JK on Emma Watson

Lowarnes · 29/09/2025 13:08

A stunningly perfect response to Watson’s recent comments. Haven’t seen a thread on this so thought I’d post below:

”I'm seeing quite a bit of comment about this, so I want to make a couple of points.

I'm not owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created. The idea is as ludicrous as me checking with the boss I had when I was twenty-one for what opinions I should hold these days.

Emma Watson and her co-stars have every right to embrace gender identity ideology. Such beliefs are legally protected, and I wouldn't want to see any of them threatened with loss of work, or violence, or death, because of them.

However, Emma and Dan in particular have both made it clear over the last few years that they think our former professional association gives them a particular right - nay, obligation - to critique me and my views in public. Years after they finished acting in Potter, they continue to assume the role of de facto spokespeople for the world I created.

When you've known people since they were ten years old it's hard to shake a certain protectiveness. Until quite recently, I hadn't managed to throw off the memory of children who needed to be gently coaxed through their dialogue in a big scary film studio. For the past few years, I've repeatedly declined invitations from journalists to comment on Emma specifically, most notably on the Witch Trials of JK Rowling. Ironically, I told the producers that I didn't want her to be hounded as the result of anything I said.

The television presenter in the attached clip highlights Emma's 'all witches' speech, and in truth, that was a turning point for me, but it had a postscript that hurt far more than the speech itself. Emma asked someone to pass on a handwritten note from her to me, which contained the single sentence 'I'm so sorry for what you're going through' (she has my phone number). This was back when the death, rape and torture threats against me were at their peak, at a time when my personal security measures had had to be tightened considerably and I was constantly worried for my family's safety. Emma had just publicly poured more petrol on the flames, yet thought a one line expression of concern from her would reassure me of her fundamental sympathy and kindness.

Like other people who've never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame, Emma has so little experience of real life she's ignorant of how ignorant she is. She'll never need a homeless shelter. She's never going to be placed on a mixed sex public hospital ward. I'd be astounded if she's been in a high street changing room since childhood. Her 'public bathroom' is single occupancy and comes with a security man standing guard outside the door. Has she had to strip off in a newly mixed-sex changing room at a council-run swimming pool? Is she ever likely to need a state-run rape crisis centre that refuses to guarantee an all-female service? To find herself sharing a prison cell with a male rapist who's identified into the women's prison?

I wasn't a multimillionaire at fourteen. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous. I therefore understand from my own life experience what the trashing of women's rights in which Emma has so enthusiastically participated means to women and girls without her privileges.

The greatest irony here is that, had Emma not decided in her most recent interview to declare that she loves and treasures me - a change of tack I suspect she's adopted because she's noticed full-throated condemnation of me is no longer quite as fashionable as it was - I might never have been this honest.

Adults can't expect to cosy up to an activist movement that regularly calls for a friend's assassination, then assert their right to the former friend's love, as though the friend was in fact their mother. Emma is rightly free to disagree with me and indeed to discuss her feelings about me in public - but I have the same right, and I've finally decided to exercise it.”

I’m saying this is a public shaming. Absolutely JKR should call out whoever and whatever she wants to call out but this was an intellectual flattening and total exposure - just feels a bit much.

I imagine she was so enraged by the manipulative and self serving “I’m the good guy reaching out to jkr in my benevolence” stuff, she decided it was time to let her have both barrels.

It's difficult on mumsnet. There's an echo chamber where anyone with moderate views on this topic or, did forbid, actual trans activists, will get hounded out of conversations. And this was at it's peak years ago so most don't bother to even try now days. You'll see me get flamed for this comment probably now. I'll get inbox messages of abuse as well. I always have on the handful of occasions I've dared to question JK Rowling

How is it an echo chamber when you’ve got the chance to put your arguments across, bearing in mind what this thread is about. If they’re sound you should be able to defend them no? This then turns into a discussion.

Crack on.

I'm no fan of Watson and think JKR is amazing but I genuinely think Watson said 'by the way' instead of 'bar one' during the speech - I didn't see it as referencing JK at all. It doesn't really matter though. Either way Watson has been an idiot and a handmaiden.

