Jeepers. Starmer really hasn’t bothered to get his head round the issues AT ALL, has he, if he thinks Harman is the solution?

RobinStrike · 09/05/2026 11:11

I agree @ickky I’d feel happier if it was Gordon Brown as advisor for women and girls

SionnachRuadh · 09/05/2026 11:16

Next thing you know he'll be announcing Harold Shipman as health secretary.

SionnachRuadh · 09/05/2026 11:23

On the one hand it says something about this man's thought processes that people tell him the voters want change, and his instinct is to make up part-time jobs to bring back Labour politicians from 20 years ago.

But also, he's already got two ministers with VAWG responsibilities, Jess Phillips (Home Office) and Alex Davies-Jones (MOJ). If he feels the need to bring in Harman as an adviser in the same area, what does that say about his confidence in his ministers?

(Not that I've got much confidence in Jess but I'm not the PM)

Iamnotalemming · 09/05/2026 12:19

Harman. Great. He's only one step away from asking Alistair Campbell to advise.

Neither are Labour old blood that are remotely liked by the electorate. Brown lost an election, emphatically.

Wtf is the matter with these people?

This looks like Operation Save Big Dog all over again, when Boris's people knew he was doomed but were just trying to help him survive each day.

I think the theory is that the PLP is extremely jittery, and Brown carries weight with Scottish MPs and Harman carries weight with women MPs, both groups that have issues with Starmer. There's zero evidence that they're popular with actual voters.

But if the response to a drubbing from voters is to say "send for Harriet and Gordon", I can't help wondering if someone in the Downing Street bunker has gone mad... or if someone is actively sabotaging their delusional leader because they know he'll never go voluntarily.

Maybe mandleson would have been a step too far?

OpheliaWitchoftheWoods · 09/05/2026 15:04

Well he can pull in Blair as the tea boy, Margaret Beckett can run the hoover round, David Blunkett can do a bit of the cabinet meeting minutes, Alastair Darling I hear is quite good at cutting sandwiches if Jack Straw helps him, they should have the bunker all set.

Let's party like it's 1997.

I have just heard Bridget Philipson on Times radio where she was questioned on when the guidance would be laid before Parliament. She said it would be as soon as possible when Parliament returns, after the King's speech. So within the month. She also said that the Supreme Court judgment made it clear that sex means biological sex and "I know what a woman is" when the interviewer (Adam Boulton) asked her.

FarriersGirl · 10/05/2026 11:33

I heard that interview and Adam Boulter also asked her [twice] if women could have a penis which resulted in a long pause.....Needless to say she did not actually provide a direct answer.

MelOfTheRoses · 10/05/2026 11:52

I didn't think she was very clear about when the guidance would be laid before parliament. She said as soon as possible, but then there were lots of little qualifications. It shouldn't be that difficult.

Pingponghavoc · 10/05/2026 11:53

Im starting to think she doesn't want to do it.

SionnachRuadh · 10/05/2026 13:03

I almost feel sorry for her having to do the Sunday media round today, especially after Keir dropped her in the shit with his "I'm going to be PM for ten years" interview.

Almost.

She's clearly running out of road to kick the can down.

I have to say, I read that as sarcasm.

IdaGlossop · 10/05/2026 17:49

What is Keir Starmer doing allowing this to drag on for so long, unless it suits him too for it not to be published? He should have given her a kick up the arse months ago and got her to commit to a date. Ditto Jess Phillips and the rape gang enquiry. Ditto Yvette Cooper and Shabana Mahmood and housing undocumented male migrants in areas of population density.

Each of those three things would have had an impact on violence against women and girls, except the violence meted out to three female secretaries of state and a minister.

Yeah, that is true! 🤦‍♀️

Anyone else worried that Starmer's appointment of Harriet TWAW Harman as "Advisor on Women and Girls" is like when the cops throw those spikes across the road in front of a moving vehicle?

"Let's see what Harriet thinks, Bridget. This is very important and we need to get it right. We don't want to rush things and she is my Advisor on Women and Girls, after all."

Bridget Phillipson definitely said she was in charge, on Times Radio, this morning. 🤔
