I'm curious... what hours do you work and how old are your kids?

Just like the title says really... how many hours do you work and how old are your kids?

I have a 3yo and I work 40 hours a week... I used to work 45-50 hours so I have cut down but I'm still burnt out. Am I expecting too much of myself to work full time?

I have 3 kids - teenager, primary school and toddler. I work 20 hours a week.

I wouldn't work more unless I absolutely had to. I'd be drained.

I feel I have a good balance now - contribute to the financials of the home, some time away from just being a Mum. But not run ragged enough that everything's a rush/feel like I don't see the kids. I WFH too so have the luxury of no travel time

BuffaloCauliflower · 16/11/2022 16:21

I have a just 2yo and pregnant with my second, currently work 3 days a week 9.30-5.50

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/11/2022 16:21

37hrs and I have a 8yo and a 10yo.

I've worked ft since I left school, so just carried on when the kids came along.

Oatsamazing · 16/11/2022 16:23

I have one 2 year old, I work 37.5 hours and my partner works 40. I work one weekend day though so between us we are home with DD 3 days a week

BigScreen · 16/11/2022 16:23

I work part time until the youngest turned 6. Then went full time (in a stressful job).

SunThroughTheCloudsAt6am · 16/11/2022 16:23

12 and 8 and I work 40-50 hours - single parent with low contact, so I do everything.

And yes, I'm burning out. I've promised myself that for my next birthday I will drop to part time, because at the moment, my day starts at 5am, and I am timetabled to be doing something for all of it, and I just carve out an hour in the evening to sit and do nothing (and a second hour to do housework/kids stuff) before I drop into bed at 9pm ready to do it all again.

astronewt · 16/11/2022 16:23

I work a standard 37.5 with DC aged 8 and 5.

I did 30 hours until they were both in school and then upped it again. I find it fine.

girlmom21 · 16/11/2022 16:24

3 year old and a 1 year old. 37 hours (standard full time at my work). I used to do 42.5 then found a much better role.

Your support scaffolding is key. If you have good reliable childcare and someone to share the drop offs/pickups with, and a decent level of help with other domestic drudgery, then full time is entirely doable. If you're trying to do it all solo or with minimal help, it's going to be hard.

ScoobyDoNot · 16/11/2022 16:25

15 & 12 and I work 24 hours over 3 days.
I enjoy the balance and wouldn't want to work any more.
I do feel fortunate that I don't have to work more (or at all).

Januarcelebration · 16/11/2022 16:27

kids aged 11 and 18. Work anything between 35- 50 hours depending on what’s going on.

Always worked full time.

MarshmallowsOnToast · 16/11/2022 16:27

Have a 2.5 year old.

Work 40 hours per week.

His nursery is 1.5hrs drive each way.

His dad & I have split so apart from 2 nights a week it all falls on me.

Struggling a bit!

Very true. I have all of that and I manage FT + study, although things do get a bit stressful when I have a lot on with uni.

3 year old and I’m 6 months pregnant, I work 30 hours over 3 days but might drop half a day after maternity leave. DH works long hours, if he had a 9-5 job I think I’d do 4 full days.

DragonMovie · 16/11/2022 16:31

Have a 4yo and a baby. Before baby I worked officially 4 days but with the workload that was 40-45 hours per week. Post mat leave I’ll go back 3 days to aim for 30-35 hours per week.

Dox9 · 16/11/2022 16:31

9-13 5 days a week. Have one primary age dc. Its fantastic for work-life balance for us and I fully intend to keep it going as long as I can. I contribute extra to pension so its accumulating at same rate it would be if I was FT.

ElizaSkye · 16/11/2022 16:32

5, 3 and I’m pregnant.

I work 2 days, but they’re long days about 7.30-5.30

completely agree it’s about logistics and support, I would do 3 days if I had parents or in laws able to do one days childcare for example, but as it is the drop offs/pick ups/childcare fees are all on me so doing more hours would feel really intense and not financially worth it until we get some free hours

Orange93 · 16/11/2022 16:33

My kids are 10 and 7, but I've been in my job since they were 6 and 3.

I work 28 hpw in a school, so it fits in perfectly and I only need childcare on training days and after school if we have meetings.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/11/2022 16:34

Varies as self employed mn

30/40hrs averagely a week but have been known to do 50hrs but also 20

I work nights of 10hrs so depends if work 2/3/4/5 nights

Floydthebarber · 16/11/2022 16:35

7 and 5, I have worked 34 hours over 5 days since I went back to work with dd1. I'd struggle a bit with a full 40 hr week. This is a nice balance, I can do my job but the getting in from work isn't quite so manic.

Stickmansmum · 16/11/2022 16:35

40hrs and 4 kids under 9. Always worked full time and didn’t take much mat leave. I luckily have a very good job and excellent nanny since baby#2 was born.

cptartapp · 16/11/2022 16:38

20 hours. 19 years away at uni and 17 years.
I've worked 20 hours since DC1 was four months and have no intention of ever doing any more. In fact, will be retiring at 55 in four years - NHS.
Very lucky to be able to make these choices.

MolliciousIntent · 16/11/2022 16:40

I work full time, 8-5, and my children are 3 and 9m.

CactusPricks · 16/11/2022 16:40

I work 35 hours a week, mon-fri, 9-5 with an hours unpaid break. my kids are 11 and 6

MrFlibblesEyes · 16/11/2022 16:43

Have a just turned 3 year old. Work 35 hrs a week but it's mon-fri 7am-2pm. Dh works a 9-5 wfh job so he does all the drop offs and I do all the pick ups! Works well for childcare!
