Disappointed at Andrew Garfield remarks about JKR

In recent press for the Magic Faraway Tree, Andrew Garfield was trying to make the point that people who worked on HP projects should be respected for their art. He refused to use JKR name, and called her "she should remain nameless".

This for some reason has hit me a bit harder than I thought it would, and I am confused as to why. His PR is very rainbow-adjacent i.e. does Drag-race. He has always has picked "sensitive-man roles" that appeal to men rather than women. So even if he isn't actully gay-gay, he obviously much prefers the company of men- even when they are dressed as women. So there really is no reason for me to think that he actually cares about women and their safety and dignity at all.

Maybe because we are the same-ish age and similar cultural backgrounds that I thought he would have seen through all the misogynist bullshit. I think its fine to say you disagree with JKR but to demonise her to the same level as Voldemort... seems a bit.. culty?

I'm never disappointed by celebrities because I couldn't care less what they think. He's just an actor.

AnotherDogWontHurt · 31/03/2026 05:22

He is just another disappointing man. I would have loved to have watched the Magic Faraway Tree but between him and Nicola Coughlan, I can’t bring myself to pay money to watch it. They make me sick.

A) There hasn't been sex testing in the Olympics since the 1990s

I didn't say there was, I said she passed every test required to compete at the Olympics.

B) Both tests were done in independent labs. Absolutely no reason to dismiss them.

There are no test results to dismiss. The IBA wouldn't even say what kind of test was administered. The IBA are a corrupt, incompetent joke, if they told me the sky was blue I'd look outside to check.

They banned a second boxer at the same time as Khelif, for failing the exact same tests. Since confirmed to be female.

Khelif has not entered a single competition since where sex testing was required

She's not entered any competitions full stop. She's currently challenging the testing requirements in court. Her next competition is the Olympics and she's confirmed that she'll take any test required to compete.

C) Khelif could have taken and published an independent test at any time to shut all this down, yet he didn't. I wonder why?

Why should she?

You're way behind. The tests were released. He failed them.

Even his own trainer admits it. They ALL KNEW!

Interview with trainer makes clear: new Olympic champion in women's boxing, is biologically male. The trainer talks about a non-female karyotype, a chromosomal problem & a testosterone problem that they kept (medically) contained.

*leaked lab tests confirming 5ARD seen by independent journalists

No. A French media outlet claims to have a copy of a report compiled based on test results, physical examinations etc. Nothing in that report is backed by evidence. There are no 'leaked lab tests'. The IBA haven't released them, leaked them, or even confirmed what the tests actually were.

If independent journalist had access to the actual test results, we'd know about it.

*Khelif refusing to undergo sex testing by the new boxing federation

She is contesting the type of test and the process - assessing anyone who tests positive for the SRY gene as male, then making them appeal.

She has been clear that she will test before the Olympics. She took the IBA tests.

*Khelif asking CAS if they can continue to box without sex testing pending results - CAS thankfully declined

I agree that she shouldn't compete until she's tested, but I understand her request.

*Khelif wearing a male-specific groin guard while boxing (not the differently shaped female guard)

You're repeating internet nonsense. It's nigh-on impossible to tell what type of box someone is wearing under a pair of boxing shorts. Plenty of women wear male guards because they find them more comfortable. I had to spend a lot of money to find a women's guard that didn't irritate me, and it's bulkier than most men's cups. I've yet to see any evidence of her wearing a men's cup.

*Khelif, the self-proclaimed devout Muslim, being manhandled by men and lifted onto the shoulders of male coaches (their religion prohibits unrelated men touching women)

She doesn't wear a hijab to compete either. If she was that devout, she wouldn't have male coaches/training partners at all. I know she's described her parents as 'conservative Muslims', but I'm not aware of her claiming to be devout.

*Photos of Khelif pre-Olympics wearing male-style training gear and looking very different to the post-match feminised photos - the relevance being this was in a conservative Muslim country

What's 'male style' training gear? Why would someone trying to hide the fact that they're a man wear it?

And of course, more subjectively, we have the evidence from the women Khelif boxed against who seem to have never complained about losing to other women but have described the much greater and disproportionate power that Khelif has.

Who has described this? The only opponent I'm aware of making such a claim was the Italian who's head fell off.

Sixty amateur fights, never knocked an opponent out. Only 8 fights finished within the distance. You don't need to know anything about boxing to watch her fight and understand that she's not a big hitter and doesn't have 'disproportionate power'. She's a point fighter.

Grifters going to grift. And men will continue to be violent to women. Such as it ever was. Khelif ticks both boxes.

Khelif was assigned female at birth, was brought up female, competed in female sports alongside other girls and started boxing as a female. She has never lived as a man. Framing this as a case of a man wanting to be violent to women is ridiculous. And trust me, anyone taking up women's boxing as a grift really doesn't need to be hit in the head anymore.

I find it really strange how some people seem really determined to believe that Khelif is female. The only reason I can think of is that they defended Khelif vigorously when the controversy first appeared and don’t feel able to row back from their position.

Is it any stranger than some people being desperate for her not to be? Remember, People were having the exact same arguments about Lin Yu-ting, the other boxer banned by the IBA.

She failed the new test as she carries the SRY gene, but had it overturned on appeal and has been cleared to compete as a woman.

I'm not desperate for Khelif to be a woman. I'm just not willing to make my mind up and start insulting, attacking and casting aspersions on someone based on misinformation, conjecture and nonsense I've read on the internet.

