Why do leisure centres no longer provide single-sex changing rooms? Women’s Rights Network on the case…

GreenEyedFeminist · 31/03/2026 08:27

What is it with leisure centres? Why can’t they give us single-sex changing rooms? This WRN X thread lists some of the cases from this year - I bet there are more. I get why families want to share a changing rooms but surely they could design changing rooms that give women and children a bit of privacy and SAFETY as well as a few cubicles for families. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jailed for 2 years, suspended, and 10 years on the sex offenders' register. Absolutely dire.

You mean the no longer quite so silent but ever growing majority that shows up in every survey about single sex spaces.
You seem to have a picarious grip on reality @AidaP may I suggest that you look at the actual facts around this subject before you make an even bigger fool of yourself

And then we look into the real world, away from billionare owned newspapers and question/group skewed pools and get fascinating topics like: Is this massively inappropriate or should I just accept that this is where I work...? | Mumsnet

It warms my heart, continuing to show that transphobes have to keep hiding because... Yeah, the law does not protect you the way you think it does, and you know it - which is why you won't actually put your job on the line.

Happy transgender day of visibility 😍We are here, way in the open, enjoying life, while you keep skulking in your dreams of "majority"

Is this massively inappropriate or should I just accept that this is where I work...? | Mumsnet

This morning I have opened up my company Teams platform to a message wishing all staff a happy Trans Visibility Day. And a photo of three beer cans fr...

So now YouGov are dismissed . Strange isn’t it that people who claim the majority hasn’t eventuated has in effect silenced them as being ‘the wrong type voices’ or ‘the voices that have spoken to the wrong type of agency.’

It's just horrible.
Well done that brave girl for reporting him.
Why make it easier for these men?

Plymouth Crown Court heard how Benjamin Lilly recorded girls aged between 12 and 15 while working at Plymouth Life Centre.
Lilly, of Chaucer Way, Plymouth, admitted seven charges of voyeurism as well as counts of attempting to cause a child to engage in sexual activity, making moving images and category C child sex images.

Exactly, and it's very easy to do that with the set up they have. It's a complete bunfight for changing rooms during after school swimming lessons, despite the amount of changing rooms.

Wearenotborg · 31/03/2026 13:30

But @AidaP I thought males with a trans identity were unsafe in male spaces. Why would they be safer in mixed sex spaces when the very males they are afraid of would also be in that space? Why would the presence of women make that space safer?

Pingponghavoc · 31/03/2026 13:37

I don't see how its cheaper to have one large mix sex changing area, rather than male, female and family?

Council know that mix sex is more dangerous for women and girls and more 'incidents' are going to happen.

How can the initial set up costs of smaller rooms with doors and signs be a cost factor given the ongoing cost of pools and leisure centres, plus the cost of having to report said incidents and help with police investigations?

GreenEyedFeminist · 31/03/2026 13:40

That seems a good layout - something for everyone. Are you able to tell us which swimming pool that is?

Lawsuit is the answer. Incidents that happen carry no civic responsibility, and the only way to now not get sued is to go fully unisex for NON EMPLOYEES. Employees, it gets a bit more complicated.

And every developer in the world would rather just pay a bit more extra to make the unisex spaces, than to deal with unknown amount of lawsuits later, easy way to derisk.

And I also to a point agree with you that this makes everyone less safe from men but hey, you guys keep cheering when laws that remove the safer way gets enacted because you are so focused on transgender people that you forget about the actual danger, which is cis het men responsible for almost all of those crimes.

Not like no one warned about it or anything, but blind bigotry does not care. Now watch further protections get eroded, all in the name of transphobia.

So @AidaP what is the difference between a man without a trans identity and one with a trans identity that makes one safer to be in female spaces? They are both male right, so why does one get to access female spaces and one not? Surely the fact that males with a trans identity want mixed sex spaces shows that they are not afraid of being in spaces with males.

Neither is this accurate, you are just being intentionally transphobic to refuse to see a point.

