NHS Fife tries to silence nurse - Sandie Peggie vs NHS Fife Health Board and Dr Beth Upton - thread #49

1000 replies

nauticant · 31/07/2025 13:22

Sandie Peggie, a nurse at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy (VH), has brought claims in the employment tribunal against her employer; Fife Health Board (the Board) and another employee, Dr B Upton. Ms Peggie’s claims are of sexual harassment, harassment related to a protected belief, indirect discrimination and victimisation. Dr Upton claims to be a transwoman, that is observed as male at birth but asserting a female gender identity.

The Employment Tribunal hearing started on Monday 3 February 2025 and was expected to last 2 weeks. However, after 2 weeks it was not complete and it adjourned part-heard. It resumed on 16 July and the last day of evidence was 29 July 2025. It will resume again over 1 to 2 September for closing submissions.

The hearing commenced with Sandie Peggie giving evidence. Dr Beth Upton gave evidence from Thursday 6 February to Wednesday 12 February 2025. Sandie Peggie returned to give more evidence on 29 July 2025.

Access to view the second part of the hearing remotely was obtainable by sending an email request to [email protected] by 5pm on Wednesday 9 July. Detailed instructions were provided here:

Thank you for this. I was particularly struck by this paragraph:

Hanvey said that moment he met Peggie and her mother was forever etched in his mind. “They appeared in my office as frightened rabbits and the world seemed against them,” he said. “It was abundantly clear to me that Sandie had done nothing wrong and I resolved to do everything I could to help.

That stood out to me too. I'm so glad she was able to get support from the MP and in turn from her backer, especially since her union was also useless

moto748e · 02/08/2025 22:50

On one of the earlier threads, there was mention of Joanna Cherry, and I was tempted to post, that she and that Hanvey fella seemed only the only decent people in Scottish politics now, but then I Googled, and saw that both were out of office now. Says something, I suppose, and seemed to mirror those sensible people who are no longer in the HoC. Thinking of people like Rory Stewart (I know, I know!) and Dominic Grieve. They are Tories, and I don't support them, but the likes of them have mostly been replaced by idiots, and I'm sure you could say the same on the Labour side.

moto748e · 02/08/2025 23:09

A bit like that Tory MP who stood up for the PO people. I always thought he was a tedious old windbag, and maybe he was, but he did his job there as a good constituency MP, and supported the people who asked for his help, and wouldn't let go. Like so much lately, it seems to come down to, people should just be doing their jobs. Thankfully, some still are.

I've never measured the gaps above and below the doors in typical US toilets that you might find in the mall, but I'm 5'7" and I wouldn't be able to see over the top even if I stood on tiptoe. Of course there are plenty of women taller than me, but it's never struck me as a problem in all the years I've used them.

I’m just over 6ft and I can easily see into adjacent cubicles when I use this style of loo.

Now, not many women are this tall, and even fewer would have a mind to peak into the next cubicle. But plenty of men are this height or taller, and plenty of men would enjoy having a stare, with plausible deniability- it’s not my fault I can see in. I’m just tall.

Actually I really like Rory Stewart. For a Tory (or even for anyone), he's a very decent person, and a good writer. He should have gone further in the Conservative Party but I think he just had too many morals and was too intelligent.

He has been unfortunately blinkered about the whole gender issue though.

Sorry dont have time for these really long threads, but in case this hasn't been posted and if a duplicate not really sorry as it is a good story (IMO):

NHS Fife bosses forced to handle hundreds of cards supporting trans row nurse Sandie Peggie
The mail has been sent to the hospital she was suspended from

He has been unfortunately blinkered about the whole gender issue though.

His attitude to women’s rights is the epitome of what Rob Henderson calls “luxury beliefs.”

The episode of TRIP in response to the SC judgement was so clumsy and ignorant I lost a lot of respect for him.

He's a collosal coward

I've also lost so much respect for him. He knows full well the impact on women. But he won't take a stand against his mates.

Weasle.

Yes, he has made lazy, arrogant presumptions based on ignorance and no research whatsoever. It was shocking given his intelligence and education. I don’t think he had read anything at all except headlines.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2025 08:09

And his stupid comments on the Taliban.

That episode was a shocker. It has seriously dented my respect for him and for TRIP.

To be fair, the big offender was Alastair Campbell, whose attitude was "My partner and daughter say that GC women are just a bunch of horrible old bigots, and that's all I need to know."

Rory Stewart at least went through the motions of putting forward the GC view. His hands are tied by the fact that he's a professor at Yale, and he doesn't want to damage his reputation or income. I was feeling generous towards him. But then he said he has a friend who prescribes puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones. ☹️ He really needs to stop relying on AI to do his homework for him.

CarefullyCuratedFurniture · 03/08/2025 08:42

I actually didn't know this about RS and I am a bit gutted!

SqueakyDinosaur · 03/08/2025 09:11

Same with Adam Rutherford. He's a scientist FFS AND he's president of the Humanist Society, whose entire philosophy is supposedly based on evidence and rational thought, and he is massively equivocal. Whether it's ignorance or cowardice, it's extremely unedifying.

Why, thank you 😊

It makes me wonder what else they don't understand. Should I be listening to their explanation of events in Afghanistan, or is that blather too?

SionnachRuadh · 03/08/2025 10:04

I don't know Rory Stewart, but we have some mutuals, and I must confess one of the biggest laughs I had this year was Rory complaining bitterly about the Trump administration defunding Mrs Rory's project explaining conceptual art to peasants in Afghanistan.

Sometimes I wonder if Rory is real or if a satirist invented him, like this "Zack Polanski" character Sacha Baron Cohen has been playing.

TheKeatingFive · 03/08/2025 10:13

Well Stewart's take on the US election was miles off, I'd conclude they aren't the insightful commentators they like to think they are.

They're just men who've been give a platform to regurgitate the views of their own echo chamber. There's nothing genuinely intelligent about what they're doing at all

I completely agree and I'm fans of their shows! Rory didn't understand the US election at all because he doesn't have an ear for grassroots opinions. Alastair used to be quite insightful about UK politics but again, he appears to have lost the ability to hear what people outside his own circle are saying. I don't rate either of them now for political analysis but I do enjoy their interviews with other people eg with leaders.

NotfinanciallyresponsibleforyouSadTimes · 03/08/2025 10:21

A source told Scotland on Sunday the total bill could amount to £700,000 - and likely even more, as that sum would exclude any remedy made in Ms Peggie’s favour should the health board lose its case. NHS Fife has confirmed it had already spent £258,000 on legal costs for the tribunal as of the end of June.

Bloody hell! That’s taxpayers money that NHS Fife has wasted! Some of that should be docked from a few salaries

I can imagine RS as depicted by Anthony Powell, turning up in various situations to illustrate a point or provide mildly comic relief.

Same with former Humanist president Alice Roberts.

She knows perfectly well what a female skeleton is, but seems to lose all reason when it comes to the live, flesh-covered ones.

The moral cowards have really revealed their hands, haven't they?

I won't be forgetting that.