If she can't meet the eligibility criteria to compete then I'll support World Boxing excluding her. If she can, I'll be happy that she's been vindicated.

I am a former combat sports athlete - I know how difficult it is for women to be taken seriously and succeed. I'm not going to pile on somebody until there's a reason to.

She failed the new test as she carries the SRY gene, but had it overturned on appeal and has been cleared to compete as a woman.

What that means is he failed the sex test but they accept his gender identity, and ignored his sex.

As for Khelif, we all known damn well he won't take the test again. He FLED last year instead of taking the test for Eindhoven Boxing Cup. When told he need to undergo sex testing to compete in the Einhoven Boxing Cup last year, he FLED!! He fucking pissed off, he FLED THE EVENT, hightailed it right out of there. rather than do the testing. ACTIONS, not 'words'. Why would he flee? WHY?

He will quietly retire in 2028 just prior to the Olympics. We all know it. Boxer Imane Khelif skips event after mandatory sex-testing rule - ESPN

The 'test' to compete in the Olympics was an F on his passport.

Olympic athletes undergo all manner of testing, including for T/E levels. These are random, year round.

This is following two failed sex eligibility tests

This was a claim made by the IBA that has never been substantiated. No data or criteria were ever published. The IBA is a disgraced Russian organization that was subsequently stripped of IOC recognition. If you know anything about boxing you'll know why.

Yet the sympathy for the man who knowing went into a ring and beat up women continues

I feel bad for Khelif like I'd feel bad for anyone forced to have a deeply personal medical issue play out in public.

But if there are concerns then it's quite right that they're addressed openly. I don't have sympathy for that her in that regard.

And if it's established that she wasn't eligible, of course I'll have sympathy for the other boxers. I'm just waiting for the facts.

And if it's established that she wasn't eligible, of course I'll have sympathy for the other boxers. I'm just waiting for the facts.

It's already been established he wasn't eligible. We have the facts. He failed the test (including one he himself commissioned) not once, not twice, but three (3) times. And testing was by CAS laboratories (which are overseen by the IOC themselves) in India and in France. So what's the next conspiracy theory. Russian = corrupt/bad. What about India? What about France? When will you just admit these tests are valid and he failed them three times. Why do you give benefit of the doubt to the men, and not the feminists? Is it really that important to you pride-wise to not be seen to have been wrong? He has been proven male on three (3) separate occasions. Even his own trainers admit it. Even Khelif himself admitted he has male chromosomes.

What more do you need? It looks foolish clinging to this when you know the jig was up ages ago. He has been proven male more than 3 times over. It's not even in question anymore. Even you know this deep down. Is it really this important to not let feminists win?

What on earth. That is bizarre. Even if there's context for him to be talking about the children growing up, it seems so creepily weird.

Not sure. I read that he is a bit of an idealist and isn’t ready for the kids to grow up- maybe because it reminds him that he is in fact a grown man in his 40s.

I wonder if he has a part on the new HP series and is getting his excuses early?

i just watched this, the guy has definitely wandered into territory that he hasn’t truly thought through, as is the way with Professors, but I appreciate that he does speak about it in a calm and analytical matter

Yes , I imagine Professor Wilson is a lovely man and you could imagine having a pint and listening to his eloquent disquisitions.Or maybe a drop of claret in his case? My problem was his starting premise here. A beloved author has made a mistake, got things all wrong and upset trans people. Now what can we do to make everyone be nice again and avoid all this unpleasantness?

Falls at the first hurdle .

GlomOfNit · 31/03/2026 09:58

Doesn't remotely surprise me. First of all, he's male, so none of this is going to impact on his life, is it? But I think he knows where a lot of his fan base live, too.

He's starring in an adaptation of an Enid Blyton book so I think if he's casting aspersions on authors he believes should be cancelled, he should check first to see if he's throwing stones in a glass house...

It's the kind of mind-warping doublethink that leaves you speechless isn't it.

JKR= just said an actual truth about 51% of the world's population, and is equated to Voldemort (a character she created!)

EB= gets a 2026 reboot and no-one mention the gollywog thing because Obviously that's just an error on her part, she couldn't help it, she didn't mean it ofc! She is so clearly not racist, please go and see our movie where the lead adults are also not poc; but boycott the literary legacy of a woman who speaks a truth that some men just don't want to hear.

I'm going to go and do some breathing exercises now before I lose my mind completely and sneak onto the moon mission to gtfo this insane, planet of patriarchal shite. 🚀

Andrew Garfield is a decent actor but seems a bit of an odd ball and all over the place in his personal life. I am not sure his opinions are really worth listening to.

Agree with pps about actors

It's just a shame that people like him do have an influence over a lot of people, or they think they do, but they often choose to misuse that opportunity, sadly

Precisely… Richard Dawkins is able to discuss the issues without taking sides and makes room for women to explain what the issue from their point of view.

They never denounce him or Ricky Gervias

Or even that their personal politics should be discussed when they are speaking about a film.

I have a lot of opinions on different things but I don’t discuss them at work. I discuss them with my friends

Actually you’re absolutely right about the insult to his looks. You’re right to call me out on that. It was a low blow because it made me angry. I’m still angry. But it has nothing to do with how anyone looks. Apologies to those who are far more erudite in this debate than me.

Thanks for saying that. People usually double down.
