If you don't think she is please don’t post. Please can you tell me specifically what she has said or done that is so bad. I promise that I will listen and not argue. If you could include links that would be great. If your inclination is to assume that I’m posting in bad faith and any reasonably well informed person must be stupid or bigoted not to know, then please just let the thread die.

I never said she was embarrassing. Other people have labelled me as that.

I saw a really good post on here a few weeks ago about how there are much, much more pressing issues facing us. Our NHS being stripped, children living in poverty, the cost of living crisis. Things like trans people, the “boat people” etc are used by politicians as a diversion tactic to hide that they’re not doing anything to address the actual issues.

Wearelumos.org

How many billionaires do you know of that setup and fund charities such as this? So many children in poverty, JK helps and you still think it is not enough

Helleofabore · 18/08/2025 08:36

But do you understand that you have started a thread inviting only views from those who are likely inclined to abuse her? Ie. no balancing posts because you stated you don’t want to those who don’t believe she is ‘awful’ to post.

As I said it is probably not your intention, but that is what you are inviting with your OP.

The reason I asked that question is that I am fully aware of all the philanthropy, and I know what is said about her. What I want is some actual quotations, of her actual words which will explain the dislike people have for her. So far nobody has quoted anything. Obviously I can’t stop anyone posting anything they want to! So far, I think the only quotation is her saying “Merry Terfmas” which is a bit juvenile, but surely not enough to provoke death threats?

Fighting for the rights of half of all the people on the planet tends to make people a bit obsessive, as does wanting to protect children from a nonsensical, harmful ideology.

I don’t know if you know much about the history of women’s rights, but they are always under threat, and some of us would rather fight to hold onto them, than blithely hand them over to men pretending to be women.

Doing it in an offputting communicative style is counter-productive.

Mischance · 18/08/2025 09:32

Viviennemary · 18/08/2025 08:32

I will bite. I dont like her because she comes across as she thinks her opinions are worth more because she is rich and a successful author. Compare her tosomebody like Val Mcdermid who comes over as a really down to earth and nice person. . That hasn't got an inflated ego because of success.

The issue is OP trying to understand the content of her views, not the state of her ego.

toastedbreadcrumbs · 18/08/2025 09:33

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 18/08/2025 09:25

She doesn’t owe him anything, she gets to choose who she interacts with whether she agrees with them or not.

He gave up everything he had to protect women, a little goodwill from JKR is only fair.

I think that her getting a bit salty or triumphalist does play into TRAs' hands. But, fuck it, I enjoy it. Let others be Patient Griselda.

See, this is the thing though. I look at it with the view that she, like everyone, should not have to accept abuse. I think that the same standards of behaviour should be applied to her as to anyone who is only a private citizen.

I don’t consider that her being an author should obligate her to act as if she is a vessel for absorbing abuse.

crumpet · 18/08/2025 09:34

Viviennemary · 18/08/2025 08:50

Exactly. Just because somebody doesn't agree with you there is no need to act superior. J K Rowling is very divisive. She has managed to fall out with the main actors the Harry Potter films. I've got got friends whose views I don't agree with and they don't agree with mine.

How did she fall out with them? What happened?

Zapx · 18/08/2025 09:34

TheLudditesWereRight · 18/08/2025 09:05

I admire her charity work but dislike her social media presence because I think people with huge reach and influence who engage in petty smackdowns of people they disagree with is not a good look. Does she ever post about anything else?

She often posts about women in Iran and Afghanistan, and she personally helped some women escape Afghanistan when the Taliban took over again.

sanluca · 18/08/2025 09:35

Helleofabore · 18/08/2025 09:24

Ahhh. So yes. She should just turn the other cheek so to speak.

She should allow male people who constantly abuse her on social media to continue to do that, because that is the bar of standard of behaviour you feel she, personally, she aspire to. Just ignore the abuse, and it will go away? Right?

Except she did ignore the abuse, it didn’t go away.

Or is it that she should just ignore the abuse regardless because she should just absorb all of it? Is this the expectation for all abused people then? Or just her?

She ignored the abuse so they started posting porn on threads on x that were meant for children to show their drawings (parents uploading them of course as children can't have x accounts)

Espressosummer · 18/08/2025 09:35

ThatCyanSheep · 18/08/2025 08:39

Okay. You don’t need to be, because I hold my beliefs and you hold yours. For what it’s worth, I don’t know where I sit on the entire trans thing but I think I lean more towards the views held on this board. I just find it sad when anyone with great wealth becomes like this.

