this is not a thread about the pros and cons of working/not working, i just wonder if anyone finds that stay at home mothers are really smug about the choice they've made? or is it just my experience? cant they just live and let live? I dont judge them, but they seem to be very judgemental about working mothers.

anyway, a friday topic for anyone at work trying to get through the day perhaps!!

The giraffes at the zoo are pretty full of themselves as well now I come to think of it.

LilRedWG · 29/08/2008 12:02

Nah - giraffes are cool dudes.

Slubberdegullion · 29/08/2008 12:07

Oh ruby, I quite like goat smell myself. Quite a subtle earthy aroma. If we're going to do animals that ought to be utterly ashamed of the way they smell then otters win my vote.

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 29/08/2008 12:08

Crows strut around looking a bit supercilious, though I accept not exactly smug.

You can test for smugness with the stare off. I have been defeated by goats, giraffes (crick in neck) and some cats. I have been victorious against cows, sheep (no contest) and guinea pigs.

helpmehelpmydd · 29/08/2008 12:15

yes agree cats are the smugest animals of all.

smug bastards

sagacious · 29/08/2008 12:17

Slubber - you've stared a cow down?
Bullocks!

Mind you I'm so facinated by their eyelashes I go sort of hypnotic.

So perhaps I'm being hasty.

never had experience of it. how would you know they are being smug, the look on their face?..... what are they saying to you?

i'm a sahm, have lots of friends that work full-time, when we get together we're all the same, no one judges, we're all mothers...end of.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 29/08/2008 12:29

I dont think I have met many smug SAHM or many smug WOHM.

What I personally object to is the way that any parent feels they have to justify their choices - whether you are WOHP/SAHP, your choices for your families should be supported by other parents we encouter. It gets very bitter all this I'm-so-better-than-you-because arguments.

I respect the choices made by a SAHM in the same way I respect the choices made by a WOHM - if it is working for your family, brilliant All I ask for is the same curtesy, which sometimes can be a little hard to come around.

OneLieIn · 29/08/2008 12:39

I have met loads of smug SAHMs 'oh its so wonderful', 'you don't know what you're missing', 'oh you have to work??', 'you must hate missing those special moments'.

I think people just do the best they can wiht the hand they have. Whatever you do, you're doing the best, but don't gloat about it.

cikecaka · 29/08/2008 12:39

I am a SAHM but through no choice of my own. DH works odd hours so childcare would prove very expensive! I wouldnt call myself smug!

Umlellala · 29/08/2008 12:39

I am a SAHM. I am quite smug - if by smug you mean happy.
As a SAHM, being with my children is my full-time job so I want to be (and think I am) good at it, and get 'job satisfaction'. I like my job. Dh earns enough to cover our mortgage and living expenses but I am quite enjoying being thrifty - and one day I will prob be earning again. We would probably move if we had to, so I could stay at home. I love iT!

Tbh I found it hard being a WOHM - just like being a WOHDad must be hard- because you in effect have two jobs that you have to commit to... I do really enjoy all the bits that go with being a mum (was a v maternal teacher before - and want to foster) so it works for me to be at home. Am merely doing what is best for me and us. The smugness/gratefulness I guess, is feeling sorry for those who are not enjoying their lives - maybe by wishing they were in a different job. I don't judge anyone who is happy with their lot.

Slubberdegullion · 29/08/2008 12:41

sagacious, I most certainly have. So long as you are not intimidated by their size and 4 stomach thing then it's not so difficult. I mentally prepare myself by repeating the mantra "If I wanted to, I could put my whole arm up your arse". I bet the cow isn't thinking that.

Slubberdegullion · 29/08/2008 12:42

I might try that next time I meet a smug mother.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 29/08/2008 12:44

lmao at the cow comments!

I'm happy with my lot. I'm work FT, I am a mother and I am a PT student. I rarely sleep. But my DD loves me, I earn enough to keep the roof over our heads, and I'm always

FWIW, I say I haven't "met" any smug parents (regardless of whether SAHM/WOHM) with exception of on-line where people feel because its just words to a faceless person, it doesn't hurt, and I get a lot of "projections" from older women who have done their child raring and perhaps not happy with the choices they made iyswim

pagwatch · 29/08/2008 12:47

rofl at slubber
I bet the cow isn't thinking that either.

Slubberdegullion · 29/08/2008 12:54

Oh I don't know. If you practice your hard stare long enough I think you can mentally convey the message "blink or I'm going to get the long gloves".

bramblebooks · 29/08/2008 13:02

Reminds self NOT to go walking on the plats with slubber.

pagwatch · 29/08/2008 13:02

why would i not be surprised if you actually have the long gloves?

I so want you to meet a smug SAHM now...
