Men: turn left at the end of the road, keep walking until you find the Staunch Ally.

Bar gerbil a full fat coke please and a packet of Scampi Fries please.

Welcome to the Bluestocking women's pub. Men are directed to the Staunch Ally just down the road. Otherwise all are welcome. Pull up a chair, give you...

I had a meeting down South (England, not the South of Scotland) two weeks ago and one of my French colleagues who was there for it discovered pasties during that visit. She asked for a recipe and since I've never made a pasty in my life I thought I try it out first. I had to google what swedes/neepes are called in French and they are of course rutabaga.

I didn't know 'rutabaga', but then again the French only feed them to cows!
In Ireland 'a turnip' is a Swede ['Swade'], or a 'white turnip'.
We only ever ate Swedes when I was little - I loved them, must start eating them again..

The French word for a [white] turnip is 'un navet', which is also French for a lemon😄
... as in something that it is very bad -
'Il était comment, le film? Un vrai navet!'

Is it <worried look around the growing crowd of Stockingers> a very big cake, Igneo?Grin

My dad used to cook that rabbit in cider. There was one butcher in Limerick that stocked them. It may actually have been a fishmonger, which sort of makes sense, since they'd have been accustomed to small-scale trade with fishermen or rabbit-trappers. Probably impossible to manage the paperwork on that sort of thing these days.

We call them Erdkohlrabi in Lower Frankonia, not sure about the rest of Germany. When my Mum got married and moved to my Dad's village just ~60 km up the river nobody there ate them. My aunt somewhat sneeringly referred to them as Viehfutter (they did get on really well but my Mum never quite forgot this one). We had them a few times every winter with brined pork knuckles and eventually even my aunt came round to them.

I'd love to give it a try but I very much doubt I can get it here. The author of the article managed to find it but I assume she is in London.

You need to ask in advance, but our local butcher (Yorkshire) can get rabbit in without too much bother.

We needed it when we did There And Snack Again. That's an all day eat-along with the Lord Of The Rings trilogy - when they eat, you eat. And there's a 'brace of coneys' dish in it.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/04/2026 19:27

There’s a fishmonger in a town near here which also sells game. I’ve seen hares hanging up but I’m not sure about rabbits.

MyrtleLion · 06/04/2026 19:31

I last had rabbit from Tooting market about 10 12 years ago and it was very expensive. I assume because it's so rare... 🤣

MyrtleLion · 06/04/2026 19:31

I'll get my coat.

Magpiecomplex · 06/04/2026 19:43

Well, I think I've got this job application ready to go. It's taken most of the afternoon.

Hot chocolate bowser please, bar gerbil.

EmpressaurusKitty · 06/04/2026 19:49

Good luck Myrtle!

After Dr Bessie’s massage I’ve spent most of the day resting my leg & working on my blanket. Stripes up & then another row of cats near the top.

This one?

There used to be a wonderful little video on YT of all the best Gollum moments, with the odd caption. It was hilarious, but I can't find it any more.

Empress, those cats are vv cool.

DeanElderberry · 06/04/2026 19:51

I took the bin out, and paused to see could I spot the robin that was singing in the cherry tree, and a swallow flew over!

Welcome back, little bird.

Magpiecomplex · 06/04/2026 20:02

I'm told there's a farmers market in Faversham where one can buy squirrel meat. I've never tried it myself but my source claims it's quite acceptable.

I’m planning to have lots of fun with that cat pattern once I’ve finished this blanket! Stripey ones on a blanket for Kitty, maybe.

MyrtleLion · 06/04/2026 20:12

It's been such a lovely day and a wonderful drive through England's countryside, that Gosie has taken the scenic route back to the Bluestocking.

She stopped in a seaside town where she had fish and chips for lunch, then decided on Afternoon Tea at a stately home. She's just finished her dinner in a traditional English pub, and has finally pulled up at a cute Bed and Breakfast to stay the night.

I think she's enjoying being a customer before her return to the Bluestocking tomorrow in the late afternoon (because I'm really busy tomorrow morning).

Four changes of clothes in one day? What a little poser!

She's been taking fashion advice from Maud.

Empress I absolutely love those cats.

<elbows way through the crowds with prickles up>

well what happened its very busy in here, glad to see it.

Been in my own garden sowing seeds.

Back at work tomorrow gardening lost my enthusiasm i think, maybe it will come back.

Hedgehogforshort · 06/04/2026 20:47

Forgot to order pint of gin please

EmpressaurusKitty · 06/04/2026 20:53

What are you growing, @Hedgehogforshort?

Hedgehogforshort · 06/04/2026 21:10

EmpressaurusKitty · 06/04/2026 20:53

What are you growing, @Hedgehogforshort?

3 varieties of lettuce, beetroot, carrots, onions, garlic, Chard, radishes, peas, all in now.

Runner and french beans courgettes in later.

I also have a perennial fruit bed, raspberries, strawberries, rhubarb, and fennel oh and a welsh onion.

potatoes and herbs to go in tubs tomorrow.

Tomatoes and cucumbers for the greenhouse tomorrow, after tender pots go back out.

some cosmos and zinnia to plant out in gaps in beds later on.

Got some new plate sized dahlias for some pots as i just love them.

Thats my plan this year.

gave up on leeks and corn as no success there. Cannot be doing with brassicas as to much like hard work and don't like netting stuff as we have lots of birds.

might bung in some shallots but birds nick them.

NotAtMyAge · 06/04/2026 21:12

My copy of that is a hardback reprint bought in a remainder shop in the 90s.
