If you don't think she is please don’t post. Please can you tell me specifically what she has said or done that is so bad. I promise that I will listen and not argue. If you could include links that would be great. If your inclination is to assume that I’m posting in bad faith and any reasonably well informed person must be stupid or bigoted not to know, then please just let the thread die.

I think @theilltemperedmaggotintheheartofthelaw is quoting some TRA piece.

Yes, that was everything I could find, and it boils down to her being a non-believer who has the freedom to do something about it. It's the lack of belief that is transphobic.

I admire her charity work but dislike her social media presence because I think people with huge reach and influence who engage in petty smackdowns of people they disagree with is not a good look. Does she ever post about anything else?

So, she should just ignore the people who target her with abuse and only take the high road in your opinion?

Should all women just respond to abuse in this way? Or just her?

I think her constant posting on SM now comes across as a deep hatred of ALL trans people. There is no longer any light or shade. Lots
of her posts (and posts on here) feel
unnecessarily personal and mocking to me - for example attacking appearance. I think because of this she has become a bit of a caricature now.

I agree. I'm not in favour of trans people taking part in sport in women teams. I'm totally against it, But her anti trans stand borders on hatred which isnt acceptable.

I think I must be reading your posts incorrectly, is this for or against?!

She could be addressing things like child poverty, she could be helping people like Marcus rashford did. I just find it all quite sad that the elite in this country focus on the divisive rhetoric rather than actually trying to improve things.

Is that a joke? She set up and massively funds the Lumos charity which helps children around the world. She set up and funds Beira’s place for rape victims. She set up a fund for women attacked by activists. She still lives in Scotland which means she actually pays taxes (and at a higher level than in England). She used to donate to the Labour Party until they effectively drove her away.

To the person who mentioned Val McDermid, much as I like her books and admire her intellect I’ve never heard of her charity donations. This could mean that they’re secret but suspect there really aren’t many.

I think that her getting a bit salty or triumphalist does play into TRAs' hands. But, fuck it, I enjoy it. Let others be Patient Griselda.

She has managed to fall out with the main actors the Harry Potter films

LOL

She could just block them. She has huge power on social media and I don't think she uses it well. She increasingly comes across as an obsessive crank. That's my opinion, feel free to disagree.

Gofaster2023 · 18/08/2025 09:18

I don't think she is awful at all. I think she is clever, witty and can be very subtle. I love her books, she has used her money to rescue an area of natural beauty and environmental importance near me. I just dont have to agree with every thing she does. She probably wouldn't like me putting milk in with the tea bag before adding the water. You dont have to hate someone to dislike something that they do.

Could you post some of the links to her ‘anti-trans’ posts please.

The OP did want to see the evidence rather than just general accusations.

Women are just expected to absorb it all didn’t you know? It’s not very feminine or nice or kind to defend ourselves against male aggression, especially when we could just be at home, behind the kitchen sink, preferably barefoot and pregnant.

DrBlackbird · 18/08/2025 09:19

This thread seemed to be started in good faith and the op merely asked for reasons why people don’t like her. It’s disappointing that some responses are mocking posters who don’t know of JKRs philanthropy. Yes, some posters will hate JKR because she supports women’s rights but others had reasons that can be refuted with measured facts.

She’s not your Mum, Graham.

I'm not Graham, but you know that.

I take it that you don't agree she's deliberately ignoring him for some unknown reason?

It's starting to come across as cruel and intentional at this stage.

Viviennemary · 18/08/2025 08:32

I will bite. I dont like her because she comes across as she thinks her opinions are worth more because she is rich and a successful author. Compare her tosomebody like Val Mcdermid who comes over as a really down to earth and nice person. . That hasn't got an inflated ego because of success.

You couldn't be more wrong about Val McDermid. I have rarely met a more arrogant person convinced of her own Rightness In All Things.

Fighting for the rights of half of all the people on the planet tends to make people a bit obsessive, as does wanting to protect children from a nonsensical, harmful ideology.

I don’t know if you know much about the history of women’s rights, but they are always under threat, and some of us would rather fight to hold onto them, than blithely hand them over to men pretending to be women.

Ahhh. So yes. She should just turn the other cheek so to speak.

She should allow male people who constantly abuse her on social media to continue to do that, because that is the bar of standard of behaviour you feel she, personally, she aspire to. Just ignore the abuse, and it will go away? Right?

Except she did ignore the abuse, it didn’t go away.

Or is it that she should just ignore the abuse regardless because she should just absorb all of it? Is this the expectation for all abused people then? Or just her?

She doesn’t owe him anything, she gets to choose who she interacts with whether she agrees with them or not.

I have the exact same attitude. I think laughing at the excesses of the TRA movement is the best way to undermine it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/08/2025 09:29

I still have time for Glinner, but I wish he’d just give it a rest re JKR and other women.

Miriabelle · 18/08/2025 09:30

She has so much money, and she spends all her time on such a minuscule issue compared to what the country is facing. She could do so much good for the nation, and she won’t.

@ThatCyanSheep Do you mean good like funding a huge charity for orphaned children and tackling child poverty, giving away huge amounts of money to other charities, funding neurological research into degenerative brain conditions plus an entire neurology clinic, funding women’s domestic violence shelters, paying large amounts of money to fly out Afghan women and girls escaping the Taliban? That kind of good?

I can only think that you are just a bit ignorant about this, but it would be good if you could actually find out about it before making statements like the above.

The posters who complained she doesn’t do enough to help the country, seem to forget she isn’t a politician so it isn’t her job, but she does give away a massive amount to causes that are important to her. It isn’t mocking to point something out to people who are labouring under a misapprehension.
