Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, and any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

Before i go to bed i have for the third consecutive night cats fighting under my bedroom window. I have tried to go out and douse them with water but the furry buggers fuck off beforehand.

i love cats but not that much.

I love that!

I'm very rules-bound which can means I can be quite rigid, but it is an advantage when explaining why organisations can’t legally do what they are attempting to do. (I tried to be a lawyer but my autism meant I didn’t understand how to answer exam questions and failed. Then someone gave me some techniques, I went back to university and gained a first class degree and an MSc.)

As I’ve got older I know I can bend the rules a bit and I understand that often nobody cares.

I also think my family is autistic and we had quite a strict routine, but some of that was my mum having four children under four.

I don’t know what DG and EC stand for.

Late diagnosed autistic moose here.
I'm in denial about the possibility of auDhd...
I don't believe I am ADHD (no evidence). But like you Myrtle, I recognise many people in my family as being autistic. Both my parents, now dead, definitely autistic.

I don't know what DG and EC stand for, either.

The book sounds amazing, @AnonyMumAuDHD 😎

Maybe you need to keep a supersoaker ready in your bedroom and spray them from your window?

AsWithGlad · Yesterday 02:07

Guessing…

DG - diagnosis/diagnoses
ED - eating disorders

?

That's what I do for the collared doves which try to nest on the Sky dish bracket!

Blinking typos [the g&Ts] - meant GD (gender dysphoria) and EDs (eating disorders) 🤦🏽‍♀️

I think also, as you get older, you have more experience. autistic people are less able to adapt and learn social nuance, but what comes to many people intuitively by the time they are 21, say, takes hundreds more ‘rehearsals’ in an autistic people. By the time a woman is in her 40s or 50s she will have had so much more social exposure, made lots more mistakes, learned that it’s best to try and zip, it rather than be honest because her delivery doesn’t seem to land as well as the ‘cool’ women who chair the PTA. They will have come to terms with being on the outside, fluttering around the edges, because they know they can’t advance to the centre of the gang and come to be resigned - almost grateful - to be allowed to be in that far.

Lots of people who meet me register the ADHD pretty immediately (I can’t STFU) but because they don’t understand how autism presents in women, they don’t ‘see’ that aspect of my ND. Ironically i would day that 95% of my best, closest and longer-term friendships have all turned out to be ND women (or mothers if ND kids but aware that they must be too). It’s as though we recognised each other, even before we knew what all this stuff was and it kept us bonded.

Well, that and shared love of textiles/crafts, dogs/cats and tunnocks of course.

I've just seen gerbil nuns!

(I Blame @MarieDeGournay )

dont get into the habit.

I hope there aren’t gerbil monks - a tonsure really wouldn’t suit them.

ErrolTheDragon · Yesterday 10:12

Anyway good morning all.
BrewBrewBrewBrewBrewBrew Brews up - hot or iced.

Funnily enough, several of my good friends with ND diagnoses swear to me that I must also be ND, because we have so much in common.

Having looked at the assessments my ND children have been through, I'm so allistic I'm practically a caricature.

Magpiecomplex · Yesterday 10:27

Morning all. Iced chocolate for me please.

Love the gerbil nuns, Boily. Is the convent of St Gertrude within the bounds of the Bluestocking, or are they neighbours? There's plenty of precedent for religious orders to produce alcoholic beverages and it would be almost our moral duty to stock the convent's products behind the bar. And partake, of course.

AnonyMumAuDHD · Yesterday 10:41

Anyone fashioning a pinhole camera out of a Kellogg cereal box today?

Apparently it's in the Bluestocking garden by the lilac trees. It wasn't there last night.

Yet @MarieDeGournay mentioned St Gertrude on another thread and seconds later I tripped over a nuns habit as she made her way in to the convent.

Very odd, if we were anywhere other than the Bluestocking that is!

Last chance before 2090 to see a full solar eclipse. Got to be done, surely?

They appear to be in the Benedictine tradition, which would definitely fit with producing alcohol. We just need to watch out for the gerbils' version of a Brother Cadfael.

For heaven's sake keep that quiet of we'll have Gillian getting ideas.

I'm still not over the spiced nuts debacle, and the exercise classes nearly finished me off.

I'm off to check the Bluey's library and make sure those books are well hidden!

Today I have pegged out a load of washing, cleared the counters, watered the poky tunnel, fed the neighbours' cat, washed, chopped and wilted the spinach for tomorrow's spanakopita and made the muhamarra.
Second loads of washing waiting for line space but my knees have had Quite Enough.

An iced coffee and one of those calorie free Bluestocking treats, please. Perhaps a pistachio magnum?

I was wondering, as we now have nuns, whether Gubbins might like to go and play her triangle for them?

How industrious!
I've never heard of muhammara before. Have googled. Looks delicious Grin

Oh yes, I'm sure she would. Especially if it's that or helping me with the laundry again.

I once went on a silent retreat at Douai Abbey, which is a Benedictine abbey, if I remember correctly. I was the only person on retreat for those few days, and the monks were lovely to me - I ate with them in the refectory, and sat with them in the choir during the services. It was such a peaceful experience - especially as the mum of three young boys.

And on a more earthly note, Cadfael is an absolute favourite of mine - I’ve got all the books and reread them very happily, from time to time. There used to be a Cadfael experience in Shrewsbury, and we took the boys there once - it was fascinating.
