Hannah Spencer harassed in Manchester

Despite the fact that certain very vocal sections of this board are aggressively anti-trans and anti-Green, I'd gently suggest that this kind of confrontation and abuse is unacceptable in any civilised society, regardless of personal ideologies.

Perhaps the saddest irony here is that these male bigots claim to be protecting women's rights whilst trying to attack a woman MP. On International Women's Day.

I'd be curious to see how other MNetters feel about this situation...

Green Party say 'Hannah Spencer won't be silenced' after Manchester violence

Hannah Spencer, Gorton and Denton's newly-elected MP, was ushered into a police car amid the unfolding chaos

Over on Reddit, this is what the TRAs are planning for Alice Sullivan.

Hi everyone, I am a researcher at one of the European universities. Prof. Alice Sullivan was invited to speak at one of the events. My colleagues and I are planning to do a protest during her visit.
We want to focus on three things:

  1. low quality of her academic/policy work,
  2. her problematic connections to organizations such as Sex Matters, and
  3. how she and her work have impacted trans folks in the UK.
We are already printing out her problematic tweets, mistakes in the Sullivan's Review for the UK government. Please, if you can, provide more information on other works of hers that are low-quality or problematic, why Sex Matters is hugely problematic, and, if you feel like it, your personal experience on how Sullivan/ her report/ Sex Matters/ the discourse around it has impacted your life as trans folks. We, of course, are doing our own research, but I thought this was a good place to ask, since my colleagues and I are mainly not from the UK and do not know the context well.

We plan to make her feel as unwelcome as it is possible!

How would these people cope if the word "problematic" was banished from their vocabulary?

Despite being immersed in this shit for about nine years, I continue to be astonished by how unbelievably thick these people are. Maybe one day I'll come to terms with it.

Ooh it's those folksy "folks" again!

What do they mean by "events" here?

What a surprise....

So, are they going to debate her findings with her? Or just try to drown out her session so no one can hear? Because one would be the mature way to interact and the other not so much....

FranticFrankie · 09/03/2026 17:29

The woman in the sparkly green jacket with the old trope pontificating about violence against women and girls being perpetuated by 'cisgender men' doesn't watch news or read a newspaper or read online! Where has she been? Bonkers absolutely bonkers

But at least she didn't punch Matrix or swear at him.

The problem is, when your arguments amount to shouting unintelligibly about bigotted brands and toxic pitchforks, you probably are better off taking the drowning-out approach.

No doubt you are correct there Catiette.

Basially we are supposed to feel sorry for Hannah for being asked questions and completely ignore that one of her security punched a woman, because its ok to punch women if the men who punch the women are on the 'right side of history'? Or something?

That’s about the size of it, I think.

Is anyone in touch with her, she should be made aware.

Yeah, she probably only got a job as Professor at UCL because no-one else applied and they were desperate, or something🙄

efeslight · 09/03/2026 19:14

Am shocked at the violence from the man in the green hat who as far as I can understand, works for unison. I hope he is arrested soon

StormyPotatoes · 09/03/2026 19:24

Has OP actually condemned the Unison man who punched the women in the face?

Or is this another case of ‘hurty words’ (asking questions of an MP) actually worse than literal physical violence towards women?

Greyskybluesky · 09/03/2026 19:27

OP has left the chat after being shown up for not understanding the situation properly

Of course, this pitchforks and brand-waving clamour has rather derailed the thread, which presumably was the intention in the first place by the usual suspects here, but it has at least been instructive that it has provided a neatly clear picture about the political ideologies that are core to this forum.

Maybe the online magazine Jezebel was right when they said MN "has become a toxic breeding ground for transphobia"...? 🤔

Just back down, TRA. You've had your arguments disproven. You can't even outline what you, or trans activists want, instead you're asking us to? How can we, when you can't.

You think that transgender feeling is more important and takes precendent over women's rights. You're avoiding facing the truth and it shows. Just think, for one moment, without all of your ingrained brainwashed slogans. Think about it logically and you will see. It's okay to admit that you were wrong.

