I'm curious... what hours do you work and how old are your kids?

Just like the title says really... how many hours do you work and how old are your kids?

I have a 3yo and I work 40 hours a week... I used to work 45-50 hours so I have cut down but I'm still burnt out. Am I expecting too much of myself to work full time?

I'm on mat leave with my second DC, but when I go back I'll be working 30 hours in a stressful job (so will probably end up working over my hours to stay on top of my workload).

My plan is to make DH do more pick ups and drop offs (I did most of them before) and to price up a cleaner. Aiming to go back full time once the youngest is in school.

SarahAndQuack · 16/11/2022 16:48

At the moment I work a minimum of 18 hours and a max of around 35 (have worked more but rarely). Previously I was working long hours of full time (quite hard to estimate but well over 40), and so was DP, and it wasn't working very well. I am not sure what the right answer is though - I am worrying about money. But DD is 5 and it is really lovely not having to stress about childcare, so I guess it comes out even. We don't pay for any childcare bar the occasional babysitter for an evening out.

Two teenagers. I work paid three days a week but mostly more than that. Recently went part time is to help me manage a long term condition. Fortunate to be able to do that but makes my job trickier.

IggyAce · 16/11/2022 16:51

Dcs are 16 & 12 and I work 21 hours per week.

moleeye · 16/11/2022 16:51

Have an 8 and 4 year old. Currently contracted for 28 ( 4 days) but easily do 40. Tempted to go back full time!

In all seriousness I will be going back full time when youngest starts school next year and I'll juggle my hours around a bit, but DH and I split drop offs and pick ups and I wfh 2 days a week.

I know it will be a bit of a slog as I have a stressful job, but the money will make a big diff as it's effectively a 20% pay rise.

16 hours. Kids are 11&9

Thatsplentyjack · 16/11/2022 16:54

I work 38 hours a week from home, 3 kids, no childcare. That's me massively cut back. Before I had my third child I worked 50 hours a week. Tbh I don't think I should be working at all as I do everything for the kids and dog and EVERYTHING around the house buy unfortunately we can't afford that.

If you are a lone parent it is a lot, yes.

if you have a partner then you both need to work out what’s manageable.

You’re expecting a lot from yourself, but are you also expecting a lot from him/her?

don’t forget the childcare burden isn’t yours alone. If you both reduce hours or negotiate flexi working it can make it more manageable all round, rather than just you losing hours, potential promotions etc.

outsourcing helps too. Get a cleaner, gardener, send out laundry, hello fresh meals etc. so. Your free time is your free time to relax and have fun with your child.

HappyAsASandboy · 16/11/2022 16:55

Well until recently I worked 40 hours a week with four kids aged 11 down to 2 years old. Worked full time all the way through.

I did burn out though. And now I've stopped work completely for a bit while the oldest ones transition to secondary school.

MissCrowley · 16/11/2022 16:56

9am-5pm Monday to Friday. I have two aged 7and 8- they also have various clubs/ after school activities but between me and DH we seem to be a pretty good team in getting everyone where they need to be.

WalkingOnSonshine · 16/11/2022 16:59

Nearly two year old.

I work 0.8 FTE which should work out as 29 hours.

I do 9-5 on the two days in the office and 8.30-5.30 on the two days I’m at home.

DS is in nursery four days a week from 8.15-5.30. We have no family help to take him out earlier or fewer days.

I work 37.5hrs mon to Fri and have a 2yr old and a 1yr old

Notsa · 16/11/2022 17:02

Mine are now 20, 18 and 10 but have always worked 40 hours a week throughout. My OH and parents also all worked full time so it took a lot of planning when they were younger (particularly when I had three in three different schools). A mixture of holiday clubs, annual leave, me working days and OH working nights was needed.

BettyStogs · 16/11/2022 17:02

I have an 8 yo and 11 yo. I work 37hrs a week, some from home some from office. I did 30 hours until they were both at school. DH now works 30 hours all from home and does school run and bulk of cooking/laundry etc. Think we would struggle getting everything done if we were both full time. Still don't feel like I have much free time. Would like to reduce hours but not an option in my current job or financial situation.

purplemama1990 · 16/11/2022 17:03

I work 46 hours a week. I have a 3yo and currently pregnant with second child.

trying29 · 16/11/2022 17:03

I have a 7 and 5 yr old and I work 40 hr week compressed into 4 days in the office. My partner works full time too but 2 days a week at home

Hoppinggreen · 16/11/2022 17:03

8.30/9 - 3 but if I’m needed after 3 I will work and take the time off later. It’s very flexible on both sides

Sorry, DC are 17 and 13

Cuddlywuddlies · 16/11/2022 17:05

39 hours, 2dc ages 7 and 9

Greycatclub · 16/11/2022 17:12

I probably average 30 hours a week (freelance) and have a 1 year old and a 9 year old step daughter.

mynameiscalypso · 16/11/2022 17:15

I have a 3 year old. I work 4 days a week but it's pretty full on and I think I've slipped into the bad habit of doing 5 days worth of work in 4 days. I'm definitely heading towards burnout but hoping to reset over Christmas as I have two weeks off.

greaterscott · 16/11/2022 17:27

I could never have managed that when mine were little, no wonder you've burnt out.

I used to do about 20 hours a week (they've grown up and left home now)

Rotherweird · 16/11/2022 17:29

I have a 14 year old and work 25-30 hours over 5 days. I still find it knackering! (Single parent so have to do everything at home). But I do know how lucky I am.

kopiy · 16/11/2022 17:32

I think hours aren't everything, the commute, job & workload make a difference.

I work 30 hours with 2 dc in primary but 1 day is from home & I drive or walk. Please my job is shut the computer down & forget it 95% of the time.

kopiy · 16/11/2022 17:34

Your support scaffolding is key.

Yes i have family help & DH wfh 2-3 days a week plus we can afford to outsource.
