NHS Fife tries to silence nurse - Sandie Peggie vs NHS Fife Health Board and Dr Beth Upton - thread #34

nauticant · 21/07/2025 09:18

Sandie Peggie, a nurse at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy (VH), has brought claims in the employment tribunal against her employer; Fife Health Board (the Board) and another employee, Dr B Upton. Ms Peggie’s claims are of sexual harassment, harassment related to a protected belief, indirect discrimination and victimisation. Dr Upton claims to be a transwoman, that is observed as male at birth but asserting a female gender identity.

The Employment Tribunal hearing started on Monday 3 February 2025 and was expected to last 2 weeks. However, after 2 weeks it was not complete and it adjourned part-heard. It resumed on 16 July and the last day of evidence will be 28 July and then there will be 2 days of submissions from counsel meaning that the hearing will end on 30 July.

The hearing commenced with Sandie Peggie giving evidence. Dr Beth Upton gave evidence from Thursday 6 February to Wednesday 12 February.

Access to view the hearing remotely was obtainable by sending an email request to [email protected] by 5pm on Wednesday 9 July. Detailed instructions were provided here:

In recipes I always used shallots instead of scallions. So I now know better.

borntobequiet · 21/07/2025 11:04

72 tomorrow and really resenting having to put up with such nonsense, at my age. I thought things would get better for women, I was wrong.

I say snib and hate celery, all those little fibres that you can’t get rid of and stick in your teeth however finely you chop and blend it.

I am always baffled by the confusion over outwith. It seems like the most obvious way to say it!

Mind you, I completely confused an English friend when I said a picture was squint. He obviously thought I'd lost it. He's going 'squint? Like eyes?' and I (just as confused) was going 'no? It's squint!'

We worked it out eventually.

We say squint in the NE. My partner, who's from Suffolk, would call in 'on the huh' eg 'That picture's on the huh'. I love all these regional variations!

Right, I'm going to put the kettle on again. It's bound to start while I'm out of the room.

OverlyFragrant · 21/07/2025 11:04

Can I suggest that any talk of celery/soup/recipes/origin of words and anything completely unrelated to this case is on a different thread.
It's utterly ridiculous having to read through pages and pages of celery talk on a thread as important as this.

Shallots and spring onions/scallions are not the same thing. I think that is what you’re saying though…

Someone on X

I’ve just had an email saying:
Good morning,

Thank you for your email.
The hearing hasn’t started yet – the parties are having private discussions. Once they have concluded, we will then turn on the cameras and microphones in the court room.

Sibwns was the word for spring onions where I grew up in South Wales. (Pronounced shibbwns)
Especially by the old boys who grew them on their allotments.
I'd forgotten all about it, just had a vivid flashback to my mam's kitchen.

I just went looking for the Welsh for spring onions - as I call them "jibbons"! It definitely looks like the same root for the Scots version of Sibwns / Syboes!

Strongly recommend no-one puts their real age unless you name change often. Never put too much identifying stuff on the internet.

MagicSexEssence · 21/07/2025 11:05

DD is going to wake up any minute and nothing has happened. I hoped I'd at least be able to hear about the statement debacle.

Desperatelyseekingreason · 21/07/2025 11:05

Had to skip thread 33 so as to not miss this morning live.

Immensely grateful to those relaying events as they unfold and the wise comments.

Would be sweet if they had but i get the feeling they are far too smug to admit defeat!!

I think you're right. But the statement on Friday was interesting, especially in the wake of the SC judgement. If they're choosing to issue a self-defence at this late stage you have to think they might sense which way the wind is blowing.

southbiscay · 21/07/2025 11:06

I’m 63 but in a Dr Uptonogood kind of way, I identify as 36.

36 was fucking amazing.

<waves at all the mid/west US terfery who are propping their eyes open with matchsticks waiting for this all to recommence>

hholiday · 21/07/2025 11:08

This is from The Herald livestream: 03am
The legal teams for Sandie Peggie and for NHS Fife and Dr Beth Upton are in the hearing room.
We're waiting for Employment Judge Alexander Kemp, and then we should, hopefully be underway.

You might learn something while we are waiting.

51 here. Also enjoying the linguistic diversity. I'm with the out-with, skew-whiff, snib users, originally a Scouser - hadn't appreciated their Scottish origins.

Totally agree. It's tedious to have to wade through so many posts like this.
