Etsy Die Mad Terf Mugs - part of their trans inclusive line of products

See https://www.etsy.com/listing/1858479662/die-mad-terfs-trans-inclusive-mug

I thought this must be a wind up in a Daily Express article but turns out to be true.

Other items include lawn signs reading “In this house we don’t mourn dead transphobes”

Mims Davies MP, the Shadow Women’s Minister, said: “My actual first thought was who actually relaxes with a cup of tea with a death threat on to women?

“This is appalling and, once the item is quickly removed from sale, serious questions need to be asked.”

Fury as Etsy sells ‘Die Mad Terfs’ mug branded death threat

Etsy faces backlash over a £16 mug with the slogan ‘Die Mad Terfs', branded a "death threat to women" by MP demanding its removal.

I’ve never seen a mug with a nasty message on it in an office. Most people surely know it’d be grossly unprofessional?

You certainly couldn't do that in my workplace! A quick way to an official warning...

Most people see them as funny. I guess you have to have a similar sense of humour to most in attendance. Luckily it usually pans out that way.

Some workplaces are horrible, sexist cesspits, its true. The type of place that had a pork scratchings calendar on the wall that revealed the woman's breasts as people bought more snacks.

Oh, the person I first saw with a "male tears" mug was my female teacher in 6th form. In fact, I'd say women have better mug game in this respect than men.

Revolting.
It's more pleasant to discuss excessive drinking and aftermath than that misogynist crap!

JadeSquid · 06/11/2025 09:06

I've mostly seen men with the footie related ones that say bad things about another team.

ArabellaSaurus · 06/11/2025 09:07

Jade is 100% correct. It does depend on the type of workplace culture that relies on othering and insulting minorities, and uses supposed humour as camouflage. Like making racist 'jokes'.

Who would be the minority in the examples I've given? Men? Man U supporters?

ArabellaSaurus · 06/11/2025 09:12

No teacher should ever have displayed or supported such a cruel and sexist message. I'm sorry that happened to you.

Yeah, ‘minorities’ is a bit of a red herring - sexist slogans are probably more commonly misogynistic. The fact women aren’t a minority obviously doesn’t excuse them.

lcakethereforeIam · 06/11/2025 09:12

In the offices I've worked in the mugs were mostly cutesy, obscure office supply companies or Sports Direct. Except for one woman who could only have cold drinks or her mug got pornographic.

Mugs in my office are generally chosen for capacity, mouthfeel, cooling rate, anf aesthetics. I"ve never seen any messages on any of them. Maybe depends on the industry.

We used to have some on which a caffeine molecule would appear when filled with a hot drink.

The contemporary equivalent of this.

Ah yes. Sadly, we see the comment equivalent on some MN threads. Try to post anything remotely feminist or question why a man wants to go to a strip joint. Sigh.

I want one of those.
A colleague gave me a mug with a picture of Stalin on, which I took as a compliment.

I wish mugs would be standardised from a h&s perspective. Trying to carry six hot drinks with a diverse array of handles is actively dangerous.

All good reasons not to use a mug to drink sparkling wine.

What kind of crazy workplace is this?!
We are only allowed those thermos mugs with a lid! We regularly get emails reminding us of this policy and the dangers of ignoring it 😱

Trying to carry six hot drinks in any sort of mug without a tray seems like a bad idea tbh!

We used to have a set of small beakers stashed away in the kitchen of the lab where I was a grad student to drink sparkling wine from to celebrate birthdays and accepted publications.

Glass is always one step up than ceramic or terracotta, Ig, when it comes to imbibing the bubbles.

Fire Oops GIF

Seems like potential for mix ups.

I realise the thread has moved on but I'm still none the wiser about the relevance of Motte & Baileys (motte and baillies/mottes and baileys?). .

I'm a big fan of motte and baileys, they featured heavily in my dissertation*. I will be upset if they have become a symbol of TRArrorism.

*Despite my ignorance of the correct plural.

We're discussing the writing on cups, not the cups. (Or were).

Writing doesn't magically become unsexist or inoffensive by virtue of being applied to a drinking vessel.

Trays!? We'd dream of trays. If someone brought one in, it'd go walkies and never be seen again. Probably why we all used crap mugs. Anything too nice would disappear. Problems of having a shared brew area.

Funnily enough we shared an office with the h&s team.
