“Started in 2019, Drag Race UK brought British drag into mainstream entertainment in the UK”. I think the Black & White Minstrel Show played a similar role in platforming Black performers in the 1950/ 1970s. And made them mainstream entertainment. Giving a voice to marginalised, and underrepresented cultures. BBC

I absolutely hate it when 'drag queens' are on reality tv, in drag.

I've never understood the appeal of drag. A lot of women seem to really like it, which I don't get at all. I can appreciate some of them are very good at what they do but it's all a
bit distasteful to me.

Hopefully that fashion is fading (yes I know there have always been drag performers, but in recent years it's seemed to be everywhere).

Fabulous news I have never liked men dressing up as women to mock them even back when I was little girl I used to hate the pantomime dame because the best women in my life were my aunts, my nana, my mum and this was men mocking them.

But yes re Drag Race. Whilst recognising the amount of work put in by the performers the actual programme makes me uneasy and uncomfortable but I don't know why

I doubt it's being done because they've seen the light regarding offending women. Brittin seems to be going for more niche programmes that freelance producers/presenters can move to independent online platforms.

Why drag queens are dragged into every other aspect of the entertainment business while wearing their woman face I really don’t understand. Do circus ringmasters wear their red topcoats going down tho the corner shop? Clowns wear clown makeup to the launderette? Ballet dancers whizz round Tescos in tights and tutus? Ventriloquists lean against the bar and ask of a “gottle of gear”?

If Lily Savage could hang up her pleather skirt and donate her wigs to a bird sanctuary for nesting materials and then go on forge a new career then so can the rest of them, if that is they are anything more than a close shave and heavy contouring.

I was never that interested in drag but didn't mind it when it was a man, who knew he was a man was playing a female character. In that case it can be as funny and entertaining as any other comic performer playing a character, if it is not about mocking women. Paul O'Grady fit this bill IMO. It is when it started being all about 'visibility for the alphabet+ community', and the performers being trans as opposed to playing a character along with the vile misogyny that passed as comedy, that it lost my vote.
