Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort.

Seven blankets already with women on the rocky road of cancer treatment in Candy's name. Love in every stitch we say and it really is true. Together we go on, Candy is with us every step. Star

For anyone joining us, and please do, this is an ongoing project, just jump right in, this explains what we are doing and all crafting info. Thank you EVERYONE! x

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here.. and third here

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. ALL welcome over there.

I was going to ask which green that was book

Spindelina · 09/04/2017 08:33

Well, it did start to make sense. But I decided that my use of the 'enlarge' facility hadn't been extensive enough (I was trying to squeeze it into 6"). So I've unpicked it, enlarged more, and ready to start again (now with the intention of making a 12").

Madison - I come from a large family, so all the baby clothes tending to move around ! But I do have a case with speciial clothes - christening gowns and the layette my DM knitted for both of my DD. My DGS had the shawl from his mum at his christening. He was miles too big for the gown ( to the relief of my son in law - DD was going to use it :) )
Spin If it doesn't make sense to you, we have absolutely no chance at helping! Grin

MadisonAvenue · 09/04/2017 20:22

I've got some of their special clothes saved book
Some of the toddler things I'd saved went to my cousin for his son. The rest went to the charity shop as there wasn't a baby, or any due, for them to be passed on to.

Spin I'm baffled just looking at the photo

Evening!
I have had a rather hard day at the rock face ( allotment) so I sat down this afternoon and did a square, then I have done a simple granny tonight. Set of Kelly Green/Saffron/Boysenberry done.
Need to get out the colours and see what to do next. Mind you - I have been browsing Ravelry, and all the ones I really like are 12". so I may just do one of those for a change.
Tonight I have DH watching golf, so I am going to relax and do a bit of the Little Hug I think :)

Okkitokkiunga · 09/04/2017 21:28

Those are nice book. Are plum and boysenberry very similar?

bookbook · 09/04/2017 21:39

they are Okki - plum is a tweak darker/deeper, thats about it :)

Spindelina · 10/04/2017 06:59

They're lovely, book.

NormansNipple · 10/04/2017 17:57

book they are lovely!

I'm a tiny way through my first little hug. I'm alternating between that and some daffodils and Easter chicks.

scalliondays · 10/04/2017 18:40

bookbook · 10/04/2017 22:35

I'm plodding tonight - just 6" into a 12" er ......

Lucienandjean · 10/04/2017 22:49

I did all my peskies this evening. It took me nearly 3 hours, but weirdly I quite enjoyed it. Now I just need to parcel all the squares up and send them off.

bookbook · 11/04/2017 08:25

3 hours! Star !

Spindelina · 11/04/2017 18:42

Finished a 12" crochet texture on the train today. Had a lovely chat about WH with the two ladies who were sitting at the same table - one of them even got her knitting out for me.

shatteredstudentmum · 11/04/2017 20:02

I've been practicing lots of different squares and finally finished a mitred square. Only 4 attempts! And now it's only 5" not 6 Sad all good experience!

My other attempts at various 'textures' are ok but not all the same size and all a bit wavy on the edges, is this normal ? Am I doing something wrong when I cast on / off? I'll try and get a picture.

bookbook · 11/04/2017 22:38

I take it you are knitting shattered? Textures can certainly end up wavy. Mine are curly usually :) I have started to do a simple garter stitch border around my squares , that way it helps the construction crew. I wouldn't worry about them being different sizes -:)
I am plodding on with my 12" - 9" in - it seems to be taking forever !

NormansNipple · 11/04/2017 22:54

Spin I love chatting with other crafters Smile

shattered if you know how to crochet a border of trebles would sort the size and neaten up the edges. If not I'd send it anyway, I think the construction crew are magical beings!

bookbook · 11/04/2017 23:02

I love chatting about crafting, - I wonder how many Woolly Huggers there are out there :)

flutterworc · 11/04/2017 23:39

Nerr - what a gorgeous baby. Mind me asking where you got the pattern from...? I'd happily pay for it on Ravelry....Grin

Twitter - hope the love we wove into each square keeps you warm in the coming trials. Flowers

Lots of lovely squares as our brave and noble troops return from the Chernobyl trenches!

NerrSnerr · 12/04/2017 14:27

Thanks all, luckily he's very placid at the moment so I have been mastering knitting with him on my lap! Will have a couple of packages of squares to send for this project end refugees too.
I'm loving seeing everyone's squares and the finished blankets.

KnottyAndPistey · 12/04/2017 16:15

Pistey here back from Mexico to an absolute woolly mountain, bear with :) Gin xx
