If you don't think she is please don’t post. Please can you tell me specifically what she has said or done that is so bad. I promise that I will listen and not argue. If you could include links that would be great. If your inclination is to assume that I’m posting in bad faith and any reasonably well informed person must be stupid or bigoted not to know, then please just let the thread die.

Did you mean to start a thread that invited people to abuse JK Rowling? I understand that it is not your intention, but will be the logical outcome ?

ThatCyanSheep · 18/08/2025 08:28

I don’t think she’s as awful as a lot of people seem to.

I just think it’s kind of sad. She has so much money, and she spends all her time on such a minuscule issue compared to what the country is facing. She could do so much good for the nation, and she won’t.

CrumpledBlouse · 18/08/2025 08:28

I know your name from around, @CurlewKate and appreciate you’re posting in good faith, but am inclined to agree with @Helleofabore about the likely outcome.

But she does loads of stuff. What does she say that you think is sad?

I don’t think that’s what the OP intends.

JK gets such abuse but nobody can ever come up with “evidence” of her transgressions.

OP are you looking for those who don’t like her to provide the evidence for why they formed those opinions? If so you’ll be left waiting!

I’m hoping, genuinely, to understand. Because, genuinely, I don’t.

I will bite. I dont like her because she comes across as she thinks her opinions are worth more because she is rich and a successful author. Compare her tosomebody like Val Mcdermid who comes over as a really down to earth and nice person. . That hasn't got an inflated ego because of success.

She could be addressing things like child poverty, she could be helping people like Marcus rashford did. I just find it all quite sad that the elite in this country focus on the divisive rhetoric rather than actually trying to improve things.

But do you understand that you have started a thread inviting only views from those who are likely inclined to abuse her? Ie. no balancing posts because you stated you don’t want to those who don’t believe she is ‘awful’ to post.

As I said it is probably not your intention, but that is what you are inviting with your OP.

Okay. You don’t need to be, because I hold my beliefs and you hold yours. For what it’s worth, I don’t know where I sit on the entire trans thing but I think I lean more towards the views held on this board. I just find it sad when anyone with great wealth becomes like this.

I really suggest you read more deeply about her charities and what other charities she contributes financially to.

Wow.

A quick Google would have saved you embarrassing yourself like this.

Becomes like what?
Passionate about truth and justice and safety for women? Not really embarrassing as far as I can see, but an explanation of what's embarrassing about it would be enlightening, so please provide one.

I never said she was embarrassing. Other people have labelled me as that.

I saw a really good post on here a few weeks ago about how there are much, much more pressing issues facing us. Our NHS being stripped, children living in poverty, the cost of living crisis. Things like trans people, the “boat people” etc are used by politicians as a diversion tactic to hide that they’re not doing anything to address the actual issues.

You seem very uninformed about all the good work she's been doing for decades.

This is a charity she set up in 2004 to help children.

We have been working to end the systematic institutionalisation of children since 2005.

JKR is a truly great philanthropist. Lumos is just one of her amazing charities supporting children, @ThatCyanSheep .

Pays all her taxes in full in this country?
Puts millions into charities for children, abused and raped women, people with MS?

What an absolute cow.

Agree.

Also, you cant limit who posts on a thread. If you want a private chat, dont do it on a mn forum.

Ask for DMs or something.

Isn't she the only person to lose her place on the "rich list" because of the amount of money she gave to charities?

How much do you need her to do for child poverty?
She set up a charity to combat it.
Although maybe her support of victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence cancel it out.

"Based on her earnings and diverse revenue streams, Rowling’s net worth could be considerably higher, were it not for her commitment to philanthropy. Forbes estimates she has donated more than $250 million in the past 20 years, primarily to three causes: Lumos, which has helped more than 280,000 abandoned children in orphanages in Romania, Haiti, Colombia and Ukraine; Volant, which supports victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence as well as at-risk children in Scotland; and the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic, which treats patients with neurological conditions such as MS, the disease that took her mother’s life when Rowling was just 25."

Helping people like Rashford did?

She donated £15.3m to establish a clinic at the university of Edinburgh to look into neurological conditions like MS. It’s named after her mother.

All global royalties for The Cuckoo’s Calling were donated to The Army Benevolent Fund.

She set up the charity Lumos, giving about £60m.

So I think you can disagree with her views on some things. But she has given a lot to charity. Forbes estimated about £200m in donations across various charities.

Lol, even when it's demonstrated how wrong you were you have to swivel to something else to slate her about.

Something else that's factually wrong btw 🤡
