Good evening all!
The operation went well. They cleaned out the wound and dealt with the blister and added a new VAC - a negative pressure dressing - to draw out the infection and encourage blood supply to the wound. For once I wasn't cold on coming round and my blood pressure was fine. It often plummets after surgery.
They took swabs and tissue samples and checked the fusion which was the original operation. They managed to close some of the wound but left some open as there is a big gap which the VAC is helping to keep clear. I may need surgery again next week.
I am on very strong antibiotics every six hours. I have opted for a 3 minute push rather than an hour drip, but it's quite painful so I may go back to a drip. The IV drip means I wake when they attach it and again an hour later once it has finished and they remove it - and to the sound of the alarm that it has run through. If the pain is bearable and I can sleep the push is a better option.
I was very sick afterwards as well, but it happens after anaesthesia. I'm due a CT scan tomorrow which will show if the infection has passed into the bone. The fusion has a way to go but it's on track.
I'm also not to bear weight on the foot and need the commode but it's not too bad. I will do what is necessary to heal quickly.
The walrus came with more omelettes for breakfast and he brought the earbuds I ordered on Thursday that I can sleep in so I am not disturbed by the noise. He also brought Haribo and mouthwash, and apologised for it being both spearmint and Listerine as they are both yuck but that was all they had.
He has been to the pub twice in the last week but it means he has some time for himself. He is even booking the car in to have the sensor camera fixed because I can't do it.
I was surprised to find I don't seem to have time to watch crap TV or knit, though I am keeping up with The Traitors.
Finally there was a lovely surprise when I came round in recovery. One of the nurses had a hamster keyring round her neck, similar to this one but better.
I felt that somehow the gerbils had managed to send a cousin to be with me when I came round. And it was wonderful 💙
