Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

How trans people feel about correct-sex toilets, in their own words

MyAmpleSheep · Yesterday 14:07

This is an interesting Reddit thread where members of the trans community write about how they feel about not using wrong-sex bathrooms toilets facilities. (The original question doesn’t say toilets, but that’s how most responders have interpreted it, I think).

https://tinyurl.com/musmm897

There’s a mix of responses, some activist, some self-pitying, some stories that are sad. Genuinely useful and thought-provoking to read what people say.

I can’t very much influence how people should post here, but it would be very easy to only to highlight or mock the more unreasonable responses in that thread. Perhaps I’m allowed to ask Mumsnet posters to be thoughtful, though?

if you harass trans people in toilets I will happily call the police as a cis woman.

Where did I say I'd do that? Oh yes, I didn't. I'd leave and report them to the management of the place.

murasaki · Today 16:02

Amd I might say ' this is the ladies' before leaving. Hardly harassment.

slug · Today 16:04

If there's one thing that shows the poster is male, it's thinking that women will routinely approach an aggresive male in the loos. 🙄

Sounds like you’re going by a lot of pseudo science and a lot of misinformation. You could do with actually reading the law and educating yourself on the subjects.

As has been said by many, many women during this bizarre period of history, we were told to 'educate yourselves' by TRA's.

So we did.

Which is why we're not up for allowing men to use women's resources and spaces on the basis of their special 'lady feelings'.

FWR must be one of the best informed places on the planet on these issues. You can stamp and scream as much as you want. Reality is winning.

FlirtsWithRhinos · Today 16:04

Half the human race is female.

As an agender person of female body, I share neither my sex nor my gender with trans "women".

I think it's fucking disgraceful that supposedly "progressive" people seem to think it's reasonable to undefine people of female of body in law and language, replace that with some undefined handwavy idea of "inner gender" that takes the same name, tell us that the handway gender is is who we really are and our bodies have nothing ti do with it, and then use that as a fig leaf over a land grab of female-only provisions, rights and protections.

It's literally no different to the colonists who sailed into a foreign country, decided their definitions and their ideas of ownership were more legitimate than those of the people already there, and basically said "we wrote laws that made us in charge, you don't have any rights to anything, now fuck off and do as you are told".

The only ignorance being displayed by those who identify as feminists but are actually transphobes such as those replying to my posts. You may identity as a feminist but you will NEVER be a feminist. Please do try to learn the definition of feminism before you appropriate it.
Sadly it seems like the echo chamber of Mumsnet has created a lot of mental illness.
Sad.

Exactly. Unfortunately for you, your words fall under that description and you’re looking pretty aggressive threatening women wanting to use female only spaces free of men.

if any feminist identifying transphobe starts harassing her I will good her a good what for as they aren’t breaking any laws.

Escorting men into women’s spaces isn’t going to help them as it might just mean that both of you are thrown out for forcing a business into unlawful behaviour by not enforcing single sex rules.

Telling a man to leave a female only space is not harassment btw. I will go exactly that if I judge it to be safe and if he looks too creepy or has an aggressive female with him I would just go straight to the management and explain their legal obligations to remove him.

Why are you so invested in escorting men into the women's bogs? It sounds a bit strange, to put it mildly.

slug · Today 16:08

Oh! Oh! Oh! I know 🙋

Is this the one where you say you're an "intersectional" feminist. Where everything must intersect with a penis to be valid?

It sounds like you’re having trouble reading the law. So I’ll be so kind as to produce it again.

Under the Public Order Act 1986, using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behavior that causes harassment, alarm, or distress is an offense.

So would you like to harass trans women (no such words as men who identify as women) or would you like to obey the law? It’s really that simple.

Nobody is harassing anyone. If a woman finds a man in the female lavatory, she leaves, and asks a manager or their delegate to intervene.

Once the man has been ejected, she can use the facility in peace.

Simples.

The question is, are you going to make a nuisance of yourself?

My definition of feminism doesn't include delusional men. Or any men.

There is no such word as “men who identify as women” really. Think the Supreme Court might disagree. They are legally men with the protected characteristic of gender reassignment - can call them that if you prefer? How about GR Men, or GI Men? Do those work?

So I'll never be your type of feminist? Big deal. I've been called a nazi and a facist. Being called "not a feminist" by people who put men first, is peanuts by comparison.

And you still don't understand UK law at all.

Unfortunately for you the reality is that despite identifying as a feminist you aren’t one and even if you were by some warped logic you’d only be a minority of say 0.1%. The universally recognised feminist definition is nothing in which transphobes actually are.

Try again, in coherent English this time please.

WrongKindOfFeminist · Today 16:13

The definition of 'feminist' matters not one whit to anything.

What matters is the definition, in law, of 'woman'. Which has been established.

Indeed. They've yet to grasp that insults no longer work.

Anyway, I'll try again, why are you so keen to escort men into the women's toilets? I'm genuinely interested in your motivation here.

But you think that the people who prioritise men are the 'true feminists'

Which is a totally ludicrous position - as even you will recognise.

What sex you are is immaterial, though.

What matters is the sex of the person accessing a single sex service.
