Because of course he did.

Note to MN and monitors. Nicoresti is described as a "trans woman", therefore biologically male, therefore "he" is factually correct.

Your first sentence was mine -word for word -before I opened the thread.

I thought we'd made good progress with getting women in comedy more recognition lately, and yet again an award goes to a man. Unfortunately it seems the industry is just so captured.

soupycustard · 23/08/2025 17:44

The article goes on to say that previous winners include Eddie Izzard. As he changed his tune from 'I'm a transvestite' to jumping on the bandwagon of allegedly sometimes being in girl-mode, and using female toilets, surely the current winner isnt the first trans winner?

RNApolymerase · 23/08/2025 17:45

I don't see the problem here, it wasn't a "women's" comedy award, just "the" comedy award.

Chersfrozenface · 23/08/2025 17:45

The arts and entertainment sector are virtue signalling prats, by and large.

I really don't know when that will change. Perhaps when the economy really tanks and there's no more money for the gender addled grifters.

Set is apparently based on toilet based incident he apparently suffered. Sigh. Join the queue mate.

Totally agree.

It's a problem because I guarantee that there were comedians with more talent and better material at Edinburgh, but a trans person had to win to make a virtue-signalling point.

You will note that the only review quoted is from the Guardian, which takes an identical stance.

If that were the case, I’m sure it would have happened years ago. I think you’re being outraged for no reason.

TakeMeToAnIgloo · 23/08/2025 17:49

If if wasn't specifically a women's comedy award, then I don't have a problem with it - if indeed the show is funny and won on its own merits.

What I didn't like was the quote from the winner (on the BBC news app at least) saying that it was great to be part of an "all female" line-up of winners.

SerendipityJane · 23/08/2025 17:52

Were they funny ?

Nicoresti said: "Winning the award sure is swell, I'm super excited and stoked and jazzed. I did this for the queers making weird art, and it's a privilege to share this moment with the first all female line-up of award winners."

well it’s certainly weird to describe a lineup including a male as ‘all female’Hmm

Were they funny ?

More importantly, was he funnier than any other comedian at the festival?

Because that is what the winner should be.

Fucksake.

I actually went to see the nominees showcase being recorded the other day and it was very strange. A lot of nominees seemed to be surprised at the age of a lot of the audience, and every time material didn’t go over well, would insult the audience by implying that they were “too old” to get the joke.

SN was alright but the whole
segment they presented was just the same old “poor trans me” material - one joke was that SN is more “critical of gender” than JKR, which was a surprise as they’d just done five minutes of “ladies like make up, men like football”.

I thought John Tothill was the best, but it was pretty obvious who was going to win from the outset.

Worriedandsuspicious · 23/08/2025 18:05

Same

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 23/08/2025 18:06

Also worth pointing out that a black woman has never won the Newcomers award before, bet I take it that doesn’t bear mentioning.
Congratulations Ayoade Bamgboye!

We ask these questions in a country where Mrs Browns Boys is the high water mark of comedic culture.

Personally I am loving all the diverse voices that are being heard in comedy. And hearing a different slant on the culture I grew up can be funny and moving at the same time.

Vir Das springs to mind.

Chersfrozenface · 23/08/2025 18:11

I really don't think the likes of Mrs Brown's Boys would win a comedy award at Edinburgh.

This was mentioned on the bbc article - not the main headline of course, but it was there in the second paragraph or so, with further information later (after the description of the trans winner’s show).

the description of the newcomers award winner’ show was “She told BBC News the show was a running commentary on what it means to suffer - a particular suffering "because of the circumstances of your birth and identity".

I wonder why she didn’t just identify out of that to stop the suffering

They can’t resist the gaslighting.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/08/2025 18:26

I think they may have just had him on the end of the news roundup…
it went something like this: <male voice> <a bit stridently> “Stay out of sport!” - ‘my pleasure. I mean I thought dressing like this meant I’d never have to pretend to be interested in football again’.

i assume they tried to pick a funny bit.Confused

Velmy · 23/08/2025 19:02

Must be awful being such an unremarkable woman that you need to figure out a reason to be mad at a trans person winning a comedy award.

This is nothing to do with protecting women or our spaces being invaded. Just be honest and admit that you hate the fact that they exist.
