Wow. Just…wow. It’s so depressing how many female misogynists there are, and how many are in powerful positions.

I saw this and thought it was a parody honestly I couldn't believe that an actual politician who's supposed to be a feminist would say something like that.

Helleofabore · 30/10/2025 11:00

When I first saw it, I was very surprised by AOC. However, Simone Biles said something similar didn't she? I suspect that there are many people who have dismissed Riley and the other women's points using some similar points.

Remember there is a stream of feminists who believe that if female athletes train harder or differently, they will be fully competitive to male athletes.

The fact so many people believe that is also really depressing. There’s a reason why we have men’s and women’s sports in the first place.

One thing that amazes me about the whole trans debate is how many people (including many very ‘intelligent’ people working in science) can dismiss decades of scientific evidence because it doesn’t fit with an idealogical position they’ve wedded themselves to.

Fortunately RG isn't in a powerful position.

lcakethereforeIam · 30/10/2025 11:25

Fortunately for AOC. If Riley Gaines was a Member of Congress she'd wipe the floor with her. Honestly, AOC provided more of a useful public service when she had a proper job serving behind a bar.

PollyNomial · 30/10/2025 11:27

Not watched any C-SPAN coverage then.

RingoJuice · 30/10/2025 11:30

AOC obviously knows nothing about what it takes to be an elite athlete. Riley does.

lcakethereforeIam · 30/10/2025 11:31

Isn't that a brand of orange?

Fortunately RG isn't in a powerful position.

RG is in a VERY powerful position because Congresswomen like AOC feel the need to talk about her again and again and share her story. If she wasn't powerful why mention her?

RG wants the Republicans to win the next elections.

AOC is working to the same end with this stuff. All AOC needs to do is keep saying men are not stronger than women, and women don't deserve to have sport and the Dems will keep losing.

Because it is so stupid it destroys everything else they say.

Helleofabore · 30/10/2025 11:48

It is discordant to hear that RG is considered to be not powerful in her activism. Considering how she has spoken on many events and hearings. She has supported the voices of the other women and girls who needed that encouragement.

I am not sure just what is needed for a woman to be considered powerful these days. Seems that being a significant part of the campaign to save women’s sport is not enough.

cramptramp · 30/10/2025 11:50

I wasn’t surprised by AOC. I think she’s a horrible person.

Fortunately RG isn't in a powerful position.

1.4 million followers on X gives her a wide reach. That is very much a form of power that many elected politicians might envy. Why else is AOC attacking her so viciously?

Because she's a bigot siding with fascists.

I presume you misinterpreted my post deliberately to be inflammatory, because otherwise you need to consult a dictionary.

Helleofabore · 30/10/2025 12:43

Why is Riley Gaines a bigot?

And why should her words be discredited when she is discussing sport and her personal experience?

sanluca · 30/10/2025 12:48

PollyNomial · 30/10/2025 12:28

Because she's a bigot siding with fascists.

So what makes Gaines a bigot?

Saying womens sports means just for women
That allowing a man who ranked in the 600s into the women category where he ranked in the top 5 shows his advantage over women.
That forcing female athletes to change into swimsuits in the presence of male athletes is sexual harrasment. Changing into a racing swimming costume takes about 20 minutes and cannot be done under a towel.
That telling female athletes they needed therapy for objecting to male presence in the womens changing rooms when they were changing, is just wrong
That threatening to destroy any future career if they went to the press is just plain evil.

Gaines is not a bigot in protecting womens sports from cheats like Thomas and misguided illinformed people like you.

NorthXNorthWest · 30/10/2025 12:56

Bit disingenuous OP. RG came for AOC. It's hardly shocking that AOC clapped back at her.

I don't agree with AOC's stance on the Trans issue, it leaves a lot to be desired. She does have a lot of good things to say on other issues. Likewise RG is right to campaign for rights for women in sport but as Republican she leaves a lot be desired on other women's rights, such as abortion.

fromorbit · 30/10/2025 13:03

Escalating. This dispute is viral loads of news articles about it. Jkr now involved.

If you took every trans athlete out of sports, no one would have heard of Riley Gaines. She owes her livelihood to trans athletes.

Meanwhile even creepy Cuomo gets to pontificate

She’s got a big following, she’s got big charisma, she’s got a growing amount of power,” Cuomo admitted on his NewsNation show, even calling her a “real contender in 2028.” But he added that how political leaders behave in public “matters.”
“To be in a teenage trash-talking battle with Riley Gaines, saying she doesn’t have a real job, saying if you didn’t come in fifth, maybe you wouldn’t be so upset, you want to lead the country!?” he exclaimed.

Women who want sports without men in are bigots in your world view then? You just keep right on talking lovey. You getting your batshit views fully heard is VERY helpful

RG is entitled to comment on policies pushed by politicians. AOC is a politician who supports those policies. She should be able to engage in a debate to defend them. As completely typical of supporters of trans inclusive policies she did not engage in debate but chose to sling a personal insult instead.

MarieDeGournay · 30/10/2025 13:20

Nobody comes out of these social media 'spats' aka “teenage trash-talking battles” well, and that applies to AOC and RG who are both scraping the barrel a bit here.. you only came 5th - yes but I'm a mom....
Puhlease!🙄

Can you confirm whether there was any more to it than the following:

Riley Gaines posted at Oct 27, 2025

"We're being destroyed from within" which is a picture of three people including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

https://x.com/Riley_Gaines_/status/1982654572075360550

Which was then answered by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on the same day with:

"Maybe if you channeled all this anger into swimming faster you wouldn’t have come in fifth."

https://x.com/AOC/status/1982882637376303280

Which Riley then replied with on the same day tweet quoting the above tweet:

"It’s always hilarious when they think they’ve landed a “gotcha” by pointing out I was the 5th-fastest woman in the nation yet they conveniently forget the mediocre man who ranked 462nd in the men’s division lol Misogynistic dunce"

And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez then responded to a tweet with a link to an interview that Riley gave on the interaction where apparently Riley said ' I would like to challenge AOC to a debate' :

"And I would like to challenge this person to get a real job."

https://x.com/AOC/status/1982956276679057643

Was there anything before the first tweet from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez making a very personal attack on Riley Gaines that I have missed?
