If you, as a manager, heard this at work...?

Would you tell the other manager.

The team who sit next to me in the office (small wall partition), their manager is off this week and one of their team came in this morning and joked with 2 of the other members about their manager being off.

She said "we can relax now ahhhh "name" is off all week"

This person has said something before which I did tell the manager about. I feel irritated that she openly complains about her manager.

WIBU to tell the manager when they return next Monday?

That sounds like a normal jokey comment, no I wouldn't tell the other manager.

Agreed

MelisandeLongfield · 10/02/2025 13:47

Just sounds like a joke to me.

TokyoSushi · 10/02/2025 13:48

No I'd leave it, our boss is out today and we've said the same thing, and then carried on working as hard as usual.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 10/02/2025 13:48

Massively unreasonable. It's a joke, a minor things like that get said everywhere - I've had bosses say things like that to me! (Don't be slacking too much whilst I'm gone, etc)

LuckysDadsHat · 10/02/2025 13:49

Well aren't you a joy to work with! Come on most people have this sort of joke in their workplace. Stay out of it, it's not your team and not your business.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/02/2025 13:49

Just a joke, say it all the time at work lol

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 10/02/2025 13:49

If you reported that back to me as a manager I'd ignore you and mentally characterise you as a clipe who needs to keep her eyes on her own work.

Total nonsense, a jokey comment and none of your business.

Hercisback1 · 10/02/2025 13:49

Unclench. No way does this need passing on. I'd probably say that to my managers face🤣

BitOutOfPractice · 10/02/2025 13:50

No. No I wouldn’t.

Yep

Pipsquiggle · 10/02/2025 13:51

No. Do not report it.

FYI - if you did report this, it would make you look worse not the person who said it

WellsAndThistles · 10/02/2025 13:51

Crikey, bet you're little Miss popular at work 🤣

ChonkyRabbit · 10/02/2025 13:51

Same.

Nodlikeyouwerelistening · 10/02/2025 13:53

If she’d come in saying “oh thank F that (insert insult) isn’t here” you’d have to say something. But we all make jokes about leaving early or whatever when the boss isn’t there. I don’t think she’s said anything offensive. I don’t think it’s any worse than “Thank god it’s Friday”. We all know that means “thank goodness this week is finally over and I can get out of this place!” But that’s perfectly acceptable to say.

Pavlova31 · 10/02/2025 13:53

Nothing more than a light-hearted comment. Nothing more to it.

Pinkelephant66 · 10/02/2025 13:53

Wow. Of course not

JudgeBread · 10/02/2025 13:56

Lmao no. I've been a manager and if that's the worst thing my staff were saying behind my back I'd be happy. And if you came running to me to tell on them when I got back from my hols I'd think you were a bit of a nob.

People need to vent, if you're in management that venting will often be about you (even if you're a good manager, sometimes you just become the face of all the things wrong with whatever company you're with). It's just part of it, as long as they weren't saying something really egregious I'd just leave them to it.

MagentaRocks · 10/02/2025 13:59

I'm a manager and will report/deal with inappropriate behaviour. This is not thar. Just normal chat between colleagues

Marmite27 · 10/02/2025 13:59

No, we quite regularly say, the bosses off, shall we pack in and go to the pub. As of yet, we’ve never actually gone.

same as when someone says to me, what do you think I should do with this, my stock answer is, delete it and pretend you never saw it. It’s just banter.

Influencerofcrap · 10/02/2025 14:01

If your post is anything to go by, I’m sure your team probably feel the same about you!

OctoberandApril · 10/02/2025 14:02

I share an office with the MD and the other Directors will ask if I'm having a nice chilled week if he's not there. It's not nasty, they just mean I'll be doing my work without extra tasks.

FeathersMcgraww · 10/02/2025 14:02

It’s a joke. And if the other manager returns to find their team have infact not done any work in their absence then they will notice and can deal with it. Nothing to do with you.

Slobberchops1 · 10/02/2025 14:03

crikes, I bet you are really popular at work .

weren’t you ever told to not tell tales at school ?

Spirallingdownwards · 10/02/2025 14:05

Yes you would be massively unreasonable

As you haven't posted in AIBU for a poll I cam see already that reasonable is 0% and unreasonable 100%.

Your own post says "jokingly said..." Dread to think what the previous occasion you told tales referred to.
