I'm curious... what hours do you work and how old are your kids?

Just like the title says really... how many hours do you work and how old are your kids?

I have a 3yo and I work 40 hours a week... I used to work 45-50 hours so I have cut down but I'm still burnt out. Am I expecting too much of myself to work full time?

I worked 24 hours a week over 3 days from kids grinch 1/2 until youngest was at school and then increased to 28 hours over 4 days. When dc were 6/7 I increased to full time hours. They are now teenagers and I work 43/45 hours per week.

Dts are 11, work FT, hours could be ninety or 30.

When I first went back I did three days then four over five now ft

Cherrysherbet · 16/11/2022 21:39

my youngest is 11. I have two adult children also. I work 6:30am-2:30pm 4 days per week.

I was lucky that I didn’t have to work until my youngest was 6yrs. I don’t know how you do so many hours with a little one. Much respect to you.

YingMei · 16/11/2022 21:58

My DC are 7 and 10 and I work 35 hours per week. From home so can do school runs etc

TildaRae · 16/11/2022 22:56

3 children, 20, 19 and 5.

I work 32 hours over 4 days 8-5. My ds uses the school wraparound provision.

I did do 40 hours over 5 days, but wanted to drop a day.

DelilahBucket · 16/11/2022 23:07

14 year old and anywhere between 30-70 hours as I'm self employed. When ds was a toddler I worked 35 hours (9-5 hours with three out of four Saturdays while DS was at his dad's).

Wonderwoman333 · 17/11/2022 07:07

13 hours per week over 2 days term time. 3dcs 14, 9 and 5.

Reluctantadult · 17/11/2022 07:13

Always surprised by people saying 40hrs as standard. I'd never heard of that before mumsnet. Always thought 37.5 was standard.

I do 25hrs, 9-3, kids are 8 & 5.

Its just the difference between considering a standard day as excluding a lunch break (7.5) or including it (8). People contracted to 37.5 and people contracted to 40 probably do the same working hours on average, all else being equal in company culture, type of job, etc.

2 kids

Would like to reduce to 3 but we need the money 💰

My contract is 37 hours which is whole time in my industry, however my role is snr so I'm paid a salary to do my job and that means a normal week is 43/45 hours. That's not ever week, some weeks it's more, in school holidays I try to limit work to 6.5/7 hours a day (I work in a school but I'm whole time).

2pinkginsplease · 17/11/2022 10:47

30hrs over 5 days with a 19 and 20yr old.

the last two years I was working 40hrs over 5 days and I felt I was constantly chasing my tail with washings, house work etc. 30 hrs is perfect for me.

Lucky91 · 30/11/2022 08:50

My children are 12,8 & 7. I work 27.5 hours per week Monday-Friday term time only 8am-1.30pm and DH works full time and is able to take the kids to school before work and I collect the 2 younger ones from school.

RedLeggedChuff · 30/11/2022 08:58

Two jobs, 35 hours (full time) + 8 hours (part time) over 6 days. Three kids, all in their teens.

It's not been my best plan, but all the part time money goes straight to saving for Uni. Despite having regular savings for all three, we've not been able to get nearly enough together without this.

JustFrustrated · 30/11/2022 10:03

Full time with a 13 and 10 year old.

Worked full time since the youngest was 3.

trevthecat · 30/11/2022 10:07

Dc aged 12, 10 and 5. Work 17.5hours a week, at uni one day a week as a full time course. In final year now so will up hours at work next year. Probably won't go full time though, maybe 25/30 hours

LaMariposa · 30/11/2022 10:08

35 hours a week, one day a week in the office. DH does 40, fully home based. 5yo and an 8yo. Means with a bit of wrap care and grand parent help we don’t feel too stressed - although the house is always a pit and there’s never enough time for hobbies.

I went full time at the start of the year after being part time or on mat leave for 7 years. Thought we’d feel really well off but it’s actually only covered the cost of living.

HowCanIPayItForward · 30/11/2022 10:10

M-F 7:30-12 so 22.5 hours, almost all at home. DH works FT, starting later so he does the morning routine/school drop and I do the bulk of the housework as well as the pick ups and after school acticities. Works well for us and I hope never to go back full time.

DC 9 & 7.

Coffeesnob11 · 30/11/2022 10:59

In my 40s lone parent to 4 year old. Contracted 37.5 in reality it's 45-60 hours. 3 days are commuting to London or travelling round uk. The extra hours are done on the train or at night. 2 days working from home. I am exhausted permanently.

Givenhud · 30/11/2022 11:18

I do 7.30 to 5.15 Mon and Tues then 8 til 2 on a Wed. We have a 7yr old and a 14yr old. My husband and I weighed up me increasing my hours in what can be a very emotionally intense and stressful job but is two minutes walk away with me changing jobs to do more hours.

I would not increase my hours in my current job (he understands why as he briefly did the same thing before leaving due to stress). I could be paid more if I did more hours elsewhere in the same kind of thing but we would need another car, to pay for childcare, a cleaner etc. It just wouldn't be worth it.

We are fine for money, I have almost all of the school holidays off and we do not need to pay for any childcare at all. I manage all of the housework, shopping, cooking and can attend every school function.

Dreamwhisper · 05/12/2022 17:17

After DC1 was born I returned 24 hours per week. Briefly went to full time before second mat leave (very kind of work to offer as we receive 6 months full pay on MATL). Wouldn't do full time out of the home again until DC are much older, if ever.

After DC2, 20 hours per week worked across 5 mornings, then went up to 32 hours per week for a few months compressed over 4 days. Was a good balance.

After DC3, 30 hours per week but from home. Again good balance especially with no commute time.

Now youngest DC is almost 3, I have recently accepted a full time role but again it's from home and I have flexibility around school runs.

Had a full year of mat leave off with DC 1 and 3 and 9 months off with DC 2.

veiledsentiments · 05/12/2022 17:24

Always worked full time. Was back to work when both children were around 6 months. Kids are now 24 and 20. Now work the hours I want. Some weeks it can be 30 hours, other weeks around 20. I love it.

Dinosaurdrip · 05/12/2022 19:06

14, 13, 10 and 32 weeks pregnant.
I work 37.5 hrs over 4 days, work from home and start at 5am to get finished earlier which makes things alot easier for school holidays etc.

lieselotte · 05/12/2022 19:17

My ds is 20 now but during his life I have had the following working patterns:

end of mat leave to 2 - 4 days a week
2-3 FT but with a day a week at home
3-5 FT and then 4.5 days
5-9 FT with a day or two days a week at home
9 onwards, part-time in various roles

Forzatesoro · 05/12/2022 19:41

Single parent to two teens and a tween. Work 45 hpw from home. 2 jobs
I work a 9 day fortnight so every second week I have a day 'off'

No cleaners/outside support. ExDH has them one night during week and one at weekend but its literally a sleepover

Hobbies sports coincide with my nights during the week; alternating every weekend (matches/training) and I'm about ready to drop
