Very excited when the email came this morning! Is anyone else up for this?

Thought you might enjoy this article

here about how Adrienne is adapting to quarantine yoga

lmnoh · 19/04/2020 21:46

I am new to yoga and have been watching Adrienne on YouTube, as recommended by you guys.

I'm loving it so far so thank you !

I'm going to look at the 30 day challenge next and also invest in a mat xx

Sooverthemill · 20/04/2020 06:26

@Imnoh welcome. A mat is a real help I have found. Started off on a cotton rug and worked myself up to a super duper one! Am contemplating starting 'home ' again from today. Not sure as have enjoyed ritual very much and may repeat that 7 days

speakout · 20/04/2020 06:39

I wouldn't spend too much on a mat if starting out.
Mats can be £££, but you can buy a perfectly adequate one for £15 or so.
Also you won't know the features of a mat that are important whan you are starting.
You may want an eco friendly mat, a rubber one perhaps.
Some mats are thicker and have more padding which are good if you need that for knees etc, some prefer a more solid mat because it gives more stability for balance and maybe use padding at various points when needed.
You may want a soft mat and move to the floor for balance poses.
Some mats have printed aignment details which some people find helpful.
Some mats- especially the rubber ones are pretty heavy- something to consider if you have to carry your mat to a class.

You won't know which of these features are important when you are new to yoga, so spending a lot on a mat at the beginning may not be the best idea.

lmnoh · 20/04/2020 16:06

Thanks for the mat advise !
I had no idea where was so much involved so I'm going to start cheap until I know my stuff and get into it.

Sooverthemill · 20/04/2020 17:51

Yes I agree, I did work myself up from zero to £7 to £15 to £80 over the 5 or 6 years I've been doing daily yoga. I never go to a class so weight isn't a consideration this is a good round up at all price levels.

UnaOfStormhold · 24/04/2020 19:49

Sorry, have been AWOL while trying to sort my back out - slowly getting back into a yoga routine again though I still have to be careful about backwards bends. Hope you're all coping through lockdown.

AlexandraPeppernose · 26/04/2020 21:01

Hi. Did my first ever yoga 3 weeks ago and just completed day 6 of home. I am so bloody proud of myself! (40, unfit, fat) I am doing things with my body I thought impossible. Still can't sit cross legged properly though

Sooverthemill · 28/04/2020 10:12

Hi @AlexandraPeppernose and welcome. Well done! You should be proud of yourself. Just getting started and into a habit really helps. Saying that, I didn't do any today as I overslept and had to rush to be ready before DH started WFH. I have been following the calendar and loving it. Particularly'belly'!

UnaOfStormhold · 05/05/2020 09:06

Welcome Alexandra, hope it is still going well. I am coming to the end of True and trying to get back into the daily routine as it definitely makes a positive difference when I can! A block or a blanket definitely help with the sitting cross legged - I have very inflexible hips so it is something that I do a lot. I firmly believe that yoga is fundamentally about working with your body where it is rather than where you think it ought to be!

Sooverthemill · 05/05/2020 09:54

I went off piste today and did a 10 minute morning yoga with kassandra. ( recommendation on another thread). Really enjoyed it though takes a bit of getting used to another teachers rhythm.

This is because my YouTube app in my smart TV won't display the May calendar except as an auto play playlist. So I have to fast forward each video to get to the right day and it just makes me so cross I lose the benefit! Any ideas? I am not very tech. I could use iPad but without my glasses I can't see the screen.

UnaOfStormhold · 05/05/2020 12:35

I find smart TVs very frustrating so can't help much. Do you have the option to type in search terms or a url, so you could find the right details on your phone first? Or use Chromecast or whatever equivalent your tech allows to play directly from your phone/laptop?

Sooverthemill · 05/05/2020 13:17

@Una I've tried all that! I suspect someone who doesn't usually do it did the upload! Never mind

speakout · 05/05/2020 22:24

I've just had a look at yoga with kassandra. Thanks for the suggestion.
I competed Adrienne's 30 day, and now working through 30 day True, but finding it a little slow and needing something a bit more challenging. kassandra looks worth a try.
Any other suggestions appreciated.

speakout · 06/05/2020 10:06

Just wanted to thank Sooverthemill for the recommendation for kassandra- her morning sun salutation was fantastic, very energising- just what I was looking for.

