Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, and any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

A fortnight ago, if there’s the slightest breeze here, drifts of brown dry leaves are blown from some of the trees.
Not right for early August, nor now.

It's a self-preservation response that happens whenever there's a shortage of water - a tree cuts off a percentage of leaves rather than the whole tree struggle. In the heat wave of 2022 the trees around here did it in July.

It's a different trigger to dropping leaves for autumn, which is about light levels and temperatures, if I remember from school correctly.

👻

I've had a few days off Mumsnet due to a hayfever-induced sinus infection, which gave me face and head pain, toothache and a sore foot (from stubbing my toe when sneezing!) I've finally managed to clear my nasal passages (you really don't want to know the details) and can look at a screen again with out wincing.

Just came back to the Bluestocking to find that we are almost ready to move again. It may take me a while to catch up, but could someone leave a trail for me please........

EmpressaurusKitty · 20/08/2026 17:22

I’ll be getting the craft room packed up. Can anyone give me a hand? I want to make sure everything’s protected from the rain on the journey - though I’m not sure if it’s going by camel or by tractor.

Are the camels all back, recovered and ready to work?
They probably need to be protected from rain, too. They are not used to it - unless the wonder that is the Bluestocking has trained them to cope?

There are plenty of tarpaulins to keep everything on the tractors and trailers safe and dry.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/08/2026 18:07

We’ve had quite a lot more rain too. I’ve been out today to get some violas to replace the frazzled lobelias in my tubs with, and a small hanging basket as the one I had didn’t survive us going away in hot spells.

Magpiecomplex · 20/08/2026 18:17

Gemini has created a lovely picture of a camel with a large awning type umbrella arrangement attached to herself, but MN won't let me attach it. So you'll have to imagine it.

How unfair of MN. Is it too big?

No, only 2 MB. I don't get an error message, it just won't do anything. Trying a different way...

ETA that worked with a screenshot. Phew.

EmpressaurusKitty · 20/08/2026 18:24

Perfect, now we just need to load them up.

Magpiecomplex · 20/08/2026 18:29

I must admit I would prefer to travel by tractor, especially if it's that rainy!

EmpressaurusKitty · 20/08/2026 18:32

If the camels carry all the luggage, there’s plenty of room for us all on the tractors.

Does someone need to tell our secret agents where we’ve gone?

Magpiecomplex · 20/08/2026 18:34

@AnonyMumAuDHD I bought those boots. They arrived today! Haven't tried them on yet because that will involve socks, and my feet don't want to be wearing socks. Got four bites on one foot, which isn't fun.

MyrtleLion · 20/08/2026 18:43

I’ve had a hugely busy day and I’m at an event this evening. Gosie will be delayed until at least 9pm but will be posted before midnight, I promise.

EmpressaurusKitty · 20/08/2026 18:45

Have a good time & we’ll see you on the new thread, @MyrtleLion!

RumNotRun · 20/08/2026 18:46

I love those Joe Brown boots! They're the kind of things I used to buy then never wear. I had a fab collection of heels at one point that were all so pretty but I'd bought them online from the states and they didn't always fit. It took me about 6 years to finally accept that I would never wear them so I needed to sell them. I think I still have a pair of two upstairs that I couldn't bring myself to part with.

Magpiecomplex · 20/08/2026 18:47

I'm in a foul mood. Been running around like a blue arsed fly all day, no time for lunch. Got home and Mr Magpie agreed to go out to get something for dinner. 45 minutes later, he finally left the house after I told him I wasn't waiting any longer because I was very hungry.

AngleofRepose · 20/08/2026 18:48

I'm here, ready to help carry! I'd like to hitch a ride on one of the tractors, please. No camel rides for me!

I'll take some of the usual crafty stuff, and my Atlas and will meet you over there. 😊

EmpressaurusKitty · 20/08/2026 18:54

I’ll lock up & wait a minute in case anyone else needs directing.

Thank you, that will be our undercover gerbils. I don’t think we have any way to contact them while they are at work.

It might be a Good Thing if Fenella doesn’t have their address once her dastardliness is made public.

Kitty’s started going over there every day to climb the poplars & watch them through the skylight. She can easily be lurking there at home time & lead them to the new address.

DauntlessDamson · 20/08/2026 19:11

Ooh, just in time to cadge a lift on one of the tractors. See you soon......

Ooh how lovely - the bites will heel and you can can lovingly gaze at them in the interim 🥰
