Turns out last 3 years whilst M&S management have insisted gender neutral ie. Mixed sex facilities are entirely fine they have been aware a teenage girl was raped in the toilets of their Oxford store.

Mumsnet doesn’t like archive links. If you put this link https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/26582305.oxford---man-20-jailed-raping-teenage-girls-public-toilets/ into archive. ph (remove the space) you can read the story.

Those poor girls 😢 sentence is much too short.

A 20-year-old rapist has been jailed in Oxford for attacks on two girls which left one struggling with ‘dark days and panic attacks’.

Awful for those girls. But not sure what you mean about gender neutral when this happened in single sex toilets in their store. Rapists aren't going to be deterred by a sign.

No but if you let anyone in then women can’t complain when they see a man in there and get help. Why make it easier? It’s like saying there’s no point locking your doors because a determined burglar will break the window anyway.

Sorry are you suggesting the other women in this M&S are responsible for not reporting this? What's your evidence for that?

A number of their stores when this happened had mixed sex toilets https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4946264-ms-loos

Just been into a food store in Scotland, about five mixed sex loos with the Male/Female drawing and one Male only loo. I said to an assistant that it...

Where did I say that or anything approaching it? I wasn’t even referring to this case at all but your assertions that rapists will ignore a sign.

What I’m saying is, if you make toilets unisex then women can’t complain about males being in there which is not good for women and girls who use those spaces. It won’t always help because you can’t always call for help, but why remove the few protections that single-sex spaces do offer if you don’t have to?

Where is it stated that the rapes occurred in single-sex toilets?

And even if they did occur in single/sex toilets, I don’t see how allowing males into them is going to help, even if those males identify as women.

The store in question only has single sex toilets.

They may do now, after the attack. In fact I’m sure they do. But do you have evidence that single sex spaces were being enforced in that shop at the time the attacks took place?

Enforced in what way?

Keeptoiletssafe · 04/10/2026 23:53

The court reports show the crimes happened in a facility open to both sexes.

This is awful for the girls affected and they were brave to bring this to court.

It is very difficult to piece together what is happening in toilets. It is lucky we still have local press who can supply information that help with future safeguarding. I have collated a lot of information over several years now.

Single sex toilets are safest.

Perhaps there could be some sort of AI-aided CCTV software monitoring the doors to disabled toilets for more than one person entering/unusual amounts of time spent in them. That may help?

Your solution is to violate the dignity of disabled people? Some require a carer to go into the facility with them. Some disabilities require a significant amount of time in there too.

The pp hit the mark. It's obvious you're using these girls for a cheap gotcha.

How on earth would this violate their dignity?

What's the point of AI cameras monitoring the doors to disabled facilities if not to act upon more than one person entering or spending "too long" in there? Staff members knocking on the door while changing a colostomy bag is hardly dignified for the disabled person is it?

You'll violate anyone's rights except biological males who want to be in women's single sex spaces by claiming to feel like a woman.

The alternative of course being girls being raped. I think you need to reacquaint yourself with reality - I support single sex spaces.

This is an absurd suggestion. Accessible and Disabled toilets are designed so that any required carers can enter to provide assistance, and often disabled people require extended periods of time in the space simply due to the logistics involved in physically using the facilities.

So why only monitor disabled facilities? Why not cameras at all toilets and changing rooms to ensure only one person enters a cubicle and no men at all enter the women's?

Because they were the toilets used in these rapes. Or do you think everyone has to include every possible situation in every post?
