We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Raising a glass (not whiskey though) and a bamboo needle to lovely Zombie this evening. I wore red cardy and shoes to work this evening.

What a woman. What a legend. What a legacy. Star

Evening.
My very first attempts at crotchet squares for Candy's hugs seemed appropriate for doing today , as a small tribute . Though I decided against the chevron design, as I am not competent enough to size it up to 6 " , once I had checked the instructions. ' They are not as evenly sized as my knitting, but done with love .
But I think back to knitting tomorrow :)

Annahibiscuits · 17/02/2017 22:47

I really want to make some squares....what yarn/colour range is that? I usually order from loveknitting.com

But, I can only do plain squares. Is that any use??

bookbook · 17/02/2017 22:53

Anna - in the OP at the top there is a long list for the colour palette - its Stylecraft Special DK :)
Plain is fine - its what I normally do ( knitting )
Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

TheoriginalLEM · 17/02/2017 22:57

It is the style craft special dk. The list of colours is in the OP. I order from love knitting too x

Annahibiscuits · 17/02/2017 23:15

Thank you.
Are there any patterns available for the more fancy squares? I could give it a go

Jux · 17/02/2017 23:46

I found this pattern, and a few others of similar difficulty allcraftsblogs.com/crochet_square_patterns/fishermans_ring_square/fishermans_ring_square.html I started this one but it was too difficult, couldn't a
Even work out how the pattern worked. Tried it about 5 times and it just didn't work. I'd love to know what the more experienced crocheters make of it. My problems began on Round 2 Blush

Marcipex · 17/02/2017 23:54

Jux, I'll have a try tomorrow and post a pic. It's a lovely texture if it works.

If not it will give people a laugh.

Gin dear Zombie, much missed xx

diamantegal · 18/02/2017 00:43

Jux it looks lovely - but well beyond my level of expertise, I'm sticking firmly to the beginner level ones for now. Although I tried a beginner one from a library book tonight and gave up after round 2 as I just couldn't work it out. Went with a basic granny square in an interesting variety of colours instead - DS likes to choose a "collection" for each pattern so I'm blaming it all on him.

Just to check - my squares are generally coming up at 5.5 inches but with plenty of stretch to bring them up to 6 inches when joined - presume that's okay?

And Chipping (and also everyone else but Chipping always mentions everyone by name so deserves the same back!), thanks so much for your encouragement. I'm really chuffed that I've found a new hobby that's so addictive by also genuinely useful. Wool Warehouse may also be quite pleased but we'll gloss over that one.... Grin

Annahibiscuits · 18/02/2017 01:13

Please tell me that's a crochet pattern jus?! Really hoping it's not knitting, cuz it looks like gobbledegook!

bookbook · 18/02/2017 08:33

are you a knitter Anna ? If so, I have been using lots patterns off ravelry ( there are lots of free ones) - just search dishcloth patterns and afghan squares .

Annahibiscuits · 18/02/2017 09:10

Thanks book

Yeah, I can knit. But I need a pattern. I'm not proficient or creative enough to do it without

I'll look at that site, thanks

WitchDancer · 18/02/2017 09:18

I'm a knitter and am using the patterns from my knitting subscription thing. It's the one where you knit squares for a blanket and they are happily 6inches. I can take a picture of a pattern or two if that would help?

Annahibiscuits · 18/02/2017 09:41

I would love that witch if you don't mind

WitchDancer · 18/02/2017 09:46

No worries, I'll do some as soon as I can drag my sorry arse out of bed. What kind of thing do you like? Something simple or a challenge?

bookbook · 18/02/2017 09:57

Ooh , that would be good too for me too if thats okay Witch - I make most of mine up , just using lace patterns and textures into the right size square :).

Aroseforemily · 18/02/2017 10:04

This is my first weeks worth. I did a couple of 12 inch ones but they seemed never ending so will stick to the 6's. I received some wool from wooly hugs and my friend donated some me too, so I have loads now!
Should I save them up and send all at once or every 20 or so?

This one would be good for one to be embellished in the middle

A bobble one - I love this one as I found once I did a couple of bobbles I could do them really quickly

WitchDancer · 18/02/2017 10:49

Apparently I'm on my limit of pictures so I'll do some more tomorrow.

Blimey Ariseforemily, that's loads! They're lovely and the colours are great

Spindelina · 18/02/2017 11:42

Lipstick, plum, grass green.

My favourites are tomato and claret, I think. And given that I might not have enough on my ball of tomato, claret might be easier.

That's not going to ruin it, right?

I like lipstick and plum!

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 18/02/2017 12:05

Spindelina you have a really good eye for colour, as I think any of those would work Smile

I am rubbish with putting colours together so I wouldn't put much store in my opinion (I really like Spice though).