And that's why women in sports face more and more harassment, abuse, and your former cheerleader of Falkner now leads the charge against abortion rights, because being transphobic is more important to you than actual rights of women.

Errrr are you ok hen? Do you need a lie down? What is transphobic about saying males with a trans identity are male? Surely campaigning for single sex spaces as accorded by UK law is championing the rights of women? Now if I was campaigning to allow men into female spaces, I’d be fighting against the rights of women. You seem a little het up sweetie. Maybe a nice calming cup of tea might help.

Needspaceforlego · 31/03/2026 13:55

The only reason it would be cheaper would be for cleaning and supervision purposes.

Its probably easier for school groups too. If they are all in the one area in individual cubicles. I'm thinking primary school rather than secondary.

ProfPerformativeBewildermentOBE · 31/03/2026 13:58

Have you come across the snakes analogy AidaP?

Basically it goes like this: you have to go into a space that’s full of snakes. You have no idea which snakes are venomous and which ones are safe.

Is the best way to prevent getting bitten:

a) have a big open space for everyone to be together with the snakes?
b) give the snakes their own space that is separate from you?

Just in case the analogy isn’t crystal clear, all we see are snakes - we don’t know which men are safe. “Good men stay out so bad men stand out” doesn’t work in unisex spaces.

Take your cis het chat and keep walking.

RareGoalsVerge · 31/03/2026 13:58

I would rather be in a massive area of cubicles that are unisex and busy with lots of people than in an allegedly single sex women's space that some men feel entitled to enter. If a voyuer wants to try and spy on a vulnerable woman he's not going to do so where the beefy guys who spend hours pumping iron in the gym can see exactly what he is doing. Yes I would rather have an actual all-female space but failing that a changing village is ok.

Why? Why would the presence of other men stop someone spying on a woman? Are you assuming all these “beefy guys” will somehow stop them? What if the beefy guys also like spying on women?

Apparently everything is transphobic, especially acknowledging that sex is a material reality. Men like our ploppers want to gaslight everyone to believe water is dry and the earth is flat.

I love how you keep thinking that anyone cares to win you over :D. The unearned ego is akin to the ever famous "silent majority" that never materialized

So if your object isn't to win anyone over with your cogent and hard-hitting (and factual) arguments, what on God's green earth are you doing here? What are you even trying to do by being here?

Don't you have any paint that needs watching to make sure it dries in a trans-approved manner?

It's like a trip to the zoo to watch what are the cookie residents doing. And then post the best bits on bsky, it's fun!

Nooo paint is transphobic. The binary of painted/unpainted and wet/dry is very triggering to trans folx. A more suitable occupation might be going for a nice long walk in nature. If you ignore all the transphobic plants and animals it can be very refreshing.

Awww bless. That’s er… a sad admission right there. I actually feel really sorry for you. The fact that you think posting on a forum where strangers are laughing you is fun says a lot about your life. I know life can be very lonely for a lot of men, have you tried joining Andy’s men shed? They’re really a good network for those suffering from loneliness and isolation, and it might boost your self esteem so that you can connect with people in real life, who will value you for who you are.

Like all abusers of women and their rights.

Keeptoiletssafe
Did I hear toilet talk?!

It's a dog whistle to you, isn't it KTS? and not a nebulous one!

Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, you suddenly get a feeling, and instinct, a funny feeling that you can't explain, your ears and nose twitch [sorry, I seem to be visualising you as a gerbil or something!], you raise your face to the direction of the toilet talk - and then, in an instant - is it a bird? is it a plane? No, its Keeptoiletssafe coming to give us the benefit of her amazing store of knowledge😁

[I hope that's a superhero cape, and not toilet roll😄]

Andy's men shed will be full of...men.
Men like the ones TW are too scared to go into a men's toilet with.
Andy's men shed will therefore be far too dangerous and also will not provide the required level of validation.

There are a fair few non-mammalian species in nature that are able to change sex given appropriate environmental stimuli. Almost all are fish, so if you are wandering about wanting to observe them in their habitat, snorkling gear might be a good idea
