Spotted on the Guardian today:

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2025/nov/28/sugababes-sophie-ellis-bextor-wolf-alice-and-more-to-play-all-star-charity-concert-for-trans-rights

Raising money for the kimono-clad fox-killer's "Good" Law Project.

Definitely one to avoid!

Sugababes, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Wolf Alice and more to play all-star charity concert for trans rights

Organised by Olly Alexander and the Mighty Hoopla festival to ‘fight back against the politics of fear and exclusion’, Trans Mission will take place at Wembley Arena in March

IANAL, and accounting isn't my field either, but the whole thing seems like a lovely set up for lawyers.

you can see a record of all the cases we’ve ever brought and/or raised money for, together with a summary of the outcomes, campaigning and legal

I tried clicking on their link, but apparently I don't have permission to see it.

Fortunately, Richard Dunstan (Wonkypolicywonk on Twix) has collated that date for you:

Lost cause: the crowdfunded lawfare of Jolyon Maugham KC

[Note: This blog post, including the table, charts and GLP organogram below, is regularly updated; it was last updated on 30 November] You ain’t nothin’ but a lost causeAnd this ain&#82…

Maugham receives a salary pegged to the pay received by a backbench MP, which is currently £93,904 per year.'

I note that JMs salary is reported as being pegged to a backbench MP but that is not necessarily his total remuneration package which could include significant pension contributions.

Thank you for the link with its Table of Failure and Futility.

Thanks for the share token.

"Critics argue that the GLP’s enthusiasm for taking legally difficult cases can damage the causes that are being backed. Judicial review cases are heard in the High Court and the rulings create legal precedent. Losing a case can significantly set back that cause". 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

'Effectively unregulated, utterly convinced of his own moral rectitude, and accountable to no one, he is a semen stain on the reputation of the legal profession, an industrial-scale grifter, and a conman, extracting vast sums from the fearful and the ill-informed to spend on his personal and ideological hobby-horses as he – and only he – sees fit.'

Don't hold back, like, tell us what you really think.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 01/12/2025 13:45

It's the perfect grift innit

take on a large number of impossible to win cases because unaccountably despite being lawyers they seem to not understand how the law works

fail repeatedly

blame the system and the man for being loaded against you rather than you being crap at the law

ask for more money to smash the system

rinse and repeat

ArabellaSaurus · 01/12/2025 13:45

Oh, here we go:

'Maugham’s idiosyncratic, scattergun lawfare is an offence to our parliamentary democracy, while the GLP’s exploitative crowdfunding is often almost indistinguishable from the criminal offence of obtaining money by deception

Maybe he or the others get London homes paid for. Subsidised meals. Adjunct fees. Travel and incidental expenses. Private health care premiums. School fees paid. We just don’t know what kind of packages any of the GLP people are on, and for what kind of hours worked or productivity.

It still seems pretty opaque to me.

I liked this comment too:

And, last month, they settled their rather silly legal claim against the US law form Morrison Foerster on behalf of an unidentified transman (who, for reasons unknown, received only 20% of the £25,000 damages paid by Morrison Foerster, with the remainder going to the GLP).

It does seem that the GLP paid out £5,000 each to Trans+ Solidarity Alliance, Equality for Trans Families, Trans Legal Clinic and the Gender Identity Research & Education Society. The GLP, of course, got costs awarded.

“GLP taking the rest. It will donate £5,000 each to Trans+ Solidarity Alliance, Equality for Trans Families, Trans Legal Clinic and the Gender Identity Research & Education Society.”

are all of these (GIRES excepted) newly minted ‘orgs’? Or are they just so low profile that even a dedicated terf such as myself has barely heard of any of them?

moto748e · 01/12/2025 14:38

Equality for Trans Families website features a photo titled, "A dad hugs his 3-year-old while pregnant with his second child" 🙄

Trans Legal Clinic is essentially transwoman Olivia Campbell-Cavendish (no idea how much actual legal experience they have - LinkedIn has them as only doing the LNAT in 2020, previously TUI cabin crew).

Teaming up with Victoria McCloud and Mx Oscar 'dying swan' Davies to take a case to ECtHR.

SabrinaThwaite · 01/12/2025 15:18

Trans+ Solidarity Alliance was registered at Companies House in Dec 2023 - one of its first directors seems to be Nancy Kelley (who has since resigned, she's now at Allsorts Youth Project in Brighton).

Old job adverts suggest enhanced pension contributions, private medical insurance and life assurance - that was for a "Campaign Technology Officer", and I should imagine those further up the ladder will get expenses etc, possibly bonuses on top of base salary.

He just graduated about half an hour ago.

Equality for Trans Families is registered with Companies House as a private company limited by guarantee without share capital, incorporated on 3 June 2021.

One remaining director, Alfred McConnell, born September 1986.

Freddy McConnell, no surprise there (and hence the photo on the website home page).

Financial review for last year:

' In 2024-2025, we raised £4.5m, compared to £4.7m the previous year. Our expenditure decreased from £4.8m in the previous year to £4.7m. Our income from regular donations amounted to £3.2m, and we also received £673,000 in one-off general and earmarked donations. These vital income streams enabled us to deliver our legal campaigns and maintain a sustainable organisation. Although our income from individuals or organisations giving us £1,000 or more increased a little from 9% last year to 12%, we are proud that we remain overwhelmingly funded from small donations. We expect that our major donor income stream will increase further but we are committed to our people-powered model. We ended the year with general funds of £2.7m. As well as providing working capital, these reserves allow us to seize opportunities, weather setbacks, adapt should we face an adverse event, and manage financial risks. In addition, we continue to set aside a Legal Defence Fund, amounting to £850,000 at 31 January 2025, to underwrite any significant litigation costs risks.'#

Curious how the fuck they are spending £165k on a website?

goodlawproject.org/about/governance-and-funding/

£200k for payment processing fees!!
Fuck my old boots are they sending Ubers round to collect their donations?

DamsonGoldfinch · 01/12/2025 15:52

£1.7m on staff costs in 24-25 according to their accounts. I would suggest that Joly pays himself rather a lot more than a back bench MP. Don’t forget he’s a tax lawyer - his whole career up until now is about finding ways for HNWIs to limit their tax liabilities

A mash up of The Impossible Dream, I Want It All (and I want it Now), and The Great Pretender.

And finish up with a rousing chorus of "We will, we will dox you"
