Mumsnet Obsession With Penises

My controversial opinion is that most of the Mums who obsess here over penises, uteruses and chromosomes, would pick more important and interesting topics if their own child was trans.

Did you get any sense of the genesis of her opinions? Trans friends? Or just wanting to #bekind?

The Be Kind thing was strong. But also that we have a mutual 'transwoman' friend, who is lovely.

The ironic thing is that the 'transwoman' friend has never described himself to me (or her) as such. He just likes wearing 'women's' clothes. He describes himself as 'he'.

He also thinks that anyone's self assessment of themselves is likely to be bollocks, because people believe all sorts of crap about themselves that is objectively nonsense.

So... My best friend who thinks she is a feminist has looked me straight in the eye and told me (quite condescendingly, actually) that people can change biological sex in support of a man who believes no such thing.

And I now find it difficult to take anything she says seriously.

It is so so sad.

Clearly this is a forum for mothers who've never loved and cared for a trans person.

I suppose technically mine is trans. Thankfully no one is suggesting any medication or surgery to attempt turn them into a t-rex though.

I remain eternally grateful no adult actually thought 4 year old me was serious when I said I was a boiled beetle on a blistering hot day in the summer of 1976. Thankfully nearly 50 years later they still don't actually believe I believe I'm a boiled beetle

I have posted in Site Stuff suggesting that MNHQ add an Announcement when they shunt threads from other Boards in to FWR.

OP should be ashamed that their standard of debate was so poor that PPs judged them to be an 11 year old.

If the OP really is a middle-aged Canadian, as per the only previous post that I could find, then given the parlous state of mainstream journalism and media in Canada perhaps they can be excused their level of indoctrination and ignorance? 🤷‍♀️

Ignorance of anything is never a fully acceptable excuse in a liberal society.

People are capable of going out and educating themselves and understanding principles of rights and wrongs. We live in an international world now. Canada can't say it believes in free speech principles and also prevent discussion of this subject. If Canada wishes to go down this route, it would quickly have to adopt draconian policies that are more at home in China, North Korea and Russia.

"I was just following orders" is not an adequate defence in international criminal courts which Canada recognise and respects.

This is precisely we can right say that this is scary levels authoritarian bullshit that should be resisted by the UK in order to stop us turning into cultlike muppets who blindly follow what we are told in an unthinking way.

Canada, can get in the bin with its homophobic, sexist regressive bullshit. Sex is real. This is the UK and this is a UK forum subject to UK laws. If Canadians don't want to read i t, they don't have to come here. If Canadians have a problem with MN they can start putting up the Great Firewall of Canada at their own expense and admit they have become an Authoritarian State. Given Canada's own identity as a liberal country and issues with its big neighbour this would be quite the thing to do... I can see attempts to do so lasting all of about five seconds and thats WITHOUT consideration of who the current US President is.

The idea that Canadians can be THIS indoctrined, without it being an active choice at some level, is absolute nonsense. ESPECIALLY, when you've actively managed to find, log in, post on MN to do some scolding of the Nasty Evil Women and read the replies of the women (and men) here.

No, posters who do that, do so because they don't value debate. They do so because they value themselves and their own identity above the subject matter. They don't WANT to engage. They get off, on trying to 'punish' or 'show up' posters here. Thats why they are Bad Faith posters. They don't want to deal with the difficult questions.

TransMother · 30/06/2025 16:32

I'm an MN mother with a trans identifying child🙋

@Manfreglory Clearly this is a forum for mothers who've never loved and cared for a trans person

My child and I are quite clear that sex cannot be changed.

As a matter of fact, I do love my child, I do support her even though I disagree with her choices and decisions on this matter. And I'm not the only parent in this situation in this site. So no, take your prejudiced assumptions elsewhere.

And you talk about "we" when you refer to transgender people - why if you yourself are not transgender??

Boiledbeetle · 30/06/2025 16:57

ArabellaScott · 30/06/2025 12:47

You talk so fondly about your husbands' penises yet if a trans woman has one, it's the enemy.

This is a version of the 'you've all got gender neutral loos in your house'.

Its the same fallacy. And it's exactly the same argument that used to be used against rape victims.

A woman who has consenting sex with a man does not therefore sign away the need for her consent to interactions with other men/penises.

Women are allowed to choose which penises they are exposed to or interact with, and to suggest otherwise is gross rape culture.

I could probably talk about some women's husbands penises quite fondly, not too sure their wives would be happy about it though! But as for my own husband... I'd have to get married first!

