Disappointed at Andrew Garfield remarks about JKR

In recent press for the Magic Faraway Tree, Andrew Garfield was trying to make the point that people who worked on HP projects should be respected for their art. He refused to use JKR name, and called her "she should remain nameless".

This for some reason has hit me a bit harder than I thought it would, and I am confused as to why. His PR is very rainbow-adjacent i.e. does Drag-race. He has always has picked "sensitive-man roles" that appeal to men rather than women. So even if he isn't actully gay-gay, he obviously much prefers the company of men- even when they are dressed as women. So there really is no reason for me to think that he actually cares about women and their safety and dignity at all.

Maybe because we are the same-ish age and similar cultural backgrounds that I thought he would have seen through all the misogynist bullshit. I think its fine to say you disagree with JKR but to demonise her to the same level as Voldemort... seems a bit.. culty?

I was disappointed in him too. I think it's partly because he looks like Andy Murray and Andy's mum, Judy, is amazing.

waltzingparrot · 28/03/2026 22:49

Yes, disappointed too.

He comes across in interviews as very intelligent and articulate so I'm assuming these are his own genuine thoughts rather than naively trotting out the PRs line.

So it’s good to work on a popular franchise, as long as you disrespect its creator and make sure to insult her? What an idiot.

SirChenjins · 28/03/2026 22:51

Another man showing his utter contempt for women - his mask has slipped. Very disappointing.

Exactly.

IfWhippetsRuledTheWorld · 28/03/2026 22:52

I always thought he seemed sensible and nice. Another man who doesn't give a fig about women. How disappointing.

Edinburghdaze · 28/03/2026 22:55

I think men like him, rather than bring worried about what the trans activists think about him and appealing to them, should realise that they alienate women. That we then are against them and their views. Why are they not concerned about that. Do they really not care about women’s opinions? Fuck him.

Zapx · 28/03/2026 22:58

It’s just so predictable! Random actor does interview, Harry Potter comes up (because it’s so so successful and amazing 🤩), and they immediately dive into talking random nonsense that they’ve not thought about one iota and clearly can’t be bothered to find out about and understand properly either. Argh.

zehrkyBerlun · 28/03/2026 23:05

Yes - and John Lithgow too. Thought Lithgow was one of the good ones but no.

Screamingabdabz · 28/03/2026 23:17

Just another woman hating cunt.

And how does someone like him even get cast in films? He looks like a reject from a low rent Barry Manilow look-alike competition. Grow up and educate yourself mate.

I also get him confused with Andy Murray... ha ha

I think this as well. I did hold him up as a paragon of virture- he is a hollywood actor, I just thought he was being mature enough to stay out of it. I also though he would make an amazing Lupin.

I also wonder if it is because the Michael Jackson film is coming out, and Hollywood is frothing to justify their thoughts about JKR but noone is talking about MJ and how this is completely wrong.

I didn't hold him up as a paragon of virtue... sorry can't edit.

Where a rainbow badge/lanyard (tick)
Talk about being the "real you" (tick)
Insult -not disagree- JK Rowling (tick)

I ended up in a cinema, on my own, watching Hamnet a few weeks ago and that trailer for the MJ film just completely threw me. I wanted to shout out "whose fucking stupid idea was this?"

Who is the audience for a hagiography about a paediophile?
Oh...

Its so hard to have a conversation about it. I don't care if you listen to his music because it is good and probably has good memories for you, but I am annoyed when people say that "he didn't abuse though kids" as justification. I watch and enjoy Tom Cruise movies so I can't judge.

I always ask them if they would have let their 8 year old sleep in the same bed as him.

So yeah, I am a little annoyed that men in the public eye freely and openly dump on a woman for saying no, but don;t have ANYTHING to say about a child abuser.

Incredibly immature and unnecessary response. Rather ironice that you are saying he should "grow up". His appearance is irrelevant (though many find him attractive). When you resort to insulting somebody's appearance, you've effectively lost the argument, and it only reflects negatively on you.

In any case, Garfield is an actor, not a model. He gets regular work because he is generally considered a very good actor.

I could say plenty of nasty things about the appearance of say, Posie Parker, or Julie Bindel, or even JKR these days, but I wouldn't, even if I did not agree with them.

Sadly, a lot of women on this board really show themselves up whenever anyone criticises JKR.

RedToothBrush · 29/03/2026 02:27

Being able to speak well and use big words is often mistaken as a sign of intelligence.

It's not.

OttersOnAPlane · 29/03/2026 02:51

I was saddened because I think he's a remarkable actor and a thoughtful man. He's extremely talented and nuanced.
Such a shame he can't consider what Rowling's advocacy means to women.

but so many women agree with the trans (gender identity) stuff, perhaps even more than men do. -_- i've definitely heard it said for instance, in interviews (like with Jamie Reed who used to actually work with these issues before becoming a whistleblower) that it was the mothers who were more for their children becoming trans, and the fathers questioned more.

Having thought about it a bit more, I don't think he cares about what women think about him. He is in an industry with disproportinately amount of men both gay/misoginistic in positions of power so he is aligninghimself with the paymasters I guess. I also don't think he has a sisters/nieces/daughters so he lives in a very masculine world.

I agree that in female dominated roles (education/HR) there seems to be a lot of women that are supportive of children transistion.

His ex girlfriend Dr. Kate Tomas used to be married to a trans or non binary person. She also identifies as queer. I find this genuinely confusing, years ago queer meant gay.

So his stand on JKR is not surprising, although very disappointing.

JustTalkToThem · 29/03/2026 04:28

”even if he isn't actully gay-gay”

This is a bonkers statement and just makes me doubt the sincerity of your whole post.

It makes sense knowing this. Incredibly disappointing nonetheless.
