Last week I was interviewed under caution on suspicion of harassing an ex-Devon + Cornwall Police sergeant.
All I did was post 4 accurate, professional tweets stating he was arrested + charged with harassing a woman.
It raises big questions about free speech + public interest
I didn’t tag this former police sergeant.
I blocked him on X years ago.
I simply reported the facts.
Newquay police called it a “voluntary” interview. In reality, they said I’d be arrested if I didn’t go.
I’m tweeting all of the “evidence” against me to show how easy it is to be arrested for factual, accurate tweets right now.
Evidence #1
I’m a journalist + share police news so people find me on X + DM me stories, which I then sell.
That’s how my job works. It isn’t harassment.
Evidence #2
There is no law in England + Wales requiring people to keep arrests a secret.
Evidence #3
These two tweets date back to 2023.
The other woman has since deleted her X account, but it was a polite conversation.
The fourth piece of evidence is a social media photo of my daughter + me at a popular beach in Newquay near my sister’s house.
I hadn’t mentioned or tagged the ex-sergeant.
Apparently, this could amount to harassment, as he lives nearby + says he felt “fearful + distressed”.
This official document from Devon + Cornwall Police outlines the four pieces of evidence against me, so you don’t have to simply take my word for it.
For full context, I’ve also shared the statement I gave in my interview.
This is how easy it is to be accused of a crime in England right now.
I was just doing my job.
If that’s a crime, there’s no freedom of speech in the UK.
FYI, we had the investigation moved from Newquay to Plymouth. The officers + sergeant in Plymouth were polite + kind.
My solicitor was told that the instruction to interview me – and arrest me if I don’t attend – came from a very senior officer.
