wrists definitely get stronger with practice but some things that can help are really making sure you're pressing through your fingers (as if you were trying to lift your palms off the ground) mixing up with resting on fists instead. Some of Adriene's practices have no wrist work so you can always do those - day 10 of home for example.

RedCyclamens · 27/06/2020 18:38

Thanks @UnaOfStormhold :) good to know about wrists getting stronger.

Yes, makes sense about poses - I read about down dog that while you are doing it, there should nt be any creases in the front of your ankle - if there are it means you are not engaging your quads, which you must - no matter what I do, I always have wrinkles on ankles while in down dog even though I keep my knees slightly bent and heels off the floor.

UnaOfStormhold · 27/06/2020 21:43

I have no idea whether I have wrinkles on my ankles and haven't heard that one before! Everyone's body is different so it's better to work with where you are rather than confirm to an ideal that may not suit you. It's good to stay active through your whole body when doing down dog - indeed that's a good principle with most yoga poses. But the most important questions I think are about how it feels in your body, is it helping you stretch and strengthen, are you able to follow the breath, are you forcing the position or letting your body work into it. If you have wrist pain you may want to explore putting more weight on your legs - how does that feel?

RedCyclamens · 28/06/2020 12:23

Thanks @UnaOfStormhold - yes, all makes sense. During my practice today, I tried to push my weight out to the heel, this helped my wrists and also felt a good stretch in the upper back. :)

Did Day 7 today, although it was only 30 minutes - my beginners body felt the burn. Hopefully, this will get better as I continue to practice. :)

happytobemrsg · 12/07/2020 12:56

Hoping to get some advice as an absolute beginner!! Today I tried the 40 minute beginners video. I’ve been to a class before & it was awful. I’m not flexible & my balance is rubbish. But I do want to give yoga a proper go so I thought I’d try this. I enjoyed it & it felt more like a workout that I thought it would. Am I supposed to just keep doing that video over and over until I’ve mastered those moves? I don’t get what I’m supposed to do next! I like the idea of a course which I can do a few times a week. I’ve seen the 30 days one but I can’t do it every day. Maybe 3 times a week.

& hi 👋🏻 @Sooverthemill!! x

UnaOfStormhold · 12/07/2020 19:45

Hmm, I don't think you ever master the moves really - it's more about how you approach each pose, with full awareness of your body and breath. I am less flexible than I used to be and have a slightly dodgy back, but I have realised I'm actually better at yoga now than when I was a bendy student, because I have to feel my way carefully into each pose and work to my own limits.

Anyway, philosophy aside, there is definitely a stage of learning the basics so when she names a pose you don't always have to look at the video to know what to do, and have a rough idea what each is meant to feel like and how to make it work for your body. I'd recommend working through the Foundations of Yoga series - each video goes through one pose in detail and explains how to do each of them, with variations to tailor it to your own flexibility and balance (they're in reverse order on her website so start on page 8). Once you've worked through those you should be able to do any of the other 30 day series.

Lots of us on this thread find a daily practice works well because you don't end up putting it off but it's perfectly possible to do the 30 day journeys much more freely. I've taken up running so I do yoga every day but on days when I've been running I just do one of the runners yoga videos, and on rest days I do 30 day journey video (I'm currently doing revolution).
