I'm curious... what hours do you work and how old are your kids?

Just like the title says really... how many hours do you work and how old are your kids?

I have a 3yo and I work 40 hours a week... I used to work 45-50 hours so I have cut down but I'm still burnt out. Am I expecting too much of myself to work full time?

Oh & I have 9 wks annual leave which makes a difference.

DC 10 and 12. Teacher. Work at least 50 hours a week but some of that is evenjngs/weekends around the children. Also have school holidays so normal wraparound childcare is sufficient. 12 year old has come home alone and let herself in since starting secondary school and is usuall home for a couple of hours by herself. I find it so tiring though as by the time I've come home, taken DC to various activities, cooked, had dinner it's 9pm and I still have to do a couple of hours work.

DH is also a teacher so we have a surplus of adults during the school holidays but term time is stressful. No family nearby. I worked 0.6 until youngest DC was 7 which was much more manageable.

22hrs over 4 days WFH. Term time only.
Kids are 9 and 6.
I'd happily work 5 days (I do school hours) of we had the hours available but any more wouldn't be worth it if we had to pay for childcare.

Numbat2022 · 16/11/2022 17:38

37 hours over four days, three year old who is with me on the fifth day. No cleaner, very little childcare outside of nursery. Completely burnt out but not much I can do about it. Next year he'll go to school and I'll have a day off in the week to do all the housework I haven't done for the last four years.

Beachhutnut · 16/11/2022 17:39

Same. 22 hrs over 4 days term time. For me it's a good balance.

berksandbeyond · 16/11/2022 17:40

I work 27.5 hours a week. Remote. School hours.
One child who is 4 and in reception.
DH works full time, 2 days in the office, 3 remote

pinkpixie83 · 16/11/2022 17:42

Single parent, with only every other weekend with their dad, 14, 12 and 10, currently working 26 but going up to 37.5 in January

Mogloveseggs · 16/11/2022 17:42

Dc 18 living elsewhere but needs support and dc 10 at home and I have fibromyalgia.
work 37 hours twice a month and 29 hours the other weeks so I get a weekend day off twice a month. I'm exhausted.

Crimsonripple · 16/11/2022 17:42

Gh12345 · 16/11/2022 17:53

I have 2 toddlers, work 17 hours a week. Just enough for me to have a good work/life balance

Chomolungma · 16/11/2022 17:56

30 hours a week, three teen DC.

jennymac31 · 16/11/2022 17:57

I have a 9 year old and a 5 year old. Both DH and I work 35 hours a week.

NCHammer2022 · 16/11/2022 17:59

30 hours, 1 4 year old. It feels about right. I would work more hours if all the school drop offs/pick ups weren’t all on me but unfortunately they are.

Welliesandpyjamas · 16/11/2022 17:59

3 kids, one an adult and the other two are 13 and 10.
Due to the nature of my job, for 7 months of the year I work 6am til 3pm, five and a half days a week, but on standby to respond to issues using WhatsApp all week. The other half of the year I work one day a week flexibly.

Friarclose · 16/11/2022 18:00

34, sometimes a few extra overtime on a Sunday. I have one ds who is 12

BayCityTrollers · 16/11/2022 18:02

I didn’t manage full time until my dses were much older. I did 15 hours a week when they were pre childcare, working opposite to dh. Increased to 22 hours when ds2 started free childcare, 34 hours when they both hit school age (all night shifts) and only went full time day shifts when ds2 hit aged 12 years.

We benefited from never having childcare costs but the years of nights took their toll on my health.

I’m still full time, dses are now (just) adults.

MsPolly · 16/11/2022 18:02

3 and 8 months. About to go back working 22.5 hours over 3 days

whiteroseredrose · 16/11/2022 18:03

My DC are at uni so I work condensed hours 8am -5.15pm 4 days a week.

I gave up work when DD was 1 and DS was 4.

I then gradually worked upward initially 3 mornings a week when DD was in Y2, then 4 mornings then full time very locally when she was in Y6.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/11/2022 18:04

I left my job recently but before that I was doing full time but term time only. I did 8-3 5 days a week and had 3.5 hours “flexi” but what that usually meant was I was in at 7.30 and worked through my unpaid lunch.

IveDroppedMiBiscuitInMiBrew · 16/11/2022 18:04

My children are 6, 4 and 1 and I work 40 hours a week in a fairly stressful job, my husband does 50+ teaching. It's hard juggling, our 1 year old isn't a good sleeper and we are up very early to get everyone up and out the door. Pt isn't an option, I earn more and I wouldn't want to sacrifice my career (or indeed my pension). It is really hard and we are completely exhausted most of the time.

Inasec24 · 16/11/2022 18:05

Approx 7-5, 4 days a week, term time only.

Kids are 6 and 4.
