Etsy Die Mad Terf Mugs - part of their trans inclusive line of products

See https://www.etsy.com/listing/1858479662/die-mad-terfs-trans-inclusive-mug

I thought this must be a wind up in a Daily Express article but turns out to be true.

Other items include lawn signs reading “In this house we don’t mourn dead transphobes”

Mims Davies MP, the Shadow Women’s Minister, said: “My actual first thought was who actually relaxes with a cup of tea with a death threat on to women?

“This is appalling and, once the item is quickly removed from sale, serious questions need to be asked.”

Fury as Etsy sells ‘Die Mad Terfs’ mug branded death threat

Etsy faces backlash over a £16 mug with the slogan ‘Die Mad Terfs', branded a "death threat to women" by MP demanding its removal.

Every good office should aspire to have a tea trolley, imho.

Of course. That's the dream. 😍

We're discussing the writing on cups, not the cups. (Or were).

Writing doesn't magically become unsexist or inoffensive by virtue of being applied to a drinking vessel.

I really wasnt scarred by it. I might have even chuckled when I first saw it. Any way, the pint remains that mug game is female dominated.

Mochudubh · 06/11/2025 10:07

OK, I've Googled. The M&B fallacy does not appear to mean what the poster using it thinks it means.

What does it mean? That our new Norman masters have started castle building to keep an eye on us?!

ArabellaSaurus · 06/11/2025 10:10

A message that is racist, sexist, misogynist, offensive, etc, doesn't magically become okay if it's 'just a joke' or 'a game', or written on a mug.

Colour me astonished

someone in my office has brought in a ‘don’t blame me, I voted remain’ mug (yikes!). It languishes, never used, in the mug cupboard

like I say, expressing yourself through edgy mugs probably reveals things about you that you don’t really want others to know

So what? Confused Seriously, what difference does that make?

A) wasnt a death threat on the mug
B) such slogans etc on cups are more associated with witty women than misogynistic men.

lcakethereforeIam · 06/11/2025 10:18

I think the motte bailey might possibly be a reference to the motte and bailey fallacy. An example, the bailey - transpeople should be able to be the gender they are most comfortable as and use the facilities they are most comfortable with. When challenged (challenges summed up as 'wtf!'), they retreat to the motte, only if they have a GRC. A less extreme position. Although tras actually tend to stand upon the few stones that are left, or, more commonly, the trench where the wall was, shovels in hand, calling people 'terfs', 'transphobes' and 'bigots'.

Doesn't easily fit on a mug. Although that's something tras often take other people for.

How about

c) likely 50% of that teachers students were boys. Did her incredibly witty mug contribute to a learning environment that felt safe and supportive for them?

what part of do your fucking job and don’t make your customers uncomfortable is hard to get?

Honestly it was early 2000s so the boys didnt care. We weren't this soft back then.

The meaning of the slogan is ambiguous but the DIE being in larger letters tends to put the emphasis on it so it does read as a threat rather than your interpretation (which is still nasty and wouldn’t be ok in any decent organisation).

Perhaps women do have more witty mugs than men, idk … do you honestly think this item is remotely ‘witty’? Even if it was, how would that make it ok?

You're defending the indefensible here.
….sorry just realised you were discussing the teachers mug.
however that’s not really what the thread was about. Why would you come on here to defend the Die mad terms mug?

Die Mad are the words with similar size and style. Terfs is different.

So it says something like DIE MAD TERFs

Or weren’t able to talk about it?

boys in general really fit in at school don’t they? No need to think outside the box to try to help them get the best educational achievement possible

deffo not something a teacher should waste her time thinking about

My personal views on whether it is funny or not are irrelevant. Like they are about r
The cups that say Man U are shit.

I find some funny. Others not. I've not saw a cup slogan I found offensive yet.

lcakethereforeIam · 06/11/2025 10:27

Talking about different mugs. Male Tears not Die Terf. Although, if anyone is interested, etsy facilitates the selling of many a merry merchandise with 'Terf tears'.

<heroically tries to drag thread back on track>

Eta I see events overtook me.

It was 6th form/college. We just got on with A Level Sociology and Psychology and let our teacher drink from her cup. It was simpler times.

Come off it. It’s smaller because it’s a longer word, same style. Whereas the Die is bigger than the mad and didn’t need to be. Your slim argument is actually arse about face.

No i really think that Die and Mad are in the same size and style. Terfs is slightly different size but same font.
