Disappointed at Andrew Garfield remarks about JKR

2021x · 28/03/2026 22:44

In recent press for the Magic Faraway Tree, Andrew Garfield was trying to make the point that people who worked on HP projects should be respected for their art. He refused to use JKR name, and called her "she should remain nameless".

This for some reason has hit me a bit harder than I thought it would, and I am confused as to why. His PR is very rainbow-adjacent i.e. does Drag-race. He has always has picked "sensitive-man roles" that appeal to men rather than women. So even if he isn't actully gay-gay, he obviously much prefers the company of men- even when they are dressed as women. So there really is no reason for me to think that he actually cares about women and their safety and dignity at all.

Maybe because we are the same-ish age and similar cultural backgrounds that I thought he would have seen through all the misogynist bullshit. I think its fine to say you disagree with JKR but to demonise her to the same level as Voldemort... seems a bit.. culty?

Being able to speak well and use big words is often mistaken as a sign of intelligence.

It's not.

This is very true.

I’m disappointed in him also as have always quite liked him as an actor but to know he’s a woman-hating weasel is so disappointing.

Also agree with the comments about how all these ‘virtuous’ men have nothing to say about MJ & yet have plenty to say about a woman who says no & dares to stand up for all biological women!

SnoopyPajamas · 29/03/2026 13:44

Haven't read the full thread, but honestly? I'm surprised you're surprised, OP. My expectations for actors are on the floor these days. I tend to assume they're all stupid virtue signallers unless they prove otherwise. Same with musicians.

The last few years have killed off most of the respect I once had for celebrities. Seeing them all be so spineless on women's rights was definitely part of it, but I don't even think it's just that anymore? It feels more like . . . everything. Since the pandemic I just have zero tolerance for the whole stupid Hollywood game. Maybe it's a part of getting older? These days, the celebs I respect are those who stay in their lane and just do their job.

I make an exception for JKR, because she really was in a situation where she was the only woman who could afford to take the hit of speaking out. We'd seen smaller creators try and fail. Publishing and the creative space especially needed someone to shine a light on what was happening, for the world outside FWR. And the trans cult did come for her first. But once we're out of the woods on this, I would love for her to be able to go back to mostly talking about her writing. I don't want her to be defined by the trans issue. It would be letting the TRAs win.

“Khelif has not competed since sex tests were introduced by World Boxing last year, taking the fight to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in a bid to compete without being tested, for which a hearing is yet to be held.”

The 'test' to compete in the Olympics was an F on his passport. This is following two failed sex eligibility tests for previous competitions

You know all this of course.

Yet the sympathy for the man who knowing went into a ring and beat up women continues.

I have no words really. It's been utterly and depressing eye opening,

The 'test' to compete in the Olympics was an F on his passport.

Olympic athletes undergo all manner of testing, including for T/E levels. These are random, year round.

This is following two failed sex eligibility tests

This was a claim made by the IBA that has never been substantiated. No data or criteria were ever published. The IBA is a disgraced Russian organization that was subsequently stripped of IOC recognition. If you know anything about boxing you'll know why.

Yet the sympathy for the man who knowing went into a ring and beat up women continues

I feel bad for Khelif like I'd feel bad for anyone forced to have a deeply personal medical issue play out in public.

But if there are concerns then it's quite right that they're addressed openly. I don't have sympathy for that her in that regard.

And if it's established that she wasn't eligible, of course I'll have sympathy for the other boxers. I'm just waiting for the facts.

The lab reports gave been published in the media

You should have no trouble providing a link then?

The French outlet that published claims made following the unsubstantiated IBA tests is currently facing legal action.

The IOC said that these claims were 'not worth a response'.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 29/03/2026 14:14

Yeah as if Khelif’s trainers would really lift him up and parade him on their shoulders if they really thought he was a Muslim woman. I’ll tell the jokes.

“Khelif has not competed since sex tests were introduced by World Boxing last year, taking the fight to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in a bid to compete without being tested, for which a hearing is yet to be held.”

She is arguing over the mandatory requirement of a particular type of test, not that she should be exempt from testing.

She's prepping for the Olympics and has repeatedly confirmed that she's happy to be tested.

But the fighter is happy to take a sex test for the next Olympics, saying to CNN in February: 'Of course, I would accept doing anything I'm required to do to participate in competitions.

Islamophobia isn't argument, sweetheart.

Nor is misogyny (Khelif is a woman) or transphobia, or homophobia.

I know, Mumsnet wouldn't function without them though.

Hey, why not add some ableist comments about autistic people and complete the set?

