We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Spindelina · 18/02/2017 12:23

Raptor I really don't - I've just taken photos of all the dark colours in the vibrant riot palette Grin

PopGoesTheOysteryBullshit · 18/02/2017 12:50

Gutted!

I'm about half way through a ctc square.

It's 12.5 inches!

I'm not going to be able to send it in, am I?

FurryLittleTwerp · 18/02/2017 12:59

Yarn has arrived Grin Petrol, Teal, Empire, Boysenberry, Claret & Fuchsia - lovely!

Also splashed out on a couple of Clover hooks Smile

Planning an attack later, but I really need to get some housework done first - sigh!

PopGoesTheOysteryBullshit · 18/02/2017 13:03

FurryLittleTwerp · 18/02/2017 13:07

That's lovely Pop. How annoying about the size!

Could you pick up round the edges & make it bigger perhaps?

PopGoesTheOysteryBullshit · 18/02/2017 13:09

I wanted to send it in as a square. 😐

FurryLittleTwerp · 18/02/2017 13:09

I mean as in go for a whole blanket! Shock

FurryLittleTwerp · 18/02/2017 13:09

Cross-post - sorry

Sad
WitchDancer · 18/02/2017 13:23

That's a fabulous piece Pop. If it's only 1/2 inch out I would send it in with the hope that the makers can fudge the difference

SpaghettiMoon · 18/02/2017 14:15

Pop it will be fine trust me (construction crew member!)

Jux · 18/02/2017 14:43

Gin chin chin

It's nice to have gin now, and it will always make me think of Zombie ❤️

AmethystRaven · 18/02/2017 15:01

I managed to save my square! The edge looks wrong at the end of a row but I'm hopeful the construction wizards can work their magic on it.

I saw the latest blanket on Facebook, it is so beautiful. They seem to radiate positivity.

Is plum the darkest purple? I'm a bit disappointed how similar it is to boysenberry. I might have mixed all rhe purples up in my head Confused Still a lovely colour though.

MadisonAvenue · 18/02/2017 15:06

Pop that is wonderful! Send it!

Annahibiscuits · 18/02/2017 15:57

spaghetti how do you connect them? Do you knit them together or sew them? What do you do with the backs? (Getting a bit obsessed with the blankets cuz they are so beautiful)

Marcipex · 18/02/2017 16:14

Jux Ive started that square, here is the beginning, and up to round 4.

TheHatOfDoom · 18/02/2017 16:57

Annahibiscuits I think I read they crochet them together. Certainly when I made a blanket for my baby DN out of squares that was what I found looked best but all of those squares were crocheted. I don't know if that makes a difference?

Jux · 18/02/2017 17:00

Marcipex that's lovely! Mine was a complete disaster. I was getting chains and stitches into chains all mixed up - one try I was making a chain which went through another chain, half at the front and half at the back, and then I couldn't stitch my way back on the chain because the first one was in the way, and I just got really, really confused.

Seeing yours gives me a much better idea of what's meant to be happening! Thank you, it proves that every day's a learning day!

So many beautiful squares. Spindelina, fwiw (and it's probably far too late), I like the plum and the lipstick, but actually they're all good, and if you had time and enough of the other yarns you could do lots of combinations.

Pop, the icecream square is reallyfun and clever. Is that knitted? I like the stitch, what is it?

FrenchDucksSayCoinCoin · 18/02/2017 17:01

My additional wool arrived Smile. I'm also now the proud owner of a darning needle, so sewing in the ends is far easier. Plus I can now attach the flowers I made at the workshop before.
I have temporarily given up on the waves, I had a fairly huge misunderstanding of the pattern. Will give it another go later. For now I'm having a go at a striped square and am getting weirdly stressed when I join on the next colour, then laughing at myself because it's such a weird thing to stress about!

Annahibiscuits · 18/02/2017 17:33

WORKSHOP you say???!

SpaghettiMoon · 18/02/2017 18:06

annahibiscuits I crochet them together, it's quite simple to do the join itself. Matching up the sides isn't too hard even with uneven lengths because once you have found the middle of each side, you work to that from the corner and essentially adjust to the tension of the squares. (e.g. one might have 30 knitted rows to join to 15 crochet stitches - then I would crochet a joining stitch twice into each crochet square's stitch and once into each knitted square's row). If that makes sense!!

Marcipex · 18/02/2017 18:42

SpaghettiMoon I didn't really understand. So you start in the middle of the sides, not a corner? It sounds difficult.