NewGoldFox · 09/03/2026 19:48

Shortshriftandlethal · 09/03/2026 15:00

The Matrix guy is not Billboard Chris.

Apologies, I’ve not watched either of them before but wanted to see the story for myself.
OP seems to have the completely wrong end of the stick from what I can see.

  1. says the researcher of a Professor's work. If they're soliciting information from Reddit, they'll likely to be nothing more than a low grade researcher for the rest of their career.
  2. Sex Matters is a women's right's organisation, only an anti-women misogynist would think a connection was problematic.
  3. Easy to answer, it hasn't impacted on them in anyway whatsoever.

Heaven forbid they actually attend the event and learn something, while they're in a place of higher education. They'll get nothing from the Reddits but dribble.

Thick and mean. So many who are incredibly thin skinned, quick to take offence, short sighted, yet self righteous and arrogant.

Wait, are we talking about genderists or university faculty? I’m happy to include the lot together ie genderists academics.

Maybe academics more broadly. Maybe all university staff 🤔

Edited to add that coordinating an attack on an academic’s professional standing simply and only because she holds a different view on a matter is ruthless and the opposite of what education is supposed to mean based on values of open discussion and careful interrogation of a concept for its validity.

DrBlackbird · 10/03/2026 08:15

SmallChildCryingTearsofButter · 09/03/2026 14:27

Outed themselves as what?

You’re getting very cryptic…

Women posting on boards organised around feminism and women’s rights outing themselves as… feminists concerned about the attack on women’s rights. It’s shocking.

Helleofabore · 10/03/2026 08:20

Some people will take any opportunity to patronise and demonise women.

You’ll know the quip about why academic competition is so bitchy? Because the stakes are so small…

ThatBlackCat · 10/03/2026 09:48

The male Unison Rep punched a female journalist in the face. TRAs also started the physical conflict. So put the blame where it belongs OP. On TRAs. It's more evidence of TRA violence. They're really a cliche at this point.

Politicians regularly face abuse these days.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5ywp7lgwvro

So much so, some won't even talk on record about it.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c334mj5l3ymo

Yes, and look at the abuse and death threats Rosie Duffield got from TRAs. She had to pull out of going on the hustings at one point. I bet the OP never condemned that.

ThatBlackCat · 10/03/2026 10:02

MissScarletInTheBedroom · 09/03/2026 10:47

"But can you clarify: we here are pro women's rights. Is that in conflict with what trans people want?"

We are all pro-women's rights. That really should be obvious to you by now.

Is that in conflict with what trans people want? That depends. What is it you think trans people want?

You're not pro womens rights if you think it's ok for fully intact males to enter female only changing rooms and toilets because they wear a dress and claim to be a transwoman.

What is it you think trans people want?

Males in female spaces, sport, etc.

ThatBlackCat · 10/03/2026 10:14

MissScarletInTheBedroom · 09/03/2026 11:05

"No idea tbh but why are they always so aggressive?"

You admit to having no idea about a marginalised group, but still condemn make statements that they want total domination?

I can't imagine any other situation in life where people have no idea about a group of people but are still aggressively opposed to them...

Males are 50% of the population and are the predator and oppressor sex class. That doesn't change because a male puts on a dress. The fact that trans were able to obliterate womens sex based rights and spaces in one decade, have us redefined, reorder society promoting them on IWD, and getting women sacked who say no, is PROOF of that they are the most protected, most privileged and most powerful Sacred Caste there is.

Point out the 'transphobia'. If being pro womens sex based rights is 'twwwannnsphobic', then being pro trans is anti women. Jezebel seems to be a hotbed of misogynistic femphobic political ideology.

No, my definition of women does not include men pretending to be women.
No, that is not the type of woman who is marginalised.

I'd have thought this should have been obvious...

So your definition of women does not include transwomen then? Please clarify if that's what you're saying?