RedToothBrush · 30/06/2025 17:01

I think the penny dropped for me with my brother very early on the subject.

He didn't want to tell me, he was trans because he thought my fiancee was going to be transphobic. He didn't give my fiancee even the opportunity to defend himself. He was 'prejudged'. As in my brother had prejudice against my husband about what he would do, say or think.

Its was a really good exercise in watching behaviour over identity.

As it goes, my husband really didn't give a shit. He's always been less hardline than me over the years, and has gone on many occasions "you can't be right about how far these activists are going, you are exagerrating" to me. Over time he HAS come to realise that my brother and his then partner really weren't outliers - and sadly representative of the militant level extremist TransActivism has attracted who really do need to be told "No, this is unacceptable behaviour. This has nothing to do with your identity or the way you present."

The prejudices of Militant TransActivists need to be highlighted. The levels of homophobia are not a coincidence. They are very much a feature not a bug.

Women here, do not care about identity and appearance of others. They DO care about being told they and their children don't have rights to privacy, dignity and safeguarding. Framing this as bigotted, phobic or otherwise unacceptable is emotional abuse and lacking in due diligence as we can demonstrate the legitimacy of our concerns in multiple respectable and recognised best practices.

Boiledbeetle · 30/06/2025 17:05

To those shocked by me claiming human form

🪲 I was trying to be funny, but I realize now that creature based deception is unbecoming of a beetle.

🪲 I panicked. I thought maybe if I wasn't a beetle, you'd take me more seriously. Ironically, I now see that I should have been embracing my beetle-ness all along.

🪲 I’ve consulted the Council of Crickets and the Guild of Grasshoppers—I’m officially undergoing humility training. Day one: leaf sweeping.

🪲 I brought snacks to make it up to you. Mostly aphids and a single, slightly crushed blueberry.

Not sure if I am Pepsi or Eva.

Possibly it changes day to day based on feelz and perhaps if i am arrested as one and can identify out of it.

What about those days when you're feeling a bit flat? Then do you identify as Lilt?

PepsiForEva · 30/06/2025 20:46

TBH I always wanted to be a chic European.

Maybe San Pelligrino. Original Lemonata obviously.

Wetoldyousaurus · 30/06/2025 21:33

I am the mother of a child who insisted she was a boy when she was 3 and told me so. She would only wear what she had already learned somehow were ‘boys’ clothes which basically meant her brother’s clothes - whom she adored. I let her, but I was consistent in reminding her that clothes and toys didn’t make her a boy, so she would always be a girl but she could wear whatever she wanted and play with whoever and whatever toys she chose. She is a very happy teenager now, totally comfortable in her female body with no problems around identity. She still loves messy play and this interest is now being put to good use in the chemistry lab at school.

Had we, as her parents, been ‘obsessed with genitals’ as the OP accuses, we would have, on account of her personality and clothing preferences, thrown her life into disarray by forcing her community to lie to her about her sex, endangered her by encouraging her to use opposite sex facilities in times of vulnerability, permanently disabled her by feeding her hormones and encouraging her to undergo mutilating surgeries. THAT’S what obsession with genitals leads to. That is not the GC women on this board. It’s the exact opposite. To put it in child's debating language, ‘no I’m not, you are’.

ArabellaScott · 30/06/2025 15:05

Not in the curry. You have sliced banana rolled in desiccated coconut as a side dish. It's nice!

Ah see, we had sliced banana (or even orange) to the side of the curry, and the desiccated coconut sprinkled over the whole thing.

In my defence, it was the 80s and this recipe originated Oop North. Even into the 00s my northern grandmother was suspicious of basil in tomato soup. I suspect if she'd met a bulb of garlic or some cardamom pods she'd have beaten them to death with a broom.

KnottyAuty · 30/06/2025 22:45

No curry recipe but our local turkish shop stocks lamb's testicles - here's a tagine recipe if you fancy:

I tried some at a BBQ and didn't take to the texture. Brilliant talking point tho - the crowd was divided 50/50 on who was even prepared to try. And 100% of males winced

I was just going to post about them! 😂

When I was a kid we used to have Lamb's Fries (testicles) and Lamb's Sweetbreads (pancreas) fried in breadcrumbs. Ages since I've had any. Very nice!

Maybe we just need someone by the ladies lavs offering tasters of BBQ bollocks? The toilet police of James O’Brien’s imagination could then divert anyone who winces?

Mumsnet is not mandatory.