Yes I thought she said 'by the way' as well. Anyone here a good lip-reader?

1offnamechange · 29/09/2025 16:25

The alleged bar one/by the way refers to what she mouths immediately after. Nobody is disputing the "all the witches" part.

I agree it was pointed either way though.

Edited

She says "but one" very quietly. The words are sotto voce but also drowned out by whoops from the audience.

I agree there are some perverts out there
however there are non perverts who want to be a different gender. I’ve seen this in children decades ago now. One went on to have sex change as adult . Girl became boy.

this is a good podcast to listen to about the subgroups of males who identify as trans:

So not semantics at all

This fabulous parody cuts right through Watson's smiling bollocks, and what is even funnier is that loads of people actually thought it was the little ninny :) They even had to community note it to tell people it wasn't Watson 😅

Her best hope now is obscurity, to be fair.

Intel lady is a comedian, I'd never heard of her before this, but she is suddenly gaining a lot of traction for her biting parodies. She absolutely nails Watson's entitled babbling word salad attempt to sound like she's terribly "noice"

So EW did several things on TV or in the media which resulted in an increased threat to your children, you would think it a "bit much" to make a public statement about that behaviour several years later after multiple provocations? You'd be able to remain silent about the injustice? Gosh you must be made of much sterner stuff than most humans

It is incredibly poignant, pithy and well written.

As someone said, the character of Hermione was annoying, pretty and clever. But Watson is only annoying and pretty - the clever parts were written for her.

Watson thought that Joanne Rowling would never publicly say anything about Watson and Radcliffe's vile backstabbing. She was counting on it. What a shock for the entitled little cow.

Arguably Hermione was less pretty in the books - isn't she supposed to have buck teeth? I did think casting someone like Emma was a bit of a Hollywood-style concession. Similarly, I wish the adaptation could cast a black-haired green-eyed Harry or use wig/hair dye/contacts. Both are mentioned a lot - I know Radcliffe couldn't wear contacts but maybe the new actor can?

Yes a pp poster who is deaf and lipreads posted above to say they thought it was "but one". Also the lack of clarification from EW after this was widely reported as a dig at JKR suggests that is what she said.

Yes, that's probably true, It wasn't me who actually said this, I was paraphrasing a tweet I read earlier.

EW's actions were terrible.

But I think we need to be careful about saying that what EW said caused the death threats. The evil men (I suspect it was mostly men) who sent them are the ones responsible. No one else. It's a slippery slope to say that someone's words caused someone else to say something.

Because they seem to have been chosen from a small selection of plummy private schools. I think Daniel won the part, in part due to his father's connections.

His father was a friend of the producer. He certainly didn't get it on talent alone. Or talent at all tbf.

I mean, it's also easy enough just to turn off DMs. I have only ever been privately messaged once on mumsnet and I've been on and off here for years and am not at all interested in playing nicely with morons, so I often say things the "noice" crowd allow themselves to feel offended by.

By which I mean to say, I don't believe at all they have received any unpleasant private messages. I think they are lying - to be clear :)

It's quite astonishing how ordinary he is, actually. The only thing I ever saw him in where he was half decent was "Extras" with Ricky Gervais where he was playing a creepy, over entitled version of himself. He was sort of ok in Lady in Black, rather wooden, but not terrible. I've never seen Watson in anything at all beyond Hermione, so can't comment on her acting talent.

Well okay, I’ll analyse it if you like… The most shaming part is the note - this is told in such a way to suggest duplicity, performance, hypocrisy, betrayal, self-interest, immaturity and, worst of all, direct contribution and escalation of the abuse JKR was suffering. She says EW ‘enthusiastically’ participates in eroding women’s rights when we all know that EW considers herself a feminist. She laughs at her pitifully ‘cushioned’ life, lack of experience etc and emphasises how her success is not her own.

What is shaming about stating the speech and the note was hurtful?

Is it shaming to say that EW had a choice before she stepped on to a public fourm and made the speech?

Is it shaming to note she was an adult making adult choices?

