Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort.

Seven blankets already with women on the rocky road of cancer treatment in Candy's name. Love in every stitch we say and it really is true. Together we go on, Candy is with us every step. Star

For anyone joining us, and please do, this is an ongoing project, just jump right in, this explains what we are doing and all crafting info. Thank you EVERYONE! x

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here.. and third here

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. ALL welcome over there.

Thank you so much Thanks

Thanks, book : looks like posting little and often is the way to go , then : how many do fellow knitters tend to send off at a time , and do you have a preference for quantity per parcel/ envelope, K and P ?

MadisonAvenue · 27/02/2017 19:08

Fingers crossed that Woolly Hugs wins!

Just looking at all of these lovely colourful squares!

Yaiyoula I had to laugh at you going to buy one shade and coming home with five plus new needles Grin

MadisonAvenue · 27/02/2017 19:09

Yia, not Yai....sorry!

Oh, and meant to say that I find it's the measurements of the parcels which is more restrictive.

Jux · 27/02/2017 19:31

Haven't been able to do any crochet today Sad. I love work, but it does get in the way of life!

More lovely squares, and great colours!

I have a bamboo hook. It is nice and light, but the hook is quite pointed and can (and does) split the wool sometimes, moreso than any of my old metal hooks do. I like it though.

FurryLittleTwerp · 27/02/2017 19:40

I'm better at the simple ones! Except I have the heart on its side FFS Grin
Still going to do another spiral though...

Loads more lovely squares appearing - I love all the photos.
Thanks LucienandJean and Chippin for the crochet encouragement. I have a hook and have been eying up tutorials but I just need to get a bit of time to get a proper go at it. My 2.5 year old has been more 'boisterous' recently and is impeding my concentration! It's always easier just to cast on another 30 stitches and I'm back on a square. We're off to a cottage for 10 days at Easter and my plan is to try then - it's bound to rain sooner or later... I was only winding the wool for what seemed like hours as I gave my mum about a third of a ball of each of my colours. The bag is now emptying so I may need to buy more Smile
Yia I'm imaging K&P like the scarf lady in Sarah and Duck (if you watch such delights!) She's always knitting, can make anything and has a craft room stashed wih lovely wool in all colours - and a pile of peskies that talks!

Yiayoula · 27/02/2017 21:04

Thanks, Madison -no worries, I answer to all sorts ! I'm going to go down the Jiffy bag route in future I think , have a stash of used ones that I can recycle. I didn't intend to buy five balls, but got chatting about Woolly Hugs in the shop and the assistant was so helpful bringing out other colours, and I hadn't taken the Candy list with me so so was trying to remember what ones I could pick....no, it's a fair cop, I just got a red ( Lipstick? ) mist in front of my eyes and bought all five, 'cos I NEEDED them !!!

Sadly Sarah and Duck has passed me by, Scallion : am assuming it's a television programme? grandchildren don't live in the UK , so I'm not up to date with current programmes. We cram as many books as poss into our cases when we visit, though : they loved Hairy McLary and Horrid Henry, Your vision of the pesky ends sounds great !!

KnittingSister · 27/02/2017 21:11

Hello
I've been lurking for a while and thought I'd say hello Smile
I've knitted two squares and I'm thoroughly chuffed because I wasn't sure I still could! My mom taught me to knit but I never really got into it. I thought I could manage a 6 inch square though and it turns out I've managed two and started a third (lime). I also bought a crochet hook so I'm going to give that a go as well - never crocheted before, so that will be interesting...
spice and boysenberry, they are more square than they look, I promise!

Jux · 27/02/2017 21:17

Furry, re the spiral. So I just have to fudge it a bit?! Grin You're brave going for another; but we're here with you and will cheer you through the worst Wink

Yiayoula · 27/02/2017 21:19

Welcome, Sister ! This is a great place to be, you are amongst friends. Lovely squares btw.
I'm signing off now because much as I love you all, David Tennant needs me tonight.....