She helped to stop our justice system putting rapists in women's prisons. The fact you consider that a miniscule issue says a lot more about you than it does about JK Rowling

I remember.

Men sent dick pics directly to her ickabog threads.

But apparently, she should do nothing about it.

She earned the wealth through her talent. What are you doing towards child poverty?

You may not like her communication style (most people do), but you can hardly think it's counter productive?
She has done a terrific job of raising awareness to these issues.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 18/08/2025 09:39

Ah we’ve had the ‘but there are other problems!’ line already. Women just can’t care about more than one issue at the same time eh! Fuck setting up charities and rape crisis centres and flying women out of Afghanistan when folk aren’t getting their bins picked up. Care about more important things 🙄.

Off putting to whom? Men pretending to be women? You might want to take a look at the amount of people who agree with her, versus the amount of people who agree with those prominent male activists who mistakenly believe they can get the better of her, the ratios are simply astonishing.

Those people who feel they cannot be honest about this subject in public take heart from her stance on this issue, they are grateful that someone of her intelligence and integrity can use her voice for them. Her detractors simply don’t like her fact based, well researched, reasoning on this subject, but mostly they don’t like the fact that she’s a woman, she’s rich, she’s self made and is so much cleverer than them.

SueSuddio · 18/08/2025 09:40

She's basically stopping the UK at least from buckling to gender fictions through her inconvenient truth bombs and women should be grateful to her. I am. I absolutely don't want to detract from all the incredible women who are fighting this, but her reach is pretty powerful.

We're lucky she gets so involved.

viques · 18/08/2025 09:40

ThatCyanSheep · 18/08/2025 08:28

I don’t think she’s as awful as a lot of people seem to.

I just think it’s kind of sad. She has so much money, and she spends all her time on such a minuscule issue compared to what the country is facing. She could do so much good for the nation, and she won’t.

I think standing up for 50% of the population is a pretty good way to spend your time and money. Especially when as thanks for her efforts she is threatened with rape, burning and hanging.

( she supports a lot of children's charities and health care charities too, but that is often ignored)

Then some of these same abusive men tried to claim that she “ignored child abuse” because of their own dick pics on a thread read by children! Breathtaking DARVO.

DialSquare · 18/08/2025 09:40

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/08/2025 09:28

I have the exact same attitude. I think laughing at the excesses of the TRA movement is the best way to undermine it.

i agree. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the best way to deal with the detractors, is to take the piss out of them. And she does it so well.

I see where you going with this post OP. As you can see though, there is so much misinformation posted about JKR that posters who support her will rightly feel the need to respond to it.
I think the fact that no one has managed the collect that million pounds on offer if they can prove her transphobia, tells the full story. Not saying that people can’t dislike her though but I’ve yet to see an actual reason for it.

I wonder how many of these people address all these important issues with their elected representatives? Of which JKR is not one. But I suppose it’s just easier to blame everything on a woman who stands up for herself and other women isn’t it?

CurlewKate · 18/08/2025 09:42

@Viviennemary- do you have a quote from her you’d be prepared to share on here? Fine if you don’t of course!

I think her constant posting on SM now comes across as a deep hatred of ALL trans people. There is no longer any light or shade. Lots
of her posts (and posts on here) feel
unnecessarily personal and mocking to me - for example attacking appearance. I think because of this she has become a bit of a caricature now.

I admire JKR but I do agree with this post

LochKatrine · 18/08/2025 09:43

@ThatCyanSheep "miniscule" are you for real!
She is an extraordinary woman, a philanthropist who has genuinely made a difference, but more- she's a woman who speaks up and won't be shut up. I like that. 👍

I largely agree with this. I think she’s smart, brave and I’m incredibly grateful for how she has used her voice to fight for women’s rights. But am becoming uncomfortable with some of her more recent tweets / blogs eg the review of Sturgeon’s book which was personal and vicious.

Usually she uses her articulateness for well reasoned arguments that show good sense, but I feel it’s lately being used as a weapon to mock individuals or indeed whole groups, rather than problematic ideas of some within that group.