Have a great day now.

Self righteousness isn't a good look either.

A) There hasn't been sex testing in the Olympics since the 1990s

B) Both tests were done in independent labs. Absolutely no reason to dismiss them. You'll also note that Khelif has not entered a single competition since where sex testing was required

C) Khelif could have taken and published an independent test at any time to shut all this down, yet he didn't. I wonder why?

I didn't say there was, I said she passed every test required to compete at the Olympics.

B) Both tests were done in independent labs. Absolutely no reason to dismiss them.

There are no test results to dismiss. The IBA wouldn't even say what kind of test was administered. The IBA are a corrupt, incompetent joke, if they told me the sky was blue I'd look outside to check.

They banned a second boxer at the same time as Khelif, for failing the exact same tests. Since confirmed to be female.

Khelif has not entered a single competition since where sex testing was required

She's not entered any competitions full stop. She's currently challenging the testing requirements in court. Her next competition is the Olympics and she's confirmed that she'll take any test required to compete.

That is interesting thanks pp. Also the quote from CS telling the bronze (should have been bronze) athlete to keep quiet. "She'd have been a better runner if she bit her lip/kept her mouth shut" something to that effect. 🙄

If that's not proof of maleness Idk what is.

That's disappointing re: the medals. I guess they're not disqualifying the male athletes or applying the new criteria retroactively.

Gutting for the girls that missed out.

Why should she?

Why wouldn't he?? It would answer the question once and for all wouldn't it? And then could he sue all those people he's been threatening too

but you know why, we all know why, he won't take the test

instead he wants special rules just for him

scoobydeedoo · 29/03/2026 15:05

It's funny, considering Harvey Weinstein was a sexual predator, I have NEVER seen actors come out to distance themselves from him, bend over backwards to make sure the world knows just how deplorable they think he is, separate the art from the artist yada yada yada, drop his name in random press releases that don't have anything to do with him.

JK Rowling shock horror doesn't believe that humans can change sex and she is treated like scum, we are constantly told that supporting her work is literally supporting trans-genocide, she is every bloody name under the sun.

I'm so, so sick of it.

Bigwelshlamb · 29/03/2026 15:12

Going against JKR’s view that women should be entitled to retain single sex spaces and sports is disappointing. The majority of women would agree. Why do you think they shouldn’t? Why are men’s feelings prioritised over women’s? It’s a male issue not a trans one.

Do tell.

I think with DSD, it's comments like this which get really unhelpful. And also, as I explained, conflating it with trans is unhelpful too.

Outwardly she will look female. With female genitalia. This page might be useful to learn more.

Differences in sex development - NHS

When she started boxing she probably had no idea she had a Y chromosome. And at the time when she was able to box, she was allowed to by most governing bodies including the IOC.

She is a she. She's been called a girl since birth. At no point has she changed her identity. At some point she will have found out that due to an abnormality, she is genetically male.

To call her "he" starts getting into areas I do think are discriminatory and for nothing helpful.

Whether she or other women with DSD which confers higher testosterone levels or some benefits of that Y chromosome should compete in Olympic sport? No I don't think they should. But it doesn't mean I have to be mean about her nor say some of the things JKR has. Having a difference of opinion doesn't mean you have to be cruel about it.

Does “she” have a body geared up to produce eggs or sperm? That’s the central question.

The answer being if “she” has 5ARD as is assumed from all the reports and sex tests, “she” has XY chromosomes, undescended testicles that produce male levels of testosterone and no uterus, no ovaries, no breasts, and is in fact , male.

No-one doubts this is a tough thing to discover at puberty, but a male person with a micropenis or no obvious penis at birth is NOT female.

Screamingabdabz · 29/03/2026 15:30

McSilkson · 29/03/2026 02:26

Incredibly immature and unnecessary response. Rather ironice that you are saying he should "grow up". His appearance is irrelevant (though many find him attractive). When you resort to insulting somebody's appearance, you've effectively lost the argument, and it only reflects negatively on you.

In any case, Garfield is an actor, not a model. He gets regular work because he is generally considered a very good actor.

I could say plenty of nasty things about the appearance of say, Posie Parker, or Julie Bindel, or even JKR these days, but I wouldn't, even if I did not agree with them.

Sadly, a lot of women on this board really show themselves up whenever anyone criticises JKR.

Edited

Actually you’re absolutely right about the insult to his looks. You’re right to call me out on that. It was a low blow because it made me angry. I’m still angry. But it has nothing to do with how anyone looks. Apologies to those who are far more erudite in this debate than me.