VittysCardigan · 27/02/2017 21:20

Hi Knitting welcome to the friendliest bunch of yarn pushers you are ever likely to meet. It's a slippery slope & before you know it you'll be wanting just one more ball & losing hours looking for new patterns. Well, that's what happened to me anyway Grin

CraftyGirly90 · 27/02/2017 21:29

Sister I guarantee you that you will HAVE to make time to do housework etc before you start knitting/crocheting because you will get very distracted by it. At least that's what happened to me x

MadisonAvenue · 27/02/2017 21:29

Hello KnittingSister it's lovely to have you join us Smile Your squares look good, Spice is a favourite of mine. Crocheting is pretty easy once you get into it. I struggled at first but something suddenly clicked with it and it started to make sense. Quite a few of us on here have only been crocheting for a few weeks.

Yiayoula I've not actually used Lipstick yet.
My kids are older so I also missed out on Sarah and Duck (felt a bit nostalgic when one of the Teletubbies appeared on The One Show earlier though).

TheoriginalLEM · 27/02/2017 21:29

Grin yarn pushers!! i love it - i used to be a fly pusher but this is much more fun!

MadisonAvenue · 27/02/2017 21:32

Vitty that's exactly it! You sit there and think you'll work just one more row before getting the hoover out and two squares later you're still there BlushGrin

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 27/02/2017 22:00

Hi Knitting and welcome! I taught myself to crochet a few weeks ago (was originally going to knit) and I'm well and truly addicted! I can thoroughly recommend the Bella Coco tutorials on You Tube, that's what I and several others on here used!

Good luck!

PS I love Spice too and Tomato, and Empire, and Lipstick, and...you get the idea!!!

bookbook · 27/02/2017 22:29

Evening!
and welcome Knitting - us knitters have to stick together - ( erm - looks at crotchet squares....Blush ).
Madison - I am a true fan of Sarah and Duck - DGS (4) loves them , but so does everyone else. They are a joy if you can find them to watch- perhaps you know a youngster so you can? - there are lots of subtle joys in them - there are books too :)

FurryLittleTwerp · 27/02/2017 22:36

I'm creating a monster! This one's easier than the other Jux - really, it is!

The pattern is here

diamantegal · 27/02/2017 22:46

Dammit! Only just got back from work. This is not a sensible time to start hooking, but I can't resist one more round. Plus I've been drinking Wine with our offshore team, so it's not as though tonight's square will be any good in the sober light of day anyway

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 27/02/2017 23:18

Hi all

I've caught up on all the posts, but my eyes are too tired to post much. Thank you Marcipex & Madison 😊😊

I started two different spirals today. The one Furry did was tricky the first eleventy billion couple of times, but I think it's going to be ok, the second type started with a magic circle was easier, but it's just a three round tutorial, so I need to look at his to square it off. Too tired tonight.

I've done two 6" CTC this evening- very quick & easy, but they don't make my heart sing. But they'll be good, plain, fillers.

I'm really going to have to get on with 'Far Less Interesting' stuff & not be so easily led astray...

Oh - love the Skulls Packaging 🤣

FurryLittleTwerp · 27/02/2017 23:35

So pleased with this Grin

CraftyGirly90 · 27/02/2017 23:50

Furry that's fab! Wish I had the skill to do something like that, however I can barely so basic and granny square and even they don't always turn out right x

TheHatOfDoom · 28/02/2017 00:02

Haven't had a chance to post for a day or two. The good news is I have 11 finished squares to send off. The bad news is I have 11 squares worth of ends to sort out first. And I am not good at ends.

TheoriginalLEM · 28/02/2017 00:09

Furry that is amazing! although it looks like witch craft!!

12" c2c for me - took aaaages! pleased with it though

I love the Sarah and duck love on here. Scarf lady's wool stash is my dream!

knittingsister your squares look great. I prefer crochet to knitting but only because I am such a painfully slow knitter.

furry that square is amazing!
