Following on from our previous support thread please check in here if there's any help, particularly (but not exclusively) knitting help, you need for the squares for 3girlies, who sadly lost her beloved 6-year-old dd Flora recently.

The details of the blanket project are here and it directs you to the Crafting Guide on Woolly Hugs, with specific sections for crocheters and knitters. I am still maintaining the original document mostly because I haven't got around to separating out the stuff that's already on Woolly Hugs now from the newer suggestions we've had in the last few weeks. So please, by all means do send me suggestions for new patterns or ideas.

For those of you on Ravelry and participating in the Ravellenic games, I think squares could be entered under a number of categories such as balance beads, doubleknit boxing, lace longjump among possibly some others.

I am three squares away from putting together my lapghan - it will be 5 squares wide and 8 long, and a mixture of knitting and crochet.

I went a bit wild and invested in 15 balls of Debbie Bliss when I was in the UK last week - that should keep me going for a while on DSs' blankets.

I think you may have single-handedly rescued the UK economy there Shredded! Wink

I am nearly finished doing this little dress which has come out a rather different size than I intended but never mind!

I still need to put the sleeves on this cardigan and I also need to get finished on my heart blanket!

Oh No! Is it nearly Christmas?

Report
tribpot · 11/09/2012 19:47

No it certainly is not, Rosie, except in crafting terms.

Quick Q. If a pattern says use 16" circulars does that include the needles, or is it just the cable?

Report
tribpot · 11/09/2012 21:47

It's the cable length, Glaikit. 16" = 40cm, which is the shortest length you can buy, I think.

Liking the little christmas decorations trib!

I did another square tonight. Yippee, only 2 to go now, and I can get back to the Debbie Bliss. Grin at saving the UK economy.

My ds has been complaining that this blanket which my Mum knitted for him as a baby is now too small for him. What with him being 7, I'm not that surprised Wink. So my next blanket project (hmm, next but one as I want to do one for a good friend whose wife is due next month) will be this dino blanket.

If people are looking for other projects to do in the meantime, the Refuge blanket campaign has got underway, although they haven't released this year's pattern book yet. (Not that should stop anyone from getting started, last year's book has some awesome patterns in). At the mo this is for complete blankets only but I'm not sure we'd find it impossible to put together a blanket between us!

Trib I love the dino blanket! I may have to learn iner intertaisia intertiasia to knit with two colours! Grin

My mahoosive bag of stylecraft wool arrived yesterday which had to be smuggled in past DH in a style usually only reserved for another new pair of shoes. Still struggling to crochet into a foundation chain though so after a bit of practise I switched back to knitting the ballet cardigan!

I'm occupying myself constructing MrsY's and making baby clothes Blush

I have a ball each of mid green and pale grey baby cashmerino - any (crochet) suggestions? They don't really go together so a blanket is out. Maybe a lacy cowl for me in the grey?

Aha! pidj! Any advice on putting my lapghan together (am off to work now, so no hurry)?

Report
PurplePidjin · 12/09/2012 13:10

How did you make the squares?

Report
NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 12/09/2012 17:46

pidj, they are a mixture of knitted squares and crochet grannies, the same kind of dimensions as the MN blanket squares except a bit smaller because although it was DK the wool is a bit finer. Am thinking crocheting together might be better (and quicker) than sewing. Any top tips?

Yep, crochet so you can adjust for varying tensions. This is how i do it:

  1. vacuum to get rid of the worst of the cat hair
  2. group the squares by approximate colour then work out how many there'll be per row
  3. lay them out on the floor
  4. faff around with them for an hour or so
  5. give up and make coffee
  6. collect each row into freezer bags labelled 1-however many
  7. crochet row 1 to row 2 as a continuous line of dc, then 2 to 3 etc
  8. crochet down the columns
  9. edge

There are several weeks in between steps 2 and 9 Wink

I'd be happy to make squares for a refuge blanket too. That sounds like a fantastic idea.

4x6 squares is 2'x3', and only 24 squares in total. I do a row of 10 in about 30 minutes, so making a blanket that size would take no time at all.

I'll have to see where I'm at when i finish MrsY's but would possibly have time before baby makes his appearance... Unless another woolly hug is needed, of course.

Tbh, anyone could do it in an afternoon. We just need to organise into groups of, say, 4 to make 6 squares each. Maybe by geography so as to avoid postage and do the construction at a meet up cake scoffing excuse

I'm in the North West then but only available for weekend meet ups as I am now back at work full time (booooooooo).

There's a thread somewhere about blanket meet ups, I'll dig it out when I'm less tired

I can see the patterns for last years refuge squares and they were 6inch squares but I can't find anywhere where they say what size this years are. Will they be the same do you think? Can I use some of my tried and tested Woolly Hugs patterns?!
