I'm curious... what hours do you work and how old are your kids?

Just like the title says really... how many hours do you work and how old are your kids?

I have a 3yo and I work 40 hours a week... I used to work 45-50 hours so I have cut down but I'm still burnt out. Am I expecting too much of myself to work full time?

1.5yr old. My husband and I work on average 40-50hrs a week each, we compress our time so our child does 4 days 0800-1800 at nursery then we split one day between us. Works well, don’t feel overly tired and feel we have quality time all together. We both share all parenting duties equally as well as household chores and have a cleaner once a week which was the best money we’ve ever spent. I think this set up works really well for us.

I'm rubbish compared to you! I work 17.5 hours in a management role.
I have three DCs, 9, 12 and 14. The oldest two are neurodiverse and DS1 has a chronic health condition involving many hospital visits which means it would be hard to do more hours.

I don't think anybody has or would judge you for working significantly less than FT in those circumstances; if they do they can eff off. I wouldn't be able to do what I do if I had to manage what you are managing.

Managinggenzoclock · 16/11/2022 18:32

21 hours spread over school days. Children are primary school age.

forevercooking · 16/11/2022 18:34

2 five year olds. I work 20 hours per week

DaltonMedallion · 16/11/2022 18:35

I work full time and have an 8 yr old. Have been doing this since they were 3.

Thankfully I work from home 95% of the time. If I had to commute every day I'd be done in.

It's still a lot to juggle. I'd love to be part time. Or not work at all!

Monkeyseesmonkeydoesn · 16/11/2022 18:35

37.5+, 2 kids (2 & 6), no family near by so rely on wrap around breakfast and after-school clubs.

Runnerduck34 · 16/11/2022 18:36

Not surprised you are burnt out OP.
Hope you have lots of support, cleaner etc

I have 4 DC all teens- early twenties
younger two teens have sen so need more of my time.
I work 30 hours over 4 days. Day off allows for appointments or catching up with household stuff.
The best working pattern I had was 22 hours over 3 days, that was a good balance but career/ salary does take a bit of a hit.

weebarra · 16/11/2022 18:37

@astronewt , thanks! I do judge myself a bit! DH works 40+ hrs and I take on a lot of the mental load. We're lucky that I don't have to work more.
I do a lot for the school/PTA though, which is also good for the kids.

sjxoxo · 16/11/2022 18:38

Yes imo you’re expecting a lot of yourself.
i have an 8 month old and don’t work at all yet. He is at nursery 2 days a week aswell & im still f*ed come Friday!!!! No way in hell could I manage a 40 hour working week with a child not at school yet. Xx

mewkins · 16/11/2022 18:41

38 hrs a week but mainly from home (so usually works out longer than that). Pre lockdown I was 4days a week in an office and one day at home so I find the hours now easier as it's flexible and I get to do most school runs with no hassle. I am a single parent but co parent well so we cover for each other when one needs to go in early. My mum is also local so does the occasional school pick up for me, especially in the summer. My kids are 8 and 12.

GlitchStitch · 16/11/2022 18:43

I work 40-45 hours per week Mon to Fri, plus on call over the weekend about every 6 weeks. I have a 14 and 7 year old. I'm lucky that I have some flexibility in my job so I can take time for special school events, kids medical appointments etc. I'm in my early 40s though, low iron, bit unfit and don't feel I really have time or energy to do anything when I'm off.

You'd manage it if you did it. You just do.

DramaLlamadodah · 16/11/2022 18:46

One fifteen year old. Just dropped down from full time and am now contracted for 20 hours a week. My health suffers when I work full time so I deliberately found a role with a low amount of hours, if I’m feeling ok I can work for longer. Multiple physical disabilities and mental health problems.

kopiy · 16/11/2022 18:47

Work is a breeze compared to a baby/toddler!

janie85 · 16/11/2022 18:48

I have a nearly 3 year old and work 30 hours over 4 days. I'm also pregnant with DC 2 and plan to go down to 3 days (so 22.5 hours) when I go back next year!

Zezet · 16/11/2022 18:59

Management style full-time job, kids 6y, 4y, 5m. I work 40+ hours but I leave at 4pm, and work again 8.30pm - midnight from home.

As I am the boss of my department, and my own boss trusts me, I have very little stress. I can happily tell people I am going to a school event at 2pm and will come back later.

I switched to the management job (before this I was the right hand of the "CEO", and was dependent on this schedule) partly because I knew it would be a lot easier with the kids.

Singlemum1991 · 16/11/2022 19:06

Used to do 30 a week with 1 kid from age 3-6 had to leave job due to pandemic now just getting agency work which is rubbish hours like usually average around 16 hours. I want to work more but don't have any wrap around childcare since pandemic.

Howmanysleepsnow · 16/11/2022 19:08

From when my eldest was 4 months til my dc were 12,11, 6 and 5 I worked 37.5 hours.
I work 40h now and they’re 9,10,15 and 17. I do/ have always done all pick ups/ drop offs etc

Overtherainbow9 · 16/11/2022 19:11

1 DD aged 4. I do 30 hours over 4 days. 8am-4pm.

Grumpybutfunny · 16/11/2022 19:19

DS is 9. Technically work 37.5hrs shift work so can work a 59 hour week one week and 24 hours the next. DH does a similar pattern. DS goes to a combination of after school clubs and grandparents, I find the shifts help as we get more days off than a 9-5 week

Manifest828 · 16/11/2022 19:25

I gave a 2yo I work full time at 37.5hrs but I end up staying an additional 1.5hrs daily to cram in most of my to do list so I'm looking at 45hrs pw

BlackberriesArePurple · 16/11/2022 19:54

My children are 4 and 5. Been a lone parent since they were babies. No family help. I work full time. I don't sleep much.

Doublechins · 16/11/2022 19:58

4 kids ages 4-12 and I work 9.30-5.30 mon to Fri and I alternate working Saturdays with my husband, one week he works next week I do

Freckl · 16/11/2022 21:03

I've got 4.kids ages 3 to 11and I work 31 hours. It's just a tiny bit too much at the moment, so I'm hoping to drop down to 25 hours in January. I was doing 22.5 but upped my hours temporarily during a busy period. I can't work from home in my role, but luckily my husband does.

Leah5678 · 16/11/2022 21:07

5 year old and 16 hours a week
