I'm curious... what hours do you work and how old are your kids?

Just like the title says really... how many hours do you work and how old are your kids?

I have a 3yo and I work 40 hours a week... I used to work 45-50 hours so I have cut down but I'm still burnt out. Am I expecting too much of myself to work full time?

1 7yo, I work 15 hours (2 full days) a week. I solo parent most of the year so I won't do any more.

ladywithnomanors · 16/11/2022 18:05

3 teenage DC and i work 24 hrs a week although i occasionally do extra shifts

MintJulia · 16/11/2022 18:06

DS is 14, school bus stop is 7 miles away so I'm needed for school runs

I work from home, 8am-5.15 four days a week. I go to the office once a week.

Pythonese · 16/11/2022 18:06

Three 19,16,14 and I’m supposed to work 37.5 hours on a shift pattern which can include nights, early starts, evenings, weekends and bank holidays but we all do more hours.

Nectarpeach · 16/11/2022 18:06

Most weeks 40, the occasional week 52, I have a 4 year old and 16 month old

LindseyHoyleSpeaks · 16/11/2022 18:10

Full time, various ages, upper primary. Busy but not an issue. DP also full time. Both of us value our careers but are lucky that we can be flexible around school runs and activities.

Blankscreen · 16/11/2022 18:11

My DC are 9 and 12 and I work 30 hrs a week over 5 days.

Tbh I am finding it too much on top of all the clubs they do.

DH has a full on job and leaves the house at 7 am and get home about 8:30pm and is often away- like he is this week.

I can't really do my job in less than 30 hrs and often ended up working extra in the evenings so dropping a day isn't really feasible.

Feel a bit stuck as don't want to give up work completely but equally both of us working is too much.

DH out earns me about 6 times and his job offers no flexibility so it's me that needs to pick up the slack.

2DC 14 and 10yrs. I'm now FT 37.5hrs, I was PT since DC2 was born, I did 3 days and slowly went up to FT during lockdown, I'm flexibly wfh so I can do the school run and have the DC home with me whilst I work. Saved a fortune in after school childcare.

drkpl · 16/11/2022 18:12

I work 40 per week (plus an extra 10-20 hrs for studying). I worked pt 24 hrs from when he was 15 months 3.5 years. Dp works 37.5. We have a 4 year old. I’m knackered. I enjoy my son even more now I work full-time. It’s hard not seeing him so much though. I’m not even free on the weekends bc of the studying (part of the job- still in training). This morning I left early as I usually do, and ds was up and about. I felt a pang of guilt and on the way to work, I could have cried as I miss him so much. It has to be done though, we’re barely getting by even with us both working full-time.

Echobelly · 16/11/2022 18:14

My kids are 11 and 14 and I work 40 hours, and have done since they were 18 months and 4 years old. But I have been lucky to have quite 'easy' kids, plus a lot of family support for babysitting - and my jobs were always sedentary and fairly low pressure office work.

SallyWD · 16/11/2022 18:14

Our children are 12 and 9. My DH works all the hours God sends so in contrast I work only 17 hours per week. Completely fine if both parents wants to work full time or part time but this works for us. It means I can usually do the school run, take care of things domestically etc. When they're older and more independent, I'd like to increase my hours.

babyyodaxmas · 16/11/2022 18:16

I work 42 hours a week only Dd left at home now she is 16. I went FT once Dd was 8 and DS 11. Did 2 early finishes until both at secondary school.

gwenneh · 16/11/2022 18:16

My DC are 12, 9, and 3. I work 40 hours per week, usually 7:30 to 4. DH works from home and does the school runs apart from nursery and school activity pickup, which I do on the way home.

KnitFastDieWarm · 16/11/2022 18:22

37.5 hours, full time, fully remote. Lucky to work for a very flexible and supportive company, so on days i have DC (primary age) i work 9-3 with no lunch break and then 8-9.30 in the evening once they’re asleep. On days DC are at their dad’s, I work 9-5 and take a half hour lunch break.

I’m a single homeowner so need the money, and I LOVE my job, so this works for me.

TheTeddyBears · 16/11/2022 18:24

I've got flexi and wfh 3 days a week so generally I work roughly 8.40-5pm. Take my lunch at 2.45-5.15 and pick my daughter up from school. Roughly I work around 23-25hrs per week but contract to 22.5 hrs. Get the time back though through flexi. I sometimes finish earlier/later or log bk on in the evening if I have a deadline. My kids are almost 3 and 5.

When I worked full time I often worked 40-45 but sometimes less dependant on what was going on and what deadline I had. I love working part time and earn good money so I don't need to work more. Will go full time again but not sure when, at the moment I'm thinking not until kids in high school.

My mum only worked 25hrs when I was in primary but in my mind I always felt like she was working as I had to go to grans after school. Now I know she didn't work that much it makes me realise the perception of children.

Chicci1 · 16/11/2022 18:26

50 hours a week. Two dc under 7. Dh does the same. It’s exhausting but required in our careers. It takes a toll on us but the dc are such happy well adjusted little people and I think they have a great life.

Hugasauras · 16/11/2022 18:26

21 across three evenings. It's pretty perfect for us. No need for wraparound care and I or DH (work v flexible) can always make events during day.

Hugasauras · 16/11/2022 18:27

Oh and fully WFH although I like to go into office occasionally just to see people

weebarra · 16/11/2022 18:27

I'm rubbish compared to you! I work 17.5 hours in a management role.
I have three DCs, 9, 12 and 14. The oldest two are neurodiverse and DS1 has a chronic health condition involving many hospital visits which means it would be hard to do more hours.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 16/11/2022 18:28

37.5 hours and one 12 month old

Hugasauras · 16/11/2022 18:29

Whoops and kids are 3.5 and 5 months so still on mat leave with second but going back in April.

SchrodingersKettle · 16/11/2022 18:29

I'm 45, have a 3 yo and a 12 yo.
I wfh; I am employed 40 hrs a week but in reality i do regular overtime averaging around 10 hours a week.

Dh is also FT with some overtime.

We make it work because we can wfh and i have a cleaner for 4 hrs a week, plus i took a demotion to reduce my seniority and responsibility.

itsme432 · 16/11/2022 18:30

8 year old.

30 hours per week. 9-3 mon-fri

resipsa · 16/11/2022 18:30

7 and 11 here - 3 days or 21 hours but in a job where you work to the demands not the clock so often more. Husband is away about 2/3 weeks every month. For me, it works even though I occasionally feel guilty for my reduced financial contribution (tempered by knowing that he could not go away as often if I were not here to take on the kids).

allfurcoatnoknickers · 16/11/2022 18:31

3 year old and 16 weeks pregnant - 40 hours a week, with the off week that's more like 45-50 and 2 bonkers weeks a year where it's more like 70 hours.

I find it fine - DS works long hours, but is pretty senior at work, so does a lot of the drop offs/pick-ups and doctors appointments etc. We don't have any other family help.