Sooverthemill · 06/05/2020 10:50

@speakout yiu are welcome, someone recommended her to me! I have added in her 10 minute morning calendar to my YWA routine and it does feel good. Still love Adrienne but I have been faithful for 5 plus years 😀

RosesandIris · 06/05/2020 12:38

I can’t find the 10 minute workouts, Could
someone please link? I feel I need to start with short bursts. Just can’t motivate myself to do anything.

speakout · 06/05/2020 13:15

Have a look at Adrienne's playlists- she has ordered them by length- should find it here:

www.youtube.com/user/yogawithadriene/playlists?view=50&sort=dd&shelf_id=18

RosesandIris · 06/05/2020 15:05

Thank you speakout

Sooverthemill · 07/05/2020 13:26

On the off chance you meant the 10 minute yoga with kassandra videos I referred to, they are here @RosesandIris

I do feel a bit guilty but added her 10 morning one to my 19 minute YWA one today and it was really good to have the contrast. Very similar in attitude I would say.

speakout · 07/05/2020 13:35

Sooverthemill

I think it's nice to mix up styles.
The whole world of yoga seems to have unfurled since I started- 35 years ago.
It was one style or another. I started with Iyengar yoga- a great foundadtion- but have tried out lots of different styles over the years.
Even now I am not "faithful" to one yoga style or teacher.
Depends on my mood, my energy, I most often go to early morning Hatha type classes, with some really dynamic Vinyasa when I am going through more energetic phases.
I notice many more Hatha teachers incorporating Vinyasa techniques- for instance the Chataranga to down dog sequence in their classes. Yoga postures are often used in circuit training or end of work out stretches too.

Although flavours of yoga still exist in purer forms, there is a great deal more cross over.

I know my RL yoga teachers attend all kinds of classes themselves, rather than feel they have to be faithful to one teacher or type of practice.

Adrienne's videos are great, but my time is limited, so I need shorter but more dynamic sessions- kassandra seems to fit the bill- for now!

StrawberryFizz26 · 10/05/2020 10:51

Hi All,

Another newbie to yoga here. I did 2 days of Adrienne, beginners last week & really enjoyed it. I'm going to aim to do at least 5 days this week, alongside a big walk & limited gin.

I really liked the way it made me feel & I did it over video chat with DP so it's nice to have something to do together.

I know the mat question has been asked loads but what does everyone recommend? I've got a really cheap b&m one at the mo, which is quite slippery & with my birthday coming up, I've put one on my list. I've been looking this morning & OMG, there's so many to choose from. Any recommendations greatly received.

mimiasovitch · 13/05/2020 22:11

Hi all. I've been a bit absent lately, but have been quite faithful to a daily practice which has kept me sane. Starting back at work
This week, so it may be a bit of a challenge to keep it up, but I really must try. I didn't fancy the May calendar, so I've been doing Dedicate. I remember now it's the one where she was a bit too chatty, but with a bit more practice under my belt I'm ok to use that time to centre myself and my breathing.
@StrawberryFizz26 I've just had a Manduka Eko mate for my birthday. It's a natural rubber one, quite thick but supportive in balance postures still. I like it a lot, but it really attracts dust and, more significantly, dog hair. My pooch is large and very hairy. I spend half of my time in down dog blowing it off. Still happy with it though.

MaMaLa321 · 16/05/2020 10:27

I'm just coming to the end of Home and wondering what I can do next. Does the calendar suggest a video for every day? And do you have to subscribe to get it?
I very much want to continue with structured practice.

Sooverthemill · 16/05/2020 11:36

@MaMaLa321 the calendar does suggest a practice for every day. If you go to YouTube YWA you should find it. Tbh I don't like this months much because it's mixed in with meditation and I just want to yoga so I've resaved the yoga videos to my own playlist. Try the April playlist ( nurture) which was lovely. On YouTube these are all free. To use her app you pay a monthly fee.

@mimiasovitch I didn't get in with dedicate either! I dint like the chitchat much as I feel it's distracting ( for me). I've been mixing up this months calendar with last and using yoga with kassandra's 10 minute morning series which is great. At the moment 10 minutes is often all I have.

Re mats @StrawberryFizz26 I started with a £7.99 one and now my mat was £100. Go for a mid range mat, google best yoga mat and you will find list of reviews, I really like my expensive one as it's non slip and comfortable for my knees ( but I am quite old at 62)