Its not as if she was handed a hand written quickly scribbled note to read out 10 seconds before she was pushed in front of a microphone?

□ duplicity,
□ performance,
□ hypocrisy,
□ betrayal,
□ self-interest,
□ immaturity

These ^ are the words you came up with to describe EWs reported choices.

If you come up with the list is it because you have reached some conclusions that EWs choices fit and tick the boxes or is it an accidental random pick of words?

Why is it that EW gets a pass on her choices and actions but JKR gets scolded?

worst of all, direct contribution and escalation of the abuse JKR was suffering.

Is it shaming to say that EWs choice did lead to negitive publicity and additional issues?

Is it shaming to understand the context of EWs choices?

That being a long time in the public sphere EW would understand how the media and SM works and that her speech would be news worthy drama and would lead to click bait articles and further abuse?

Should we pretend that EW was fooled into the speech?

That EW wrote the note totally ignorent of the circumstance of why she chose to put pen to paper and passed the note off to be hand delivered?

Why should EW get a free pass on the choices she made?

I wasn't a multimillionaire at fourteen. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous. I therefore understand from my own life experience what the trashing of women's rights in which Emma has so enthusiastically participated means to women and girls without her privileges.

She says EW ‘enthusiastically’ participates in eroding women’s rights when we all know that EW considers herself a feminist.

So what if EW considers herself a feminist?

EW adopted an ideology which aims to remove the meaning of the word woman. EW can aim to be a peopleist if she supports the removal of the classification of women and female.

EW by supporting an ideology which moved men into the classification and some women from the classification supported the removal of womens rights from some women.

She can ID as anything she wants but nobody has to agree with her self image.

She laughs at her pitifully ‘cushioned’ life, lack of experience etc

Why exactly are you deciding JKR is laughing at EW?

Where exactly are you pulling the idea that EW being rich and using the protection money can buy creates a pitifull life for herself?

emphasises how her success is not her own.

Where exactly are you getting this idea that JKRs words mean that EWs sucess is not her own?

@Lowarnes Has she had to strip off in a newly mixed-sex changing room at a council-run swimming pool?

I don't think this is a thing. Otherwise men would be flocking to it.

Funny thing about the crime rates😬 and some men

Police have raised "substantive concerns" about the potential of voyeurism taking place in the mixed changing rooms of a proposed swimming pool.

Hertfordshire Constabulary told a planning meeting it could not support Stevenage Borough Council's plan to replace the town's existing swimming pool with a new £44m leisure centre.

A crime prevention officer voiced concerns over plans to keep mixed changing rooms as the current facility has been the subject of voyeurism reports.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cdxqll74xnpo

A computer generated image of what the pool at the proposed new Stevenage leisure centre could look like. There are ten swimming lanes with a number of people walking beside the pool. There are seats for people to sit to the right of the pool.

Voyeurism concerns at Stevenage pool's mixed changing rooms

A police officer suggests plans to retain mixed facilities at a leisure centre be reconsidered.

I agree. It really comes across as a bitter rant. Just because Emma has not personally attacked JK. So why has she personally named Emma? Like I said it comes across as very "i put a roof over your head so show me respect" covert narcissism even. She states that Emma doesn't owe her agreement then basically writes an emotional essay on why she thinks she does actually. Bizarre.
I can't believe all the women here just acting like it's some kind of wonderful comeback simply because JK critiques the trans activism and they like that. I mean come on... this is not how that's going ti read to casual observers. She sounds unhinged. You must know deep down she does?

Crazy women right?
You will make a new friend 👍

ElmBeechOak · 30/09/2025 01:02

Why I love JKR:

• She can really write
• She is extremely brave
• She is strong
• She is generous - she gives away lots of money
• She stands up for women like me, who do NOT want to share changing rooms, toilets, refuges and hospital wards with men. As for men in women’s prisons - seriously?!

Go JKR!

ElmBeechOak · 30/09/2025 01:10

I agree with every word of that tweet. I think it only comes over as a ‘bitter rant’ to people who are very biased to start with.

Let’s face it, JK hasn’t got much to be bitter about :)
